Any of you Blues that ever shop in Basildon.....Oppo the old Townhouse pub and the beginning of market square there is a stall ( the first one you see) that is run by a chap who is an old shedboy from late 60s and knows faces from the past....Give him a visit if youre in that neck of the woods....You will know him, and he may know you..I recognised his boat immediately a few months back but only spoke to him in depth yesterday

Mike, I know a few Chelsea fans who live in that part of the world. When I see them at the game against West Ham, will ask if they know the stall.

What a good day out that was

just asking you other regular members on here, my first season 77/78 going to the bridge 9/10 years of age and then away 1982. How big was our away support outside London around 78 and before? I know it was a London derby but Spuds on the TV 78/79 looked impressive numbers.

Remember it well, coming off the 1st special at Oxford Road by the cricket ground and local plod telling us that if we kept quiet they'd make sure we'd be ok, cue immediate chorus of Maybe it's because I'm Londoner. Then as we got level with the boozer near the ground, Trafford Arms I think, they came from all directions. Cue Mr H and Mr B telling everyone to stick together, they came close but none wanted to get too close. Inside the ground and a little mob of Chelsea scattering the Stretford End, as Bluebeard will confirm. Great win, then little mobs of them down every side street on the way back to the station, surprisingly easy day out and I seem to remember hearing that we were the first London team to take numbers that big to OT, great day out.

Before we got relegated in 74/75 north of the midlands we hardly took anybody except for big cup games eg remember going to Liverpool 1975 hardly anyone on special two buses met us at Lime St everyone was singing on bus by the time we got to Anfield you could have heard a pin drop we were dropped off outside the main stand no police it was every man for themselves.

By 77/78 back in the first division 1-2000  couple of specials which had a police escort but a 100/150 of us used to go by Inter City using Persil Tickets this was our main firm in them days we was tight and grown up together and had learned from the Millwall experience

Right about the low numbers in the early 70s mate, I remember going on the special to Carlisle in 74, somebody walked through and did a headcount, somewhere around 120 total. I thought things started to pick up numbers wise a little earlier than 77 though and would argue the toss that our first year in the second division saw us taking some big numbers to Sunderland, Blackpool, Bolton and York in the cup.
