His pace had gone when he came here, but find it hard to remember a striker with so much clever movement as Luca, when you watched him you would think, I bet he was a player 10 years ago!

I remember when he came on towards the end of the 1997 cup final and the cheer was one of the loudest that day. He had a good scoring chance as well.

Hard to believe now, but Rangers were offering Luca better wages than us and I think he was on the verge of signing for them.

We came in with an offer, he talked to the club agreed terms then had to tell Rangers chairman David Murray he was signing for us.

@erskblue Thanks, I had forgotten about Rangers trying to sign Luca.

Looking back at that 1962/63 season. We had an average home attendance of 28,973 and over the 46 competitive games we played 1,145,606 watched us.

Not bad for a Division 2 side. We gained promotion in second place

Bobby Tambling was the top scorer with 37 goals. Next came Barry Bridges with 17.

An interesting time when Vialli came here, unlike most footballers he was from a wealthy background and was known by some in Italy as being Lucky Luca and what happened when he became manager we lifted the League Cup and Cup Winners Cup, the best silverware I think since the seventies. Talking about luck perhaps that goal he scored against Tromso in the snow when we were losing with the ricochets off the legs of defenders illustrates the point.

I loved the reception he got by the shed and we got as high as third in the league 98-99 season. Perhaps a good point to remember the next time we hear of those plastic fans comments aimed at us.
