December 17, 20196 yr The Long View on BBC Radio 4 this morning. It was an episode from a series which is regularly broadcast and compares current and recent events to events from history. This morning's episode was comparing the impeachment of Andrew Johnson in 1868 and the impeachment which has been drawn up against Trump. The impeachment of Johnson was the first to take place in the history of the U.S.A. Johnson had become chosen as Lincoln's vice-president and was promoted to President after Lincoln's assassination. Johnson was impeached due his misuse of power but he remained in office as the vote in the Senate missed obtaining the required two-thirds majority by one-vote. There were suspicions of senators being bought. The impeachment took place against the background of the recently finished American Civil War and what to do with the freed black American slaves. Johnson came from one of the southern states. A very informative programme. Worth listening to. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000c9rc Other programmes which have been broadcast have included making comparisons with the Brexit vote and the break from Rome in 16th century England and concerns over using Huawie on the U.K.'s 5G network in comparison with using Siemens equipment in Britain in WW2.
December 30, 20196 yr For over half a century, I was convinced that this song began: "Oh Nimbus, help someone, help someone" Not only that, but I spent an inordinate amount of that half century wondering to myself: "Who the f**k is Nimbus?"

Superb selection. I saw Mario Biondi at Clapham Grand a couple of years back. We were in the pub over the road debating whether to watch the support act; no one knew when MB would be onstage- we then spotted him playing the fruit machine and knocking back pints ( he was there a good half hour and was knocking em back) A mate said “ he’s not taking us South Londoners too serious, had he been at Ronnie Scott’s he’d be backstage working on his scales” Cut a long story he wobbled across the road- we followed- five minutes later he’s out there- gotta say he tore the place up for khazi paper- fantastic gig. He was on top form at Ronnie’s a bit later also. Next time was at our own Under the Bridge which is a fantastic venue ( I’d say the same if it was situated under say one of Loftus Roads rabbit hutch stands so I’m not being partisan); bit of a let down- too poppy promoting his new album. Swinging from branch to branch, caught the Blackbyrds at the Jazz Cafe just before Yuletide and they stormed it. BTW Yorkey or anyone else, last Saturday of the month, it’s Saturday Soul Affair @ The Burlington Arms Mayfair. Soul and Funk downstairs, dance jazz upstairs. Proper old crowd. £ 5 to get in 3PM to 11PM. It’s Groovy man!
January 9, 20206 yr I missed the Blackbyrds, but saw a review of their Under The Bridge gig that said pretty much the same. I saw they were touring with War and Cymande, bought tickets but now the tour has been cancelled. Got a refund, but I'd rather have seen the bands. Going to see Roy Ayers in April, which should be excellent, even if the bloke is 147 years old. Then the Isley Brothers (both of them) in June. Gotta see these old legends before they go dying on me.
January 9, 20206 yr Alison Moyet - 'Weak in the Presence of Beauty' taken from her 1987 Raindancing album. Haven't listened to this album for ages.

Sorry to hear about the cancellation. Yup, they won’t be around forever. Caught Roy Ayers ( Pubic Ayers brother) at the Forum about 18 months ago and the consensus was he’s too old, despite the rumour he’s taking cod liver oil capsules as suppository’s - loosens up the elbows and wrists... Talking of old codgers we saw Marlena Shaw at Ronnie’s a while back. I was pretty inebriated - thought I was entering the karzi but ended up backstage- clocked her without her wig on- she chased me out with a broom...
January 9, 20206 yr @Ewell CFC Do they still have Funky Sensation upstairs at Ronnie's on a Saturday night?
