The better team won today - no doubt. We were tired and had 2 days less rest than Chelsea, and the correct approach was to high press the hell out of United, which we're tactically susceptible to anyways. You had the ball in better areas and took more initiative. You also pushed your wingbacks so high up the pitch that Rashford had to keep dropping back in the whole first half, which took away the only threat we had going forward. Bruno was good but he had no one to pass out to. Lampard clearly watched how Southampton troubled us and the mistakes were repetitive. Credit to Reece James, Alonso and Azpi who had terrific games and snuffed out any chances we might create. Giroud's movement today was very good as well. Ole clearly had the right idea when he predicted and tried to match 3 at the back, but the moment Bailly went off we lost all shape and immediately conceded. Since then Lampard outclassed and outthought us, and you didn't even have to bring on Pulisic.
De Gea had 2 howlers - they're getting more frequent these days. He's won 4 POTY awards for us and has been our only consistently world class player since SAF left, but he's just fallen off a cliff since the World Cup debacle. We're at a very awkward place where a club legend is single handedly losing games for us. I have no idea how Ole will handle this - since DDG still has 3 years left on a mega contract. Henderson is clearly the better keeper on form, but how can you just dump a 29 yo keeper who still has world classes reflexes in some games?
I have to also acknowledge Jose and Lampard's comments on the refs favouring United worked all game. Chelsea committed 20+ fouls and got away without a single card. I understand a Chelsea forum might not agree, but that was foul by Zouma on Martial and should have been a penalty. Rudiger/Azpi/Kovacic in particular kept committing City-esque tactical fouls and got away with it, and United didn't have an answer for that. Perhaps it's karma for all the luck we had against Palace.
Just an overall bad day in office - our unbeaten run had to end at some point.

Massive props, always welcome here any time, even though we can be a pack of twats ourselves, hope you stick around! You'll still qualify for Europe, wouldn't even worry about that.
I'll even admit we got away with a lot of fouls this game, the Martial one was a freekick but not a penalty I think, I'm 100% certain it was just outside the box. In terms of refereeing performances we definitely got the rub of the green this game. As for De Gea he should be saving the first two, especially the 2nd one, that was awful. 3rd one he could do much better also, looks like you'll have to move on from him.
But f**k me I have to say, you can't persist with Maguire, truly awful defender when under pressure.

Gotta agree that VAR have been quite dodgy this season... yeah both the incident yesterday and the Fernandes pen vs Villa were wrong decisions. I'm quite sure we would've spanked Villa anyway, but we didn't look sharp yesterday so who knows what would've happened if CP got a pen.
In the Soton game the Romeu ankle breaker vs Greenwood wasn't even reviewed (which imo was about as red as they come) and also a sliding challenge vs Martial that ended up with studs on the knee one or two games prior to the Southampton one wasn't reviewed either. VAR needs to become more consistent and a screen for the ref to watch for possible penalties or red cards just might have to become a thing like it is in the CL.

Come on, I'm sure you would take your position over ours, you might say that now, but if you were offered Pogba injured, or transfer ban, you know full well what you would pick. No doubt Pogba's injury effected your creativity, but when I look at the United squad you seem to have more depth than we do, why is Juan Mata still in the side if he's able to offer that?
I can't subscribe to the idea that Ole had a harder job than Lampard did this season, it's just not true. Before the start of the season how many people predicted United would finish above us? I'm predicting the overwhelming majority did, and the ones who didn't were optimistic Chelsea fans. Bottom line is, Ole shouldn't be behind Chelsea, he got the privilege of buying Fernandes because he wasn't producing the results and instantly you were firing, Lampard never got those privileges. Even in January he was essentially asking for new players but the board didn't want to splash the cash since we have a history of bad January signings.
I can see what you're saying, you've just had some horrible years under Mourinho and now you're finally starting to see things click, and some positive play. But honestly, you should still be doing a lot better, with the money spent and still grasping for a top 4 finish just isn't good enough. Ole isn't the man for that job in my opinion, neither were the last 4 managers actually. Whoevers making the majority of the decisions at your club needs booting (Woodward I'm guessing) because the recruitment has been terrible. I thought Chelsea were bad, that season we signed Morata, Bakayoko, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, etc. Now that was a bad wasn't it? It's been like that at United since Ferguson left, I can only name a few players you've signed that have been worth the money, fortunately for you, the majority of them are still playing for you now, so it looks like things are looking up. But still, if Ole has you competing for the title next season I'll be surprised.

Gandalf Greyhame got a reaction from Slojo in Following our Nearest & Dearest Rivals 2019/20I cannot comment on the w**kfest. Every club has an irritating section of gloaters who think their club is the second coming of Pep's Barcelona after winning a game or two. United has more fans than most clubs, so it follows that there will be more gloaters and irritating fans. If you're pissed, it's probably rightly so. We're definitely better than the surprsingly smug folks over at Foxestalk or the cringey clusterfeck that is RAWK, but those are very low standards.
Also, yes, we have had years of transition and yes we are the second highest spending club after Man City since SAF left. But a lack of success despite that is a damning indictment against the management at the highest level (read: Woodward) and the managers who couldn't make that investment count for diddly squat (read: Mourinho). Woodward showed a big wad of notes to everyone, and he got swindled by his own managers. We've pissed money away like anything, yep. But to judge Ole's transfers you should consider Maguire (overpaid by about 30m), AWB (underpaid by about 10m), Dan James (a punt for the future at 15m, but not ready right now) and in the January window - Bruno Fernandes (who's been a revelation since he joined).
After adding Maguire and AWB, defensively we're the third best side in the league (35 GA) behind Sheffield United (33 GA) and Man City (34 GA) without being the defensive outfit we were under Mourinho. As for Bruno, I think his numbers speak for themselves. Ole hasn't been properly backed yet, and he's done very well with the signings made so far.
I don't agree with the harsher circumstances, either. For instance, from your list - Pogba missed 39 games due to his ankle injury from September last year till the restart, Rashford missed 12 games this season, and was out for almost a month and a half with his back issues. Since the restart, he's not looked like himself. Similarly, Martial missed 14 games, too. United don't have the squad to deal with such injuries to key players. Without Pogba, there was no creativity from midfield at all, without Rashford we had no wide goal threat (no RW at the club, but that's another story) and without Martial we didn't have a striker. Matic blows hot and cold - any run of games leaves him knackered very easily, and De Gea has had his worst season for United since SAF left (he's arguably cost us more points this season with individual errors). Fans of every club bar Man City will feel that their backups are terrible, but unless you've had a season where you've been forced to provide 118 combined appearances (6880 minutes) to the world-beating trio of Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and Dan James - I would argue that you don't really know how poor United's backups to the starting XI are. It was torture to see our one or two decent players being double marked while the rest of them made buffoons of themselves. The only reason we were a counter-attacking team was because we had no creativity to break down a defence at all, and every team with a low block nicked points off us very easily till Bruno came along.
He has flaws, too, obviously. He's very late and passive with his subs, and sometimes he's too ambitious for his own good. We should not played our first teamers for 120 minutes against Norwich in the cup - it is coming back to haunt us now. Even now he should be resting the likes of Martial, Bruno, Matic and AWB against you lot in the semi-final, but watch him field his knackered best XI and get another injury just in time for that Leicester game. He is also too stubbornly faithful - he stuck with Lingard way more than he should have and we lost Angel Gomes as a result. We should have dropped De Gea for a game or two after his horror shows of late, but he persisted and De Gea promptly dropped more points for us (see him not coming out to claim the ball in yesterday's corner).
Like I said, it remains to be seen if he can actually win silverware with United but the squad is a shambles thanks to the wrecking ball of a manager we had earlier and the ineptitude of the recruitment but Ole is the first manager who's shaping the squad in a positive way. There's a togetherness to the team, we try to play positive football and we have some great results under him already. His man management is a far greater asset than his tactical ability. The restart has been the first time that Pogba, Martial, Rashford and Bruno played together.and we scored 14 goals in 4 games. 1 point from 3rd with 3 games left in the season is quite a remarkable achievement for Ole considering the players he had available throughout this season and we still have the Europa League left.

Gandalf Greyhame got a reaction from Sexyfootball in Following our Nearest & Dearest Rivals 2019/20I don't think anyone is denying Lampard any credit. I'm on RedCafe as well, and he's pretty highly rated by quite a few. His ability to organise a defence is under question, but he doesn't have his players yet.
Ole is doing a very good job at United considering that we have far lesser squad depth than Chelsea and have had Pogba, Martial and Rashford miss huge parts of the season. There is a sense of unity about the team, and we try to play attractive attacking football. It remains to be seen if he can win silverware with us, but he's definitely the correct man for our transition into a side that looks and plays like Manchester United are supposed to. His decision to let go of Lukaku and Sanchez and trust Martial up front and give chances to Greenwood are both masterstrokes. After the damage Jose had done to Shaw's confidence, he's got him playing well again, too. And he always gets decent results in the big games.

Gandalf Greyhame got a reaction from Argo in Following our Nearest & Dearest Rivals 2019/20Well, that was disappointing.
Feels like every single time we have had a chance to break into the top four, the team collectively sh*ts the bed. The mentality to thrive under pressure is still missing at United.
The starting XI is absolutely knackered for us, and it is starting to show. We can't do much about it because despite all the money we've spent, we have no squad depth at all. That's the reason Pogba missing for 6 months derails our season, or Martial being out for two months dries up our goals or Rashford being out of form makes us look toothless. Today it was both Pogba and Bruno being too tired to deal with their high press in particular. De Gea in particular should have come out to clear that corner, but good keeping is apparently a rare thing these days.
Top teams have this characteristic of picking up points when they're having a bad game - I don't United are there yet.
All that said, Greenwood was lucky to get away unscathed from that loathsome Romeu tackle - I understand that oppo fans think it was karma for Bruno's penalty last game but think of him doing that to Pulisic and breaking an ankle. I have no idea how he was not even given a yellow, forget a red. They saw us tired and left in late tackles all game.
Anyways, the race for CL keeps getting more interesting. I wonder if this spurs on Chelsea to actually get a result against Liverpool. My hopes are tied to another Leicester capitulation next week, however.

Gandalf Greyhame got a reaction from erskblue in Following our Nearest & Dearest Rivals 2019/20An exciting turn of events in the race for top four is perhaps a good enough reason to post again after a long time.
I feel that Chelsea throw too many bodies forward in attack. That's an advantage because you have a wide range of players who can score or assist, and also a disadvantage given the number of times you leave yourselves open on the counter. That's what cost you with West Ham today, along with poor decision making from your center backs. But you look threatening when on the front foot - Pulisic in particular looks really special. Overall, though, I think quite highly of Lampard's style of play. His selections are a bit bizarre at times, but he's definitely promoted young players with confidence and got Chelsea playing some very good football (at least going forward). It is only going to get better with someone of Werner's quality coming in to lead the attacks. Given the proper backing, especially in defence, you could have a better squad than Liverpool.
United are playing with all first XI players fit after almost nine months, and our quality is showing now, I feel. But we don't have a right winger and our full backs aren't really good going forward. Maguire and Lindelof have kept a lot of clean sheets but one is extremely slow and the other is very weak in the air and in physical battles. The biggest problem for us at United is that our back ups are of extremely mediocre quality. James, Pereira and Lingard who on their best days wouldn't start for any top six club have had too much gametime this season. We're one injury to Pogba, Bruno, Martial or Rashford away from unravelling into mediocrity.
I lurk here to read Chelsea fan opinions, and I see that you're worried about Liverpool and Wolves games. As an opposition fan, I think the Palace and Sheffield United games might be bigger banana skins.

Haven't posted here in a while, but was thinking I should. Not because Rashford scored a wonder goal, but because I like the football you folks are playing so far. You move the ball quickly, you play with youth and you always look to attack. Quick transitions (usually) to the wings, and there's always a man at multiple places to attack the goal - near post/farpost/edge of the box. Tammy is being managed very well, as is Mount/Tomori. I think the future is bright for Chelsea under Lampard. The full back James seems like a real talent.
As for the game itself, I'll admit to two things - one, Rashford never gets those Ronaldo-esque knuckleballs on target (neither does Ronaldo) and two, we had the slice of luck from reffing decisions. It was a close game, and little margins like that change everything. McT was imperious for us, though, as was young Brandon Williams. However, I hope you are aware that Chelsea didn't create a lot of chances either, whatever the reasons may be. In the first half at least, we man marked you out of your game plan. Towards the end of the second half, by the time we shifted to a back 4 and started leaving spaces, you seem tired.
I loved it when Ole and Lampard were having a laugh towards the end - classy folks both of them. Ole may or may not be with us for the next league game against you folks (he'll need a brilliant run of results again to save himself the job and us fans from the drama of another managerial merry-go-round) but that was definitely a welcome change after Mourinho's cold relation with Conte.

Gandalf Greyhame got a reaction from Jezz in Jose Mourinho threadI'm very glad to see the rest of the forum doesn't agree with your views at all. That's a shameful way to address your most successful manager ever. Even poor posters at RAWK have more class than this - this is Bluemoon-towards-United levels of hatred. Get a grip.
As for Jose's falling-out tendency, I believe things will be different at Manchester United. At United, the manager has always been given full reign and control over ... well, everything.
1) SAF fell out with Beckham - he was sold to RM. Fell out with Stam - gone. Fell out with Keane - kicked out. The list with SAF is endless.
2) Moyes was allowed to clear out the entire backroom staff, take care of youth academy, change training methods. SAF, whose influence still loomed large wanted Rooney to sold to your folks at Stamford Bridge - but Moyes was allowed to override that and hand him the silly contract that every football fan and his dog now knows of.
3) LVG kicked out the likes of RVP, Nani, Rafael and co. All fan favourites, all SAF favourites. He was allowed to do that. He changed the entire style of football - he was allowed to do that, till the day poor results got him sacked. And most notably, when Di Maria fell out with LVG, it was the player who got the boot, not the manager. When wonderboy Januzaj was dropped, no one apart from LVG was in support of it. He was still allowed to do that.
So if Mourinho falls out with top players, or creates a toxic environment - everything will be done to ensure that he is comfortable again. We don't have a DoF (yet, I don't know about these rumours about Monchi) , and our CEO is not a football man. Players will be sold, staff will be released, fan favourites will be ignored. Even if the results are not favourable, the manager will be given a lot of time to set things right (something that has never been afforded to Mourinho either at RM or at Chelsea).
At United, the manager dictates it all - and that is probably one of the reasons why Mourinho always wanted the seat, and why he may actually succeed in establishing a dynasty at Old Trafford, again.
Time will tell, let's see.
