Liverpool get queues like that every fortnight- at the post office picking up their giros

That reminds me of Roger's Profanisaurus in Viz. A Scousers Library: The Job Centre. A Scousers Cashpoint: A Fruit Machine.

I was raised on Fullers myself, but on the old specials, the products of Scottish & Newcastle breweries would be the tipple of choice, usually either McEwans or Tartan.

I was thinking of local pubs, initially, only found S & N pubs up west. McEwans and Tartan were great, and I loved a bottle of Newcastle Brown or twelve. I didn't discover Fuller's pubs till a bit later, again, none in my local area. It was a while before I developed a taste for real ale and took advantage of the local Young's pubs. I'm developing quite a thirst for some reason...

This is where I resist the urge to misread "S & N up west".... now I've got that out of the way, I've never knowingly set foot in a Scottish & Newcastle brewery, except maybe up in the North East, in which case I didn't notice the brewery.

Fullers were, still are for all I know, based in Chiswick so had pubs all over West London. Fullers ESB (Extra Special Bitter) was at one time the strongest draught beer you could buy.

I also developed an early taste for the black stuff, helped no end by the fact that my father worked as a mechaniic for Guinness in Park Royal, He'd bring home crates of sample bottles, known as "tasters", along wth the occasional bottles of Harp and Dry Blackthorn, both of which were owned by Guinness at the time.

light and bitter when I started going to Chels, in the Lord Palmerston. Basically as you got about a pint and a bit for the same price.

Then Hofmeister, and various other dodgy lagers.

Was only 16 or 17 when started going to the pub before games, turned up half cut at quite a few in the late 70s.

California Wine was a funny drink a load of us got stuck into one time. It was about the forth round of the cup against Everton, met a few Liverpool fans who knew a few of ours, next thing we've gone from Arkles to pub crawl of backstreet/ mostly dodgy local boozers. Absolutely everyone was on this California Wine for some reason- the locals probably worked out it was the cheapest way getting rat arsed, so we did the same. When in Rome etc. ps the locals we were all sporting the latest fashion. These funny ankle bracelets provided by the probation board were all the rage!

Rotten bleeding drink, but a memorable afternoon. Ps off to the pub to roar on the mighty, mighty blues

Drank a fair few pints of Fuller's in my time, that ESB was definitely falling over water! Loved Dry Blackthorn, used to drink so much I'd sometimes wake up next morning with orange lips, and I'd get stuck into the black stuff when I was in the mood.

Speaking of dodgy lagers, does anyone remember Saxon, sold in Young's pubs many years ago? Absolute piss it was, no wonder their bitter's were so popular! A lIght & bitter was 13p when I started drinking in 1971/72, hardly ever see anyone drink it now.

I was also at the game in York. If I remember rightly it was freezing cold with snow flurries and there was a worry that the game would be called off. I don't remember much about the game itself but do remember drinking in a pub owned by an ex Chelsea player, for the life of me I can't remember his name, perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Do you remember the kung fu kicker at the Palace game? If I'm correct it was a guy called Arthur Peploe from Basingstoke who was into martial arts and a bit loopy. The kick failed, he missed his target and got tangled up in a crash barrier! Sad to say Arthur passed away about five years ago, he was the same age as me.

Arthur was my Brother and indeed he was at the Crystal

I can't remember much about the York game, was probably drinking all day (again).

I certainly remember the kung-fu kicker at the Palace game, that was a mad day. I always thought he was a bouncer who worked at Tiffany's in Wimbledon, who knows? Do you remember before the game the DJ put a record by Slik on, "Forever And Ever"? For some reason I've never understood, all us Chelsea lads in the North Stand joined in singing it before steaming into the Palace yet again. Also, Malcolm Allison came over to us before the game in his fedora, waving to everyone in the North Stand end in the delusional belief that it was full of Palace fans. He got a hell of a shock when we all gave him dogs abuse, and battered his beloved Palace fans right in front of him. That was one of the best days rucking I ever enjoyed at the Bridge!

Arthur was my Brother and indeed he was at the Crystal Palace game. He had stopped going to matches for a while and the punch ups and pitch invasions went quiet. Then he went to the Palace game and it all erupted again. Coincidence?  He loved Karate and gained his black belt.

Fullers is still growing strong. Have had a few pints of ESB over the years. Has a real kick to it. I've suffered the next day. Fullers has just taken over the Harp pub near Trafalgar Square - one of the finest pubs in London and not far from where I work. Often go in there for a pint or two after work.

Good to know that such a significant part of my history is still going strong.

And ESB is of course the perfect answer to any Northern muppet twatting on about weak Southern booze. The origins of this particular bit of bulsh*t lie with the kind of Northerner/tourist that gets sucked into the near-beer rip off joints around Soho and the like.

I used to drink ESB downstairs in the Clarendon at Hammersmith Broadway at the punk gigs.  I was told the stuff they sold there was slightly out of date and they got it cheap from Fullers down the road.  It's still one of my favourite's but the choice of beers in the supermarkets these days is so huge I usually end up buying something I haven't tried before.

I never had any trouble getting served in boozers but a few of my mates looked young. So when we were 16 if there was five of us we'd order a couple of light and lagers in the round to give the impression we were seasoned drinkers. As you get older you drink stuff you'd never touch when your young, bitter, guinness etc. Mind you i've still not drank cider since i was 17 after getting paralytic and having the mother of all hangovers that took about a week to get over.

Whenever i drank at away games id always try to get Newcastle brown ale or light n bitter......................NBA always made me feel uuuuurrrghh during and after a match.......i never learned tho

When I exceedingly under age I used to get served with a plastic cup of Brown Ale, sometimes light ale in the Shed Tea bar. Sometimes got asked my age but always got served this match going treat. Think it was a Watneys bottled product, poured by the ladies into the cups?

While doing my quick visit here i must relate another short story.........With the fellows i was with...Steve ballard and Scouse.( an Evertonian) id say this story is from around 74 - 76 .......ish.......Ive mentioned an inspector in the past who i said reminded me of a paedo.....OK...so ill grow up a bit and say he looked EXACTLY like a cartoon character..A typical cartoon cop....Lankey..Skinny...Beady eyes that were close together and the moustache..As soon as i would unfortunately make eye contact with him i knew my minutes at the match were running low...As well as more hair disappearing from my scalp as he ejected me , mostly for sweet FA........Anyway this story starts with the three of us getting in early for a chelsea Brum match at the Bridge....We stood early in the middle back of the shed......I saw him look my way....The three of us decided to go to the T BAR for a burger each.....We stood near the rail that you could look down the stairs at....Next thing a few Brum who were in the NS sang a song.....B I R MIN GHAM    CITYYYY     BIRMINGHAM  CITY EFF CEEE.....It was early so no one gave a sh*t.......Next thing...INSPECTOR and some ordinary mushrooms came from the back of us and INSP said the words....NICK EM AND PUT THEM DOWN TO ME.......In mid eat we were being slung out of the ground.....Were my eating habits that bad....We d done nothing wrong.....We did struggle and argue a bit but to no avail....(and yes, i did lose more hair)........We were charged FFS with threatening behaviour........I swear on this occasion we d  done nothing........Anyway he said his bit...How when Brum sang their song , we started shouting and swearing and made moves to go down to the pitch to poss run across to the poor brum fans.......We told the story as it really was...........WE WERE FOUND NOT GUILTY...This did surprise me as he was an inspector......His long strides from court   ( in anger ? ) made us laugh....We still had to py costs of 11 pounds....Dont know why if we were found NG.......Kept low profile for a loooooonnngggg time at the Bridge after that........Bilko was a tosser toooo

Sad thing is Mike, i would estimate that from 1970-2000, there must have been tens of thousands of fans over the country who were nicked on false pretences, and found guilty and even jailed because of lying Rozzers?.
