I know they're out of contract, but why did we let it come to that? We could easily have extended those players contracts so as to get something for them this summer.
And I'm sure I've heard about players signing a new contract just before their old one runs out so that the club will be able to sell them, even if it's just a few weeks later.

At first I thought the same. But signing them just to sell them involves probably

1. improved wages
2. signing bonuses or payments to their agents
3. Dealing with locking down a player

I think the club would be looking at about 5m for each of these players.

Maybe Essien and Malouda are in the other boat. Maybe offering them new deals is a step toward selling them because the club believe they have genuine real resale value.

Either way good luck to Bossie and Sala and thanks for their contributions!

Perhaps we should get in touch with some top CGI artists to transpose pre-2010 Essien into games from this past season and see if we can trick a team into bidding for him.

Favorite Kalou moment (obviously):

Such a great moment. Was watching it in a two-story bar filled to capacity with scousers. There were 5 Chelsea fans, including myself, sitting at a table in the middle of them all. We lost it when Riise knocked it into his own net, all of us jumped out of our seats in unison and accidentally upended the table, spilling beer (don't worry, it was cheap sh*t) on the dejected fellows in front of us.

Bosingwa leaving is fine with me, he was great the first season then he just seemed to make many mistakes the following season's. great player but just loses concentration to much. Kalou is a surprise, I know he wants to go back to his old club but with the players leaving it would have been a great chance to prove what he's capable of, a classy player who scored us some important goals, I wish him luck.
Just hope the players that are leaving don't come back to haunt us.
Anyway I hope this rumor of Hulk possible joining is true, I think he'd work well along side Torres but we still need an explosive winger to whip quality balls into the box

Whilst i think it was the correct decision to let Kalou and Bossy leave, i would have prefered the anouncement to be Malouda and Paulo leaving, with possibly Kalou and Bossy leaving/negotiating. Out of the 4 my preference would have been to keep Kalou and Bossy over Malouda and Paulo.

I would give Essien 1 more year. He didnt look up to speed, but with a good pre season he may regain that edge.

Good news I think. Both players aren't good enough for us, especially with us trying to retain the Champions League next season (still feels great to say that, never thought I would!) and make a decent challenge for the title.

Has there been anything official yet though

According to the reports they were likely to be missing from our retained squad list that had to be submitted today but I've seen nothing from it?

Out of the lot of those guys , Essien is the one I would be most sad to see go. It would be fair to say that he was one of the most feared players by supporters of other teams and their players (ha ha). I wonder if he could regain some of that if he didn't have such  a long lay off.

the other guys , cheers fella's thanks for all your efforts and wish them well in the future.

Not to sad to see Bosingwa go, he was great to start with but after that injury he really was a shadow of his former self.

Remember the goal against West Brom, he had
such promise then

Kalou leaving is a little sad (didn't think i'd feel that way), he was strange in that he could be completely terrible.... then score.

The game QPhahaaaa sticks out (probably 'cos it was recent), the pass he gave to Torres to score was sublime, but 5 minutes before that he missed a short pass by metres.

Or that miss from the 2010 FA Cup final

So yeah I would have given him more time, the bloody footballing enigma

I am genuinely struggling to understand why anyone would want to see either Kalou or Boswinga retained. I wrote this in the Benayoun thread:

"Benayoun is in the same bracket as Kalou and Boswinga. Average at best and not good enough for where we want to be. These mediocre squad players need to be sold and replaced, or, better still, chances given to the most promising youth/reserve players".

Would Kalou or Boswinga get in the starting line-ups of Barca, Bayern, Madrid? Would they even make the bench? No siree, they wouldn't. Just look at Citeh this season, their back-up players in these positions were often Micah Richards and Adam Johnson, both far superior to Kalou and Boswinga IMO.

LIke most of you though, I would also release Malouda and, though I love the bloke to bits, Michael Essien as well. I don't think he can be the player he was after all his injury problems.
