clubhappy Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 We all rate Zola as our best ever player/Signing and quite rightly . My young lad asked me today , after Zola who would i pick as our best signing . Difficult to leave out Ricky, Frank, Drogs, Marcel, but Essien is just an outstanding footballer . After watching him today i saw a future Chelsea legend , a player who has everything , skill, passion, drive , strength, incredible fitness and stunning ability. He's a player to be proud of , a player every other premiership and European team would look at and say , 'Wish he played for us'. The future for us is bright with this guy , and my confidence rises everytime he appears in our starting 11. Absolute class.
The Moos Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 And let's not forget that Essien can play on almost every position known to man. We've seen him play well as a central defender, as a wing back, as a defensive midfielder, as a winger, as an attacking midfielder and I'm almost sure that he played something like a striker once too. Basically only LB and keeper left for him to try out and I wouldn't be surprised if he did well there too.
evissy Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 He is in top 5 of best signings since Gullit-era. Zola is numero uno for me and that is very very hard to beat. Frankie is probably after him, then maybe Essien and Cech.
Virosh Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I love Essien and I think he is making history with his time with us. He has abilities and commitment of a sort I have not seen in any player so far. He is a world-class player by any measure and maybe a future super-duper star. But there is no way he is a better buy than Lampard.
andy Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I take back what I said about Essien in another thread about being our savoir.. well, sort off.. Think he has come out all guns blazing and he was awesome yesterday, best he has ever been for us. But I still maintain we have short memories, particularly in midfield he had some very average games for us, his best games for us where from right back and some impotant goals from there, maybe because he was allowed to get forward more. Anyway, he has some way to go to beat Zola, but I think we will find when Frank leaves, retires or whatever, he will replace Zola.. there I said it  .. it took this season to believe that, and he didnt shine yesterday because Essien took the spot light but you just cant take Frank's record away, easy our best signing.
midlandblue Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 our best signing (all things considered) was Carlo
sexelk Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 i would have to give it to pierluigi casiraghi he only ever scored one goal but what a memorable goal it was. brought tears to my eyes brought tears to phil babbs eyes as well

The best Chelsea signing in 90th years of 20th century for Chelsea is Frank, of course. But Essien is very decent too... And picking the 3rd best I`m splitting between Drogba and Cech..... The worst, the most expensive signing and the biggest waste at the same time , which had strongly influenced JM`s career at Chelsea, was SHEVCHENKO....

Totally Agree. But the way he has come back and given the team a lift is just what we needed at this stage of the season. When we have had to suffer the lacklustre performances from the likes of Ballack, Deco, Malouda and (at times) Mikel, to see Essien charging about makes you realise exactly what we've been missing. But he still has a LONG way to go before he could possibly rival Lamps as our best recent signing. Lamps IS Mr consistent and the fact he hardly ever misses a game means he's Mr value for money too!

g3.7 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 not yet- has been surprisingly wonderful since his return from injury, but even in the abramovich era there have been better signings, such as maka, cech, joe cole, carvalho... yesterday we saw essien at his best, but that has come relatively rarely in his chelsea career. who knows, maybe he needs a manager with a clear idea of how to use him (was great to see hiddink keep him in a position to get forward and let ballack sit deep and start moves), maybe he is one who will find consistency relatively late (like, don't shoot, gerrard for example).

B) Surely Bogarde?! ;) Essien, Lampard and Zola are easily Chelsea 3 best ever signings. All 3 love Chelsea and will do anything to support the team. Imagine of Zola was around the same time as these 3 will with a few years left in him? Oh, I'd love that.
loz Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 IN the last 30 years Zola and Lampard are clearly our best two signings. I wouldn't say Essien is third though. Carvalho, Makelele and Cech are all ahead of him in my opinion. I wouldn't start comparing these people with the players in the 50s, 60s and 70s as there really is no way of comparing properly. Zola is our gratest ever player in my opinion but Lampard is our greatest ever signing.

Totally agree with all that, but would like to add that the signing of Ruud Gullitt made more people sit up and take notice of Chelsea. It made other players think about coming too. Also Kerry and David Speedie were two great signings, coming as they did, when we were just starting to emerge from the Dark Days and needed someone to worship.
Tea Bar Boy Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 not selling JT to Huddersfield and getting him to sign a pro contract with us has to be up there ?
Gem Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Can't really argue with Lampard... Seconded. Although I could... but then I'd forgive him.
loz Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Seconded.Although I could... but then I'd forgive him. And they do say making up is the best part!
WoodmanBlue Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Lampard 100% - so glad he wasn't sold to Inter! Too soon for Essien, maybe in the future but i still put Cech and Riccy ahead of him and if we are talking about recent times then my top 3 are: 1 - Zola 2 - Lampard 3 - Maka
Mr Chelsea Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 got go for dennis wise myself but i'm not sure how far back we're going if we're going last 10 years then lampard is top of the list, but if we're going last 20 years then wisey gets it hands down
clubhappy Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Never for a miniute would i consider leaving Lamps out , maybe my original post was slightly misleading , my intention was really just an admiration for Essien and the prospect of him becoming a legend at the Bridge in years to come. Lamps is a household fav here ,yes we have the fridge magnets to prove it :P . I suppose it's difficult to choose one player over another , especially if you've grown up watching Osgood, Hollins, Hutch, Droy, Nevin, Dixon, Maka etc etc .
mad_mac Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Tough to call, if it is recent memory, modern era, start of the Premiership then there are a few contenders. If it is of all time then what about Osgood, Hutch, Dixon, Speedie? Anyway, sticking with the modern times, my favourites have to be Ruud, Vialli, Carlo, Zola, Desailly, Lampard, Terry, Cech, Essien Scott
sergeyMS Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) IN the last 30 years Zola and Lampard are clearly our best two signings. I wouldn't say Essien is third though. Carvalho, Makelele and Cech are all ahead of him in my opinion. Maybe I can agree, in terms of achievements at Chelsea, Carvalho was a better signing then Essien, because Essien is much younger than Riccy and he`s yet to show himself, but in terms of quality brought to Chelsea with the signed player, it`s a very arguable opinion. Carvalho was always the 2nd defender in Chelsea, after JT, while Essien, in my opinion, is the best box-to-box midfielder in EPL when he`s in-form. And Makelele signing was like smiling a bit and saying `Cheers` to Real management. They smiled at us too first, but then start to tear hairs on their own head with both arms. :D Cech is the world-class KEEPER for 15 years, he`s great, of course. Edited March 17, 2009 by sergeyMS
