Feisty game! early  k o. We took far bigger numbers when we played down there.

3 iconic away games in a row. Man City, Pompey, Grimsby.

Saw us win the double at Wembley against Portsmouth, but wouldn’t swap the memory for that midweek game all those years back.

I was in the side stand where we had half the enclosure and the seats above. Most of Chelsea were behind the goal.

Before the game, where our end met the terraced home side, it looked certain as if it was gonna go off, but somehow it didn’t.

Lost me mates after the game and got the slow train back on me own- in pre mobile days if you lost your mates you might not see them for the rest of the trip.

Went to all three games, such a laugh and totally different to going away games now. Was in the seats at the side that started to get ripped out after being locked in after the game. Didn’t leave Pompey until 11pm and I had school the next day!!

Got a day off school for the Man City Friday night game!! Left the Bridge about midday by coach, had to go by coach for a suprise after the game. This was a three course meal and the first drink on Ken Bates and his wife at the time. He stood at the bar and bought everyone their drink as we filtered in. This was an invite to 200 fans who had been to the most games that season. What a night! Got back to the Bridge about 6am Saturday morning.

Grimsby was just the icing on the cake for a great season! So many fans there that got in for a tenner cash on the turnstiles. All ticket game and again the attendance was massively inaccurate as those that paid cash wouldn’t have been on the attendance. The gate men must have earnt a fortune.

I don’t think I’ve ever any pics of that game to this day, except maybe in the home programme straight afterwards.

Going back to loosing your mates, countless times over the years I’ve gone up with a group of blokes and come home with another- you meet people you know who’ve come by minibus scrounge a lift back or just fancy a change of company etc etc

European jaunts you’d not see people for days ( particularly in the 90s when there was still the novelty factor and you’d go for a few days), where people would go on mad benders....

Not sure of the year 1963 would be my guess but the state of the pitch !!

That's John Mortimore in centre picture, Terry Dyson to his right and Greavsie in the background, unfortunately decked out in white. I think you're spot on with the date.

I looked at the pitch state before looking at the picture caption and thought.

Must be the Baseball Ground, Derby.

It was always in a terrible state, even after just a couple of games back then !

That blue and white segment cap takes me back. Reminds me of the Reubettes ( Sugar Baby Love....!)

I always called them Baker Boy hats. Really wanted one as a kid but could never find one

I didn't go to that game Xmas game I think it was. Why did they put the Pompey near the West Stand to keep them from the East and Gate 13?.

Edit: forgot it was 88 Gate 13 not used anymore but I still can't think why they were closer to the West Stand when there's a big empty space further along. Dec 10th not exactly Xmas can't remember why I missed this one.

I think they packed two sections. There was still the no mans land by the corner pilon which a load of them strolled onto about half hour before kick off from memory.

Re Chelsea headware, before the Boro final in 97 I met the boys outside the Globe on Baker St for a beer- no ticket meself and bought a blue and white pork pie hat to wear back at the Woodman in Battersea- under scrutiny it turned out to be a Chesterfield FC hat- they lost in the semi v Boro and the surplus stock was sold down south to mugs like me!

Hats I’ve worn to Chelsea include blue and white and yellow and green bobble hats sometimes without the bobbles, Deerstalker, Baker Boy, and leather and fur aviator - when it’s cold such as In the Cup v Everton about 13 years ago when it was ....... draughty.

We played Pompey boxing day in that season of 83/84, yes remember going to the one in dec 88, if I remember right Roy Orbison had just died A few days before, and they were playing his songs on radio in car on way up to bridge, being 19 I'd never heard of him, to me at the time music was just house!!

I wore a deerstalker to Derby 83 in the cup and I wasn't alone the away end was like a like a Elmer Fudd convention.
