November 4, 201312 yr I watched MacGruber last night and found it hilarious. It's a piss-take of cheesy action movies with a ridiculous plot involving a stolen nuclear warhead and is full of silly set-pieces and genuinely laugh out loud moments. The main character MacGruber is an 80s throw-back who, having spent the past 20 years living in a hut in Ecuador, is called back into action when his arch-nemesis (played by a fat Val Kilmer) threatens to nuke the White House, or something. It has a terrible rating on IMDB, which for a comedy is often a good sign.
November 5, 201312 yr Has anyone ever seen a film called "At Play In the Fields of the Lord"? I saw it years ago and thought it was brilliant. For some reason it costs a relative fortune to buy it on DVD. Normally you can pick up a film that age for a few quid. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101373/
November 9, 201312 yr Here's the film I was telling you about. I've just watched it on youtube. It was filmed on location in Amazonia. I think it is a brilliant film, but it will not be to everyone's taste.

It sounds like an interesting film, and the amazon setting is very appealing to me. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how off-putting the three-hour run time is to me though; I blame smart phones for destroying my attention span.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit how off-putting the three-hour run time is to me though; I blame smart phones for destroying my attention span. I know. I have to be honest with you - I watched it in two sittings! Yet the first time I saw it at the cinema I sat entranced throughout. I suppose the big screen makes all the difference. If I ever win obscene money on the lottery, the house I buy will definitely have a cinema room!
November 9, 201312 yr I went to see Gravity last night and if you are only going to see one film this year then make it this one. It's a very simple story about a couple of astronauts who end up adrift in space after their shuttle is destroyed in a spectacular but devastating chain reaction of space debris. The critics have been fawning over it and for once I agree. I wasn't entire convinced I would like it at first, mainly because it stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and I'm not usually a fan of either of their films, but both put in very good performances here. Clooney always seems to play the same character to me and has gotten quite good at it, but Sandra Bullock is a revelation. Her character spends much of the film freaking out and she's never less than convincing. One of my favourite parts is when she is tumbling out of control into space and the camera fixes on a close-up of her eyes with the Earth and stars spinning past behind her. The shot lasts for quite a few minutes and the way the initial terror in her eyes gradually turns into desperation when she realises she has finally lost all radio contact... if she wins the Oscar next year then it will be well deserved. It's also the best 3D movie I've seen by quite a long way (not that I've seen that many), it really feels like you are up there with them at times. Edited November 9, 201312 yr by bluedave

I suppose the big screen makes all the difference. If I ever win obscene money on the lottery, the house I buy will definitely have a cinema room! I'll probably end up doing the same. I used to be able to watch long films at home it but now I can't remember the last time I sat down for three hours in one go. It's different in the cinema because there's not much else to do except to watch the film, but at home there are just too many distractions...

I really don't like either actor. Also, I read about the ending, and boy, what a load of bollox. Yeah, that could really happen, right? Nope, not in a million years.

Nope, not in a million years. Ah well that's your loss. As for the ending, I honestly have no idea what you mean, quite a few things happen during the movie that would be unlikely but I don't remember seeing anything and thinking "that's impossible". I've never liked the "it couldn't happen" argument when used to criticise a work of fiction anyway.
November 10, 201312 yr Saw the Hobbit, Part I a few days ago on HBO. Boy, did Peter Jackson really mess up that one. Confusing, dark, boring as hell for the most part, and no character development. The book was good. Always thought the film would be bollocks so I haven't bothered watching it. Anyone seen Escape Plan? awesome film. Edited November 10, 201312 yr by JoeyN
November 11, 201312 yr Saw 'Gravity' on Saturday night in the 3D IMAX in a cinema at Swiss Cottage. Good movie, some really cool effects, tense.... only 3 characters in the whole film! It was a bit predictable...but good. Its one of those films that once you've seen you wouldnt rush to watch it again, but it was good. If that makes sense. 8/10
November 12, 201312 yr The 'beach' thing is what I am referring to. It's hard to talk about the ending without spoiling the film, so I'll just say that I thought the way it ended was awesome and believe that it was intended to be symbolic.
November 12, 201312 yr OK, I'll buy that, as I heard someone say something to the same effect. One a plus note, I just finished "Bad Monkey" by Carl Hiaasen, and wow, that was a fun read! I will definitely read more books by this author. If you live 'Pulp Fiction' type of books, you will love him, if not, then maybe not so much.
November 12, 201312 yr I've read about 4-5 of Carl Hiaasen's books and enjoyed them all, I've not read Bad Monkey yet though. The style and humour of his stories always made me think they'd make a good Coen Brothers movie.
November 12, 201312 yr Exactly! I heard that the Striptease movie was based on a Hiaasen novel. That movie is notorious in the U.S. as one of the worst movies ever, but I have never seen it so I cannot comment as to whether or not that is true. It did railroad Elizabeth Berkeley's career, however.
November 12, 201312 yr Went to see Philomena tonight - brilliant! Sad, funny, touching. Judy Dench was brilliant of course but I also thought Steve Coogan was the right mix of arrogant and caring.
November 18, 201312 yr I watched 'Montevideo, Bog te video' last night. Loved it, best footie-related flick I've seen in years. It was all in Serbian so I could watch it without the need for subtitles. It's about the efforts to get the Yugoslavian NT to the first World Cup. Cracking film, provides an accurate picture of how hard it was to get international football off the ground, how reliant it was on visionary men to put their neck/finances on the line to make it happen, etc. Add to that how you get BSK and FC Yugoslavia players to get on and play as a team (modern version: Partizan and Red Star, similar to the problem that Spain had with Barca/Madrid). Then there's newly-formed Yugoslavia's own internal issues...Don't want to give away too much but football, history and politics come together in a very interesting and entertaining film with some characters you can really relate to. Brilliant, must watch. Oh, and one of the actresses is drop-dead gorgeous http://mojtv.hr//images/5b978679-0fc9-44e8-ad2f-c6374a402431.jpg Edited November 18, 201312 yr by Teritus
November 19, 201312 yr The character that she plays is a bit of a trollop though I went to see Gravity last night and if you are only going to see one film this year then make it this one.
