Posted August 22, 200915 yr The album that brought DB to the masses is about to be 40 years old. From my teens through most of my life DB has been a major contributor to my soundtrack. The task my firends tell us your favorite DB track, just one, no lists (Steve) I know it's difficult to pick one from such a vast catalogue, but have a go. Mine Rock 'n' Roll with Me (Diamond Dogs)
August 22, 200915 yr Ashes to Ashes From the very first time I heard I've never done good things I've never done bad things I never did anything out of the blue I knew it was a song that I would always consider special. Bowie is, for me, the greatest ever solo artist. I have only ever seen him once in concert (at Old Trafford Cricket ground) and he absolutely demands attention on the stage.
August 22, 200915 yr I thought it was a bit of an insult for Bowie to be regarded as part of the Glam Rock era , yes he had an image that fitted in with that style but when he's featured in doccumentries along side artists such as Sweet, Mud, The Rubettes, Alvin Stardust etc etc , its taking the piss slightly. Bowie song for me has to be Starman , Top of the pops and Mick Ronson shoulder to shoulder is a tv monemt i love.
August 22, 200915 yr I must confess I never really 'got' Bowie and as a result never got into him. However, I am perfectly willing to give him another chance. Where do you recommend I start?
August 22, 200915 yr As you don't really know him you may as well do what most people do and start with a greatest hits package of some sort. Like most artists a lot of his most memorable tracks are album ones however the greatest hits / singles collection thing gives you an introduction via the commercially successful tracks.
August 22, 200915 yr See the mice in their million hordesFrom Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads Rule Britannia is out of bounds To my mother, my dog, and clowns But the film is a sadd'ning bore 'Cause I wrote it ten times or more It's about to be writ again As I ask you to focus on Sailors Fighting in the dance hall Oh man! Look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show
August 22, 200915 yr Forgot all about youtube: In case anyone wondered, the song is about heroin. And I've never been a smackhead either!
August 22, 200915 yr Very tough, very tough. One song Tim ?I was bought up on Bowie. My Dad was Led Zep my Mum was Bowie. I never stood a chance. Where do you start, i mean just one song?! Can i not even go for an album (Low)? No , you say Tim ? Well in that case it has to be...'Rock N Roll Suicide' Tough. Its like Sophies Choice.
August 22, 200915 yr Starman gets the nod from me, I think it was the first Bowie song I ever heard and it has been my favourite since.
August 22, 200915 yr Very difficult! I was gonna go with "Changes", but opted for... Have to go with this although I was torn between this and Loz's choice, or Gene Genie - f**k. While Bowie is hugely successful I still think he is under rated at the same time.. I just don't think people realise, especially now, how good and influential he has been. I know these things are always down to taste and you shouldn't impose but surely Bowie must be acknowledged as one of the most dynamic and 'different' stars of many eras. I used to love how my dad got so wound up at that 'freak' on the telly - just made me pay more attention. The drums in Sound and Vision and the overlayed vocals are brilliant - one of those songs you can just play in your head and it makes you feel good and 'cool'. The Laughing Gnome - well what can you say
August 22, 200915 yr this track sums Bowie up at his peak for me. I was lucky enough to see him twice live. great memories.

August 22, 200915 yr I have to say, this is an excellent thread Tim ive spent a night on youtube playinganything from the excellant Lady Grinning Soul to the little bombadier . Bowie was very diverse in his tunes.... a diversity that was eventually to lose me as a fan.
August 23, 200915 yr Actually, that said, I do like 'All the Young Dudes', which Bowie wrote for Ian Hunter to try and get Mott the Hoople back on the recording circuit.
August 24, 200915 yr Spent a bit of time up north around this time and this was like our little anthem, not typical Bowie and more in the laughing gnome style
August 24, 200915 yr This is another of those Questions where the Answer will change tomorrow. For me, today: Five years, just sets up the rest of the album brilliantly and it sounds sooo great
