Posted June 3, 200916 yr Daily Mail reporting we have signed him up on a free. Article here If it's true, let me be the first here to say - WELCOME! Oh, and score more of these! Edited June 3, 200916 yr by ethicalstrategy
June 3, 200916 yr Yes i agree at least we bought some one young this time who isnt just famous over rated and over paid........and who will be very hungry to prove himself and he will also make franko and some of the other lads push harder for a place...!!!
June 3, 200916 yr It is a possible fantastic pickup for it I would love the signings of Sturr and Pato as the youth signings from this class Along with our experience, this could really, really help us next year
June 3, 200916 yr It is a possible fantastic pickup for itI would love the signings of Sturr and Pato as the youth signings from this class Along with our experience, this could really, really help us next year Great signing if true however i cannot seem to find anything on espn, goal, bbc, etc. Has this been confirmed??
June 3, 200916 yr Interesting, if this is true then it means that either Ancelotti has known for a while he was coming here and noted Sturridge as a target. Or the club had marked him as a target before Carlo was appointed and now he's here the club are already dictating who he's to sign. The reason I say this, is one the speed of the signing, and two the fact that this was a rumour about 10 days ago. I wonder, if true, what that means for our strike force? Is that our "summer signing" in the strike force and we'll have Drogba, Anelka, Sturridge, Di Santon as our strike force...assuming you don't count Kalou as a striker. Scott
June 3, 200916 yr Actually, we've been tracking Sturridge for years now. We first tried to sign him when Mourinho was in charge, before he broke into the Manchester City first team.
June 3, 200916 yr Have we agreed to pay him 55k per week which he was demanding from Citeh? Looks quite steep to me even for a player of his talent.
June 3, 200916 yr It's not confirmed. Exactly, I'll only believe anything when it's on the Official site. That said, I still can't believe the Barry/Man City deal. EDIT: Although............. Wikipedia have updated their page, so it MUST be true. Sturridge's Manchester City contract ended at the end of the 2008/09 season, and he signed for Chelsea on 3rd June 2009 when he became Carlo Ancelotti's first Chelsea signing. I can't believe I copied my Geography A-Level off that site. Edited June 3, 200916 yr by Gem
June 3, 200916 yr Great news if this turns out to be true. Every time I've watched him, he has looked a dazzling prospect. Lightning fast, very creative and has a decent shot. A very, very good signing indeed.
June 3, 200916 yr Another young english talent that we snap up only to leave rotting in our reserves for five years before finally letting them leave taking a massive step down and having missed out on the development in some of the most important years of their career. However, if it's true and we play him, then that's great news.
June 3, 200916 yr Agreed Barn, although i would also add that you have to worry for Franco now, as with another young striker coming in, presumably ahead of him in the pecking order, he may well have a hell of a job to get any sort of first team chance. If it's true, here's hoping they are both good enough and both flourish next season.
June 3, 200916 yr This one really puzzles me. Lets face it, City were not that great last season and yet he still failed to establish himself there. What makes him think he has any chance of getting first team football with us and it can't be down to money as I'm sure City could pay him as much / probably more than we can. Very strange. Could just be a way of us increasing our English contingent for the new rule changes - whenever it is they are coming in? Edited June 3, 200916 yr by Nibs
June 3, 200916 yr Its an interesting signing, not least because it raises some questions. I mean, thats four strikers we have now (Sturr/DiSan/Anel/Drog). Surely we wont need any more will we ? But is it good enough ? We are being linked with Pato/Ageuro,Villa, Dzeko etc but if one of those was to come in surely one of the old three will be going. Reports are now suggesting that Drogba is going to be offered a new contract, Anelka wont be sold im sure, so Di Santo ? A bit unfair one would think. On top of that we hear Shev may be coming back .... It doesnt really make sense to me. Im sure Sturridge isnt going to be our only striker signing but if we are going to buy someone else, why have we picked him up ? As for the player, well young ? check, english ? check. Great stuff, but i dont know anything about him. Our only gauge will be to see how the Man City fans are reacting to his departure.
June 3, 200916 yr He's only 19!! I very much doubt he's going to get the playing time you guys are expecting of him. The way I see it, we still need a quality, experienced striker...I'm thinking that Di Santo and Sturridge would be our Macheda and Welbeck (albeit a bit older) - they should get their time on the field, but I don't think they are going to be considered as first team regulars this season. If we were to sign Pato for the £45m that I read we'd be bidding, it really sets us up for the next 10 years at least in terms of strikers...a nice place to be in!
June 3, 200916 yr Our only gauge will be to see how the Man City fans are reacting to his departure. Don't think they are over bothered (probably because of the big name signings they are getting linked with!). Consensus seems to be he has a bit of an attitude problem. That and very injury prone (hope we haven't signed another Robben?). Assume he would have had to go through a very thorough medical?
June 3, 200916 yr If we do sign Sturridge, it must have something to do with getting more English/British players in the squad - not that he's a bad player, far from it, but we don't exactly need him. If Sturridge is in our first team squad next year, and we also sign a big name striker as well, then I reckon di Santo will go out on loan somewhere, and Kalou will leave.
June 3, 200916 yr Which would be good. Di Santo would benefit from a year's loan at one of the promoted clubs IMO. And I think it would be wise to let Kalou go if we can bring in Aguero instead. Especially as there is ANC again next year.
June 3, 200916 yr Great player... but I worry for Di Santo's future... Also, it's been removed from Wikipedia, so I think it's far from a done deal. We still probably need another striker, because Drogba and Kalou (assuming they're still here by then) will be off to Africa in January, and we can't really rely on Anelka, Di Santo and Sturridge alone, judging by how often he's been played in the past. Even Hiddink seemed more willing to start Belletti up front than Di Santo...

Ha, I thought of Macheda and Welbeck too. And I also agree about the Di Santo loan deal, maybe for the first half of the season so we can have him back for ANC.
June 3, 200916 yr Great to be linked with a young English striker but considering the rumours about Drogba being offered a new contract and maybe even Sheva returning, it can only spell the end of the road for Di Santo and probably Kalou. Especially if we were to sign one of the many others we've been linked with.........Pato, Arnautovic, Dzeko. Would Sturridge ever get a chance??? or would he just rot away for a while like so many other talented youngsters before going out on loan year after year like Sahar and Sinclair.
June 3, 200916 yr Maybe ancelotti is looking to play 2 up front. That way if we ended up with 4 or 5 strikers, they wouldn't all be competing for the lone striker role, there'll be 2 positions up for grabs. And with drogba off to the ANC, we probably would need that many strikers (this is assuming that he will want to play 2 up front).

Looks like if we get Sturridge, the front two will be Anelka and Drogba, in the ANC it'll be Anelka and Sturridge/Di Santo in rotation, to give them both experience and to see who would be the better substitute.
