Everything about that millwall picture seems like something from a history book. Fighting, no seats, no women,no oldies, no tourists. Just young lads at the match. Great days!

No scarves either.

I'm not sure if the question of scarves is worth its own topic, but there's a definite history to be told.

 

Like most people, I very rarely wore a scarf in those days, the exception being when I was hitchhiking, then I'd sometimes wear a woollen scarf for warmth or to help my chances of getting a lift. Of course there was always the chance you'd end up gettng a kicking, but that was the chance you took. And then there was the odd occasion I'd wear a scarf for a windup. Red white and green being favourite because oppo fans weren't always sure who I was.

 

Go back a few years, and a lot of us wore scarves, silk scarves either around your neck, with a crombie for instance, or tied to your wrist. In those days it was far easier to spot who was who, which is of course the reason why scarves went out of fashion. Not that it was as staightforward as that. There was a time when you'd wear a scarf to the game, then shove it in your pocket for strategic reasons when required. Harry jackets were great for hiding scarves because of the flap pockets,.

 

Before scarves you had rattles and rosettes, before my time strictly speaking, but I did wear an England rosette, and I had a rattle, bought for me by my old man when I was about 10 or 12, when we used to go to the schoolboys internationals at Wembley.

Brother bought me an air horn when I was 12 (1980) smuggled it in home an away. Felt really good using it on the benches and away as I got older. great for getting everyone to Chant together. Nothing better than using it on arrival at mainline st coming off the train, the noise of our supporters was fantastic. Amazed how people would speak up if old bill would try to take it off me at the turnstiles. Happy days!

Another good day got revenge for the game at the Den there was a bit of a standoff outside the Shed on the railway bridge one of their faces Merrick clapped his hands shouting "come on then boys it's Christmas" the old Bill got in between us

For once we got organised and got in the Shed early and awaited the expected assault from Millwall they were spotted by the tea bar making their way through the crowd we split in two got behind them then steamed in sheer weight of numbers forced them onto the greyhound track I remember one of them turned to face us and pulled a knife in his panic he dropped it a Chelsea fan handed it back to him but missed his hand and stuck it in his leg that was enough for them and under police escort went up the North Stand this picture was taken about that exact moment as I was just behind to the right (left in picture) of B near the old Bill.

After the game went to the Red House a pub just off the Kings Road we were in one bar when a fan came running into the other bar dived head first accords the counter into breathless saying Milwall are chasing them down the road we all piled out the pub and without thinking just steamed in to our surprise they ran all the way back to the Kings Road and towards Sloane Square we gave up and went back to the Red House and carried on Drinking as usual the booze was more important

Wonderful story......

The problem in those days was getting it together.  We smashed Millwall out of the Shed, took Arsenal the next season on Boxing Day, got taken by West Ham a couple of days later and then gave Spurs a good hiding in the Shed the following year!

Was this also not the game when Butch Wilkins missed a sitter in front of the Shed? I might be wrong as the old memory is fading a bit.

If it's the site I'm thinking of, closed down now, I did ask the question on there as to why there was so few of them in the Shed that day, and was told that they were rumbled by OB trying to get in, must have been the accents and colours that gave them away..............err maybe not.

Ive seen this pic 100's of times but have only just noticed the fella right at the back stood on top of a barrier, looking like he's watching his troops going in to battle, love it.

Another thing I remember from the Millwall match.  When there was a decent away support in the North Stand, usually stood behind the goal all of a sudden the Chelsea spread about in that end used to all suddenly mob up just up the bank from the away fans and then pile into them throughout the match.   This day when it happened the Shed started singing the usual North Stand do your job only to find out they were all Millwall.  I doubt there were many North Standers there that day, everyone was in the Shed waiting for their appearance which happened a short time before kickoff.

I miss the old station

when we moved out the Ifield we started drinking in the white hart and used to love looking over the road and picking out any away brave souls who came out the station exit opposite. occasionally one or two would venture over for a beer as a badge of honour to tell their mates no doubt.I can remember a giant Geordie in his team shirt standing at the back bar drinking his pint without being bothered by anyone. also the night we beat Everton 4-1 in the league cup(rooney, rooney, time for bed!) and 2 young scallies thought it would be funny to climb on a table,again in the back bar, and start chanting their teams name.they didn't finish the first verse before being grabbed off the table and 'helped' out the back down the alley.

I bet that was a sore journey home.

The white hart was a good bar good atmosphere on match day before and after. Didn't they used to have a DJ on Friday nights
