Bruce Buck

CHELSEA chairman Bruce Buck has had a bizarre dig at rivals Liverpool.

Writing in his programme notes ahead of the 6-0 win against West Brom, Buck wrote: "Joe Cole has gone to a smallish club somewhere north of the M25."

He then repeated the barb, adding: "There are some new faces at the club. We welcome Yossi Benayoun who arrives from that 'smallish club north of the M25'."

The rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool - regular Champions League adversaries - intensified during the Jose Mourinho era.

Buck's jibe might have been in response to Cole claiming that he was joining one of the world's biggest clubs when he moved to Anfield - but it is unlikely to help relations between the two clubs.

Bruce is hilarious. Of course the papers will make it a huge deal but he a huge supporter and it's no different than one of us saying something as harmless as that.

Well...most of us don't get to publish it in a programme...but you know.

Agreed. Day in day out, throughout football, you hear accusations of the 'powers that be' in clubs having no connection with the fans. This sort of jibe is idle banter and idle banter is what makes football rivalry amusing. If he is criticised for this then he is criticised by idiots.

Bloody hell graham, been celebrating much!?

I think its a pretty funny bit of banter. Completely unneeded from a member of the board, but quality none the less. Now we just need a chant to immortalize it!

Why would we need to improve the relations? I think it is okay as long as we hate each other.

Laugh all you want in all caps or not, but he is very much a fan of our club which is why it is so great to have him. We're lucky he's with us.

I love Bruce, by far the best guy in our upper ranks.

I remember, after one of our cup wins, he was being interviewed and he had a tall blue and white hat on and was answering questions in such a dead pan manner it had Kenyon in stitches.

Gonna try and find that Interview later, it was brilliant.

Whilst it certainly has some amusement value and is in no doubt just a bit of fun , I think it was a little misguided actually printing the comments.

It has, unsurprisngly been picked up and is now back page news. I have no doubt it's going to cause outrage in the land of the grief addicts and will no doubt be bought up as a motivational tool when we play them. I can see the banners on the Kop/true home of football now.

Clearly the newspapers are going to miss the banter and irony part of it and just construe it as an all put attack on the club they love to love.

I would suspect Buck regrets not only saying it but also letting it go to print too now.

But, as you say, it is just a bit of harmless fun. Should we stop having a bit of harmless fun just because the papers will use it as a stick and because scousers will cry into their Harp lager over it?

Completely agree with this. Plus respect points for Mr Buck.

no of course not. I am just a bit wary. I know full well it's going to be bought up when we play liverrpool and heaven forbid , imagine if they win?!

You just know post match there will be an interview with Carragher where he will say "not bad for a little club just north of the M25 eh Geoff"

Then when we beat them we can say "Well well Carragher/Gerrard, you're a bit sh*t for the 'best team in England', eh? Enjoy your Europa League football..."

Very true but that is the case with all football banter. We slag them, they slag us, when they lose we throw their remarks in their face and vice versa.

Yep im with you. However I know full well if someone at Liverpool had made a similar style comment about us there would be outrage on here! If you give it you have to be able to take it!

Sure we can take it, but can liverpool? we have taken a lot worse the last few years, water off a ducks back.

That I totally agree with. One of the guys I play fives with is a Liverpool fan through and through (born and bred there until he moved North a few years ago) and he is typical in that suddenly Joe COle is the finest creatiivty in England etc etc but to be fair we both take lumps out of each other when it comes to mocking our respective clubs and both take it as much as we give it out. For me if you can't do that then you are missing out on half the fun.

And so it starts. Tweet from Henry Winter this afternoon "Great atmosphere at Anfield. Kop in full voice. Not bad for a smallish club north of the M25. Bruce Buck's #Chelsea would love such a noise"

Sure he is missing the point and taking it too seriously but honestly, we are not going to hear the end of this. Its going to get shoved down our throats at every opportunity.

Hes not far wrong about the atmosphere at the Bridge though to be fair..!

to hell with them.

remember their collective outrage when Mourinho walked past with his finger to his lips after they'd been giving him all kinds of stick all day.
