A bit different. R.I.P. Raquel Welch. Ossie looks happy. Love Brian Moore's comment at the end that Jimmy Hill hasn't been seen in the studio. Brian Moore was a great commentator.  Modern day commentators could learn lessons from him.

Jimmy Greaves collides with Birmingham City goalkeeper, Gil Merrick in the 4th minute at Stamford Bridge on 31st August 1957. Merrick leaves the field injured but Greaves continues and scored twice in Chelsea’s 5-1 victory.  Bygone Chelsea on Twitter.
Oh to have a 5-1 victory again.

I think I've got a newspaper report from an old scrapbook I found in a second hand shop about this game. I'll dig it out

I'll try and get a decent photo.

From the Sunday Pictorial.

Merrick goes off with concussion and stitches in his jaw after collision with 17 yo Greaves. Left half Neal goes in goal who then had a collision with Greaves, but unhurt.

Then outside right Astall takes over in goal.

For a 17yo Jimmy put himself about didn't he ? !!!😁😁😁

John Hollins, who I think sometimes doesnt get the recognition he deserves, also made his debut at 17.

Rattled up 714 Ist Division appearances. Most ever for an outfield player, second only to Shilton between the sticks.

500 odd appearances for us, very weirdly none as substitute.

Could really smash a penalty

Very basic dugout village hall chairs en all compared with nowadays.

A lot of dugout used to be sunken- Christ's knows how they could see the play- probably why managers sometimes watched the game from the Directors box, ala Big Mal with his fedora and fur coat when Palace bumped us out the Cup in 76.

As you say, dugouts are very different from nowadays. Does baffle me why managers stand at pitch level. They must get a better view from up in stands. Watching top level rugby, cricket and other sports the managers sit further up and have a better view and pass messages onto assistants at pitch level.

And Venables debut just a week after his 17th birthday.

Amazing considering how brutal the game was back then , but those youngsters stood up to it just fine

The Doc watched from that shed like construction on top of the old East stand .

Managers are now expected to provide entertainment these days.

Totally unnecessary.Look at Carlo at Anfield last night ! What a boss !

Have seen pictures and videos of the Doc in the shed on the old East Stand. A good place to see the game. It's comical watching some of the managers. Agree about Carlo. A great manager. Daft when he was sacked by Chelsea.

Can’t believe they got rid of the dugouts that were put in when the east stand was finished.
