Picked up Assassins Creed Syndicate just after Christmas as I needed something new to play and have been put off of Just Cause due to the performance issues.

Not played an Assassins Creed game for a few years because I felt the franchise had stagnated and was churning out poor copies of earlier releases and introducing poor additions to the game like the Brotherhood.

Anyway, pleasantly surprised how good it is, London looks amazing. The combat is still too simplistic for my tastes but there's plenty to do and decent variety in the missions and objectives.

I only paid £20 for it from Amazon, would recommend it to others who might have been on the fence about it.

For a score it's definitely worth it, exploring London and climbing over Big Ben and St Paul's has been a fairly unique experience.

The story is pretty naff still but dropping off a zip line and piercing someone through the head with your hidden blade is as satisfying as ever.

I've barely touched the main quest line in a week of playing it and just had fun with the open world side quests.

Yeah I've long been a proponent of having an AC game set in the Victorian era and, though it's definitely not without its flaws, I'm really glad they finally pulled it off.

 

Have you gotten the Jack the Ripper DLC out of interest, FC?

I haven't no, I'm intending to play through it, get the platinum trophy for it and then trade it in.

I rarely buy DLC because as a rule it normally isn't very good value for money.

The best DLC is normally for RPG open world games like Fallout, Witcher and Dark Souls.

More closed off narrative games like Assassins Creed or Arkham Knight it's generally too short.

Bought Alpha Protocol on Steam yesterday quite cheap. I remember having fun with it when it first came out, now I'm looking forward to a replay.

I've got that. Done a few hours on it, but the shooting mechanics annoyed me, and the hacking mini game is seriously the worst mini game I've ever played in any game...ever.

Yeah, the gameplay mechanics are shaky, there are bugs and the AI is really shaky, but the general game design, the story, the consequences of your actions and the timed conversations are great. On high levels you can sneak around in near invisibility which is fun. If you have problems with the shooting then try a shotgun/close combat character, no problems there. The hacking game... yeah... that was probably the worst part. But there's a level 1 skill that let's you use EMP granedas to bypass them.

just finished mgsv, great story as usual, love the ending, filled a lot of plot holes and answered a lot of questions in the series

very sad this is the last mgs, mgs3 still the best one imo, if only konami didn't rush kojima and the fact that they scrapped a number of missions and the friggin final mission because they don't want to delay the game, bunch of moneygrabbing aholes game companies these days

The second chapter of MGSV was so disapointing. Repeated missions. Lazy by Konami.

yep chapter 2 was unfinished because the whole hideo konami dispute and then konami decide to just put repeated missions with some handicap, there's supposed to be chapter 3 too but it got canned also

 

glad kojima got his own independent studio now and working on a new ip, the mgs series itself need to be laid rest but i have a bad feeling now with kojima gone konami will "assasin creed" it milking the franchise to death

Has anyone had much luck with ps4 remote play through an android device? I just set it up tonight on my s5, but need to get a cable to connect my ds4 to really give it a proper test.

I'm hoping input lag isnt a game changer, as it could be the solution to gaming while the wife hogs the tv!

I've done remote play through my PS Vita and it worked well enough.

Has anyone tried playing Brothers: A tale of two sons?

Got it cheap during the Steam Winter Sale and had a great time playing it.

One of the best 2 dollars I've ever spent so far.

I'm really enjoying Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. Unity was awful, it's the first AC game I didn't finish.

 

Syndicate however, despite being a typical AC game, is brilliant. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it's set in London and I "know my way around", but I'm finding the combat and stealth mechanics much better this time around.

 

And the grappling gun is great fun to use. Having gang wars to fight for turf in the various boroughs is cool too, walking towards the opposing gang with your own thugs right behind you before a huge bloody knife-fight. The main characters, Jacob and Evie are very likeable too.

 

The AC series has attracted a lot of criticism as of late but I think they have turned it around with Syndicate. I am well aware that AC has little love on these forums though...

They've "dumbed it down" again for Syndicate, be warned!

I'm dying to get Just Cause 3. Might trade in Fallout 4 for it, since I just can't get into that game. 

That's a shame they've dumbed it down. Most AC games you can take on about 15 people and win which is too unrealistic and too easy.

Just Cause is brilliant and real fun. Not a world beater but excellent producing so much carnage.

Sleeping dogs

I had to work pretty much all through Christmas and up until New Year's Eve and I knew some of those work days would be quiet days at the office (to say the least), so I needed something to pass the time. Since Room Three wasn't out yet, I looked at the end of year sale at Play Store and noticed Castle of Illusion was something like -90% discount, so I figured a nice little platformer could be fun way to pass the time, even if it's just on my phone. Well, guess what? It looks nice, but it's got some of the worst controls I've ever seen. The android ports of the first two Sonic the Hedgehog games are proof that you can do a platformer with touch screen controls and make it work. It's so frustrating because it almost seems like the difficulty comes mostly from the way the bad controls hinder the accuracy of your jumps and movement. I'm glad I paid under an Euro for it.

Fallout 4 is £27 on Amazon now. 

A few years ago I used to get endless hours of fun out of good co-op games like Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) and Team Fortress 2, but nothing nowadays seems to be very interesting. Killing Floor 2 might be decent, bbut they only have 1 game mode at the moment, so not enough to keep me interested. Other than that, it's all so rubbish. I spend ages browsing Steam, but nothing sounds worth buying.
