Right about the low numbers in the early 70s mate, I remember going on the special to Carlisle in 74, somebody walked through and did a headcount, somewhere around 120 total. I thought things started to pick up numbers wise a little earlier than 77 though and would argue the toss that our first year in the second division saw us taking some big numbers to Sunderland, Blackpool, Bolton and York in the cup.

You're right mate being relegated at the end of 74/75 seemed to stir up the interest Sunderland away as first game (another blinding day) saw people going who if it had been the previous season wouldn't have bothered them two seasons down in the second our away numbers shot up

I remember my girl chelsea being weeks old and sending a tenner in to save the Bridge  fund...She was put into the programme with her story and her pic rolled up in a baby blanket....Ill give her that prog when i go to the shed end in the sky

I admit to really liking our Le Coq Sportif kit of the early 1980s.

That North Stand looks bloody unsafe. 

Just checked, the crowd for Chelsea v West Brom on 13th October 1951  s given as 34,917,  we lost 3-1.

 

The Bridge looks packed from the  photo above...

 

The next day we played a friendly match against Racing Club de Paris , in Paris and won 2-1.

 

In front of 13,000 spectators.

Flasher, leaving match of the days finest hansen and lawrenson in his wake!!! A few years later he was being chased on the pitch by a fan, when wearing a Sunderland shirt!!
