Yes, I vaguely remember Hughes lunging into the tackle then, when Ossie was on his arse holding his leg, standing over him and sneering. Osgood was head and shoulders above any centre forward then but Ramsey would only select him four times for England. Two reasons for that: 1) He didn't like flair players 2) He hated Chelsea even more when, as a player, Stan Willemse put him on to the dog track at Stamford Bridge, after he'd hauled down Frank Blunstone for the umpteenth time

Been re-reading Ossies biography and various obituarys; apparently he put on two stone while he was out with his broken leg, and never shed it all.

Theres a bit of consensus that if he really dedicated himself he could have been a world beater. Playing football wasn't the be all and end all and he enjoyed his social life, and wasn't much of a trainer. ( Alf Ramsey disapproved of his playboy lifestyle)

Mick Channon reckoned in terms of natural ability him and Besty we're out on their own.

Brighton 83 another Chelsea here Chelsea there day. I was on the train where that poor bloke got hit by a train passing in the opposite direction. When we got off after a long delay someone said what happened we just thought they were taking the piss. It was only when I joined this forum nearly 35 years later did I find out it was true and I have to say it chilled me a little bit RIP mate.

In some ways , that photo above, could sum up conditions for football supporters in the 1980s.

Not if it was QPR's away support they could have pitched up tents in all the empty spaces.

Great times in packed terraces. Knees up mother brown!

When a goal was scored or a near miss.

i remember if I didn’t get seats away in the 80s everyone would crouch down doing one man went to mow and leap up at 10!!!

Grounds and facilities may have improved by a long way now a days,  but scenes like that picture makes you pleased that you experienced that day and age, football, fashion, and music.

Remember that at Pompey away in rumbelows cup 1990, we made the stand crack with a thunderous mo meadow in the seats, and half time uncle ken had to come up and encourage us to go on terrace for safety reasons. Needless to say everyone sat down on terrace and did mo meadow, to cap it all we scored 3 in last 10 mins to win 3-2.

Open air urinals in some grounds.

Yeah football spectator 'faciliities' in the 1980s...

I remember the 'catering outlet' at one ground in Scotland , it was a small garden shed selling pie and Bovril.

I have always hated the taste of both pie and Bovril !

Here you go football at The Bridge, early 1980 v Newcastle Utd.

When I see Walker in that sort of form, I wonder why he wasn't considered good enough to play for England.

The way John Jackson was playing, I think we did well to nick a point!

Funny it reminded me a bit of our game against them this season. We were clearly the better team but for variuos reasons the scoreline didnt reflect that. Funny club for us Palace we very rarely give them a right old thrashing, they tend to raise their game a bit against Chelsea. Maybe because their fans are quite up for it where as we cant really get worked up about them.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I remember beating Palace 5-1 and 4-0 or 4-1 in a very short space of time in the League and the Cup, 1970 I think.

I started watching iin 75 so missed those games. The only thrashing I can think of was a 6-2 during the Vialli years and a 4 1 in one of the title seasons under Mourinho. But even with those they either scored first or equalised so it felt like a harder game.

Unfortunately he wasnt like that often enough. Same with Fillery who was also very good in the Newcastle game.

The team of the 80s!

There was a period late 70s, early 80's when we were struggling and they were doing well by their standards. A few Palace fans I went to school with reckoned they were a bigger club than us at the time.

I always thought the atmosphere over there was pathetic- nowadays they do make a bit of noise but not then.

They played us in George Grahams testimonial-  May 1980- we took the Holmesdale- afterwards a load of the boys went onto the Iranian Embassy and scattered the people protesting outside. ( there's film of this somewhere in the Rock n Roll years)

Re George Graham, Ive never been able to work out why they granted him a testimonial given he didn't play for them for very long.
