Essien 100%, and he wasn't even playing in his position at all! Kudos to Hilario...he is one of the rare players who actually earns his salary properly..when playing! 317.gif

Drogba? WTF!!! Either AG plays him from now on in 4-4-2 with Nic or he doesn't play him at all!! I was disgusted and ashamed with his theatrics again tonight!!

I can understand Hilario getting a few pats on the back for his two saves in the second half however he also put us under pressure on a number of occasions tonight by not being able to kick a moving ball. hard to criticise him too much though as he has played so little football for a long time now.

Essien for me. He just didn't stop and more or less single handedly made the second goal.

Not too many other good performances out there on what was a very edgy and nail biting night.

On Essien I have to say I was bloody annoyed when he picked up that stupid booking which is going to keep him out of the first leg against Liverpool. Every kid in every boys club in the country knows they are going to get booked for doing that and yet he, knowing he is already on a yellow, can't discipline himself to keep his cool.

My vote goes to Hilario - he spends so much time on the bench, it can't be easy coming on to another pressure situation. Being generous, you could put those couple of wayward clearances down to nervousness and lack of match practice. Apart from that, he was fine.

I was torn between Ballack and Essien, but Essien's work for the Lamps goal just clinched it for me.

Frank had a mare. I only counted half a dozen good passes! In fact I think there was only those half dozen that went to a blue shirt!

And let's spare a thought for the opposition - they turned it into a half decent game. There were definitely squeaky bums in our house before the Lamps goal.

Ballack played consistently well.

Essien was our best player, but a silly booking means he'll miss the next match.

Kalou looked very good going forward.

Hilario made some crucial saves, I can't emphasise how awesome it is to have a player of his calibre to come in as a third choice goalkeeper.

I voted Essien - thought he was excellent. I agree the card was stupid but his reaction to missing the semi was to up his game for which he deserves great credit.

Tough one for me between Ballack and Essien but Ballack just gets it for the early goal although Essiens work for Lamps goal nearly nicked him it.

Kalou was good as well I thought.

Ballack for me.

Although Ballacks goal gave us a good start, it was Hilarios double save in the 2nd half that kept us in it with not long left in the match.

Just what you want from your 3rd choice keeper, reliability when called upon.

Chippy - thanks for that. You just said exactly what I wanted to say.

I just saw your post on the match thread and it looks like we saw the same game, cheers

What we saw was a team of individuals and the action from John Terry, when he left the pitch straight after the final whistle, is hard to explain.

Terry - unless he has got an injury - couldn't get off the pitch quickly enough and that's not like him at all.

Was it this bad??

As a football man myself, I don't know what to make of it - it's a very strange feeling watching this Chelsea team at the moment.

Michael Ballack put Chelsea ahead within three minutes and then they hit the woodwork and it looked like they were going to walk it... but it didn't happen.

It was just individual players - there was no fluidity about Chelsea's performance at all.

Fenerbahce gradually got into the game and they had opportunities, thanks to some very lax Chelsea defending, but didn't take them.

But the crowd were very quiet. The result was there and Chelsea will be happy with that but that was about it.
