Holy smokes!

Glad he's ok

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has had treatment for malaria, according to Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian said the Ivory Coast forward picked up the tropical disease while on holiday, but is now fine and will start against Fulham on Wednesday.

Drogba complained of a fever on the eve of Chelsea's game at Liverpool on Sunday although he played the second half of the 2-0 defeat.

"We found out [on Monday] when tests showed he had malaria," said Ancelotti.

More to follow.

Scousers must have made a pact with the devil. Essien's injured toe, Lampard's inability to recover, Bosingwa falling ill right after coming back from year long absence and now Drogba being treated for malaria. Talk about bad timing.

Good thing he's okay.

How big are this man's balls?

- Stopped a Civil War (during half-time)

- Rightly told UEFA they are a "f**king disgrace" on live TV

- Played football when he had malaria

Don't mess with the Drog.

Can we gather from this that he's been shagging Ashley's (Ex) Mrs?

I guess JT will come down with it next............................

It would seem he has had this for a month but it's only just been diagnosed. Yossi appears to have had a problem (or not) prior to discovering he had torn his achilles. Questions to be asked of our medical department maybe?

Didn't Yossi get his current injury after the medical staff had taken the x-rays? I might be wrong but I think he only had a minor injury when they first checked, but then he got injured again (not sure how) and then the medical guys at Israels national team said that he was badly injured.

Two things

1) It usually takes around two weeks for the protozoans to replicate. It's hard to detect before then.

2) Malaria is hard to diagnose even if you know what you are searching for (Plasmodium are smaller than red blood cells), and it's hardly the first thing a doctor in Britain would think of.

Didier Drogba has been nominated for the BBC African Player of the Year Award, along with Samuel Eto'o, Asamoah Gyan, Yaya Toure and Andre Ayew.

You can vote for Didier here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/africa/2010/11/101111_afoy_2010_vote_page.shtml

The five candidates for the 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year award have been revealed on the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track.

Ghana pair Asamoah Gyan and Andre 'Dede' Ayew, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o, and Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast are included on the list.

The winner will be decided by African football fans, who have until 10 December to vote for their choice.

Voting for the award will take place via text and online.

The winner will be announced a week later on 17 December on the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track.

Both Sunderland striker Gyan and Marseille midfielder Ayew starred for Ghana as they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time.

The 29-year-old forward Eto'o played a vital role as his Italian side Inter Milan won the Champions League and a domestic double.

English Premier League side Chelsea secured the a league and cup double for the first time in their history, thanks in part to the goals of 32-year-old striker Drogba.

While, Toure, 27, became the highest-paid footballer in English football following the midfielder's move from Barcelona to Manchester City.

The shortlist was determined by a panel of experts across Africa who took into consideration individual skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency, impact on results and fair play.

"It has been a significant year for African football, with the World Cup being hosted in the continent for the first time and Angola hosting the Africa Cup of Nations," said BBC Fast Track presenter Farayi Mungazi.

"A youthful Ghana side lit up the World Cup so it is great to see the Black Stars duo of Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew receive their first nominations as well as the ever classy Eto'o, Drogba and Yaya Toure."

Last year's winner was Drogba of Chelsea and Ivory Coast after his consistent form and goals for club and country.

I wasn't sure if this was worthy of its own thread or if it is technically spam or whatever, so I stuck it in this Drogba topic.

There is nothing anyone can do if a player is injured in a match, but caught Malaria in while away from football in England? Come on, it's either terribly unlucky, or he has to learn better take care of himself. If my memory was correct, Drogba was ill after the internaitonal weekend (which he didn't participate), then he managed to catch Malaria to miss the Villa game. It was all downhill for him and the team.

Terribly annoying..

Maybe you should look into how Malaria can be caught before blaming Drogba for catching it.

How could he avoid catching it? Besides locking himself away in a room between games.

It's like ridiculing someone for getting stung by a wasp.

Well by using mosquito repellent, malaria prophylaxis, long clothes in the evening, etc

Im not saying that you can reduce the chance of getting malaria to 0% but there are ways to protect you.

Im not saying by the way that Drogba doesnt take care of himself... just speaking about Malaria in general.

Jesus, maybe next we can turn on any player who has the audacity to miss a game because of a virus. Maybe what we should do is make sure our players spend any spare time in hermetically sealed bubbles, just in case.

JESUS, read my post. I just described how to protect from Malaria. Which is certainly possible...

I dont blame Drogba for getting it.

And the reason for Malaria is a parasite...not a virus.

You obviously have no clue about the disease at all

Where did I say Malaria is a virus? Yet you tell me to read your post? Virus`s, illness`s, sickness etc happens to everyone, why do people think footballers iwll be any different? Drogba was unlucky yet icecoolguy is calling him for it.

So when you go out on nice warm summer evenings in Germany the first thing that comes to your mind is that you should dress up properply to make sure you do not catch malaria? To contract malaria in Europe is incredibly bad luck and definitely not down to Drogba not looking after himself. It's almost like getting your leg bitten by a tiger. In Africa.

Hmm, thinking of this, I can imagine Whinger dressed up as a giant mosquito... This could be a great remake of that scene :)

Erm.........Drogba has certainly spent some time of the last months in Africa. Or do you really think he picked up Malaria in London?? He could have been bitten in summer too..
