August 29, 20214 yr Don't think David Bailey took the second picture it's completely off scale the East Stand looks massive and the players look like an afterthought.

Got to admit @erskblue I'm trying hard to see the appeal of a guy who played for us a handful of times in an empty stadium is 😄. If you click on the picture it says played at Stamford Bridge it's the Valley.

I was sent a couple of pictures of my old estate one from the mid 70's one from 2015 and what's most noticeable is the 70's pic there's very few cars in the 2015 there parked everywhere. Can only think of one family of my mates who had a car in the 70's nothing to do with poverty just that hardly anyone drove. Bit different in the 80's when our generation of boy racers came along.

Car ownership definitely increased towards the late 70s. Back in the 60s I used play football in the street, that road is now very busy and there is no way possible that we could recreate that now. The noticeable thing from the pic is that all the cars/vans are British.

It wasn’t the player in the picture, it was the empty terracing in the background.

It was a weird ground similar to Chelsea in some respects massive side terrace and a pokey home end a bit like the East Stand and the Shed. First time I went there in 79 Chelsea ran there home end actually out of the stadium not to the side or there was segregation it was like they all ran en masse out of the ground for a 12 year old watching from the other end it was very impressive and was enough for a couple of non Chelsea mates to switch allegiance from QPR and Arsenal 😁 Edited August 30, 20214 yr by bluehaze

When looking again at your comment. I realised I had been mistaken! DOH. I will now go and write out lines stating ‘It was the Valley not The Bridge !’ I don’t always post ‘Legendary pictures’😀 and this one certainly proves it. I just liked the picture. August 31, 20214 yr I realise now the difference. The comparison I see is shown in the above picture. And yes there are spectators in too.😀 Just like this one.

A mate sent me some good photos but they've got Alamy all over which ruins them so I won't post them which is a shame. Roker Park 1975 was indeed, well lively. First game of the season, we had thousands up there. I’ll always think of it as the day that (H)Ickey made his name, or at least, his initial claim to fame. At the end of the game, he was standing on a crash barrier, holding a brollie, urging on the “troops” - we’re Chelsea, f**k these northern bastards - that kind of thing. Another memory of that day, is sometime later on, queuing up, waiting to be let in to the train station. In a garden were two beautiful white dogs with curly tails, Samoyeds I think.

I read about Hicky's rallying cry in one of Martin King's books. Someone told me MK has terminal cancer I enjoyed his books and he mentioned a couple of blokes I knew. I remember we played Fulham at the Cottage in 1980 Icky and his boys got on at FB me and my mates 13 at the time thought it was really exciting and told everyone at school.

As you say a lively day. All in all one of the better days of following Chelsea in those days including the train breakdown at St Neots, happy days!

A policeman on horseback, then a well known CFC fan leading what appeared to be thousands of our fans down the terraced street to the area behind their end and stopping to sing en masse maybe its because Im a Londoner as the Sunderland faithful scurried out onto the grass bank. All Sunderland fans seemed to be wearing yellow jumpers with green stars. On leaving Hickey standing on a rail structure at the top of the exit stairs giving out the orders.
