Booing the National anthem

Featured Replies

I believe it all goes back to Hillsborough. Liverpool fans apparently wanted the FA to substitute You'll Never Walk Alone for the National Anthem at the 1989 FA Cup Final. The FA refused, to which Liverpool fans responded by singing You'll Never Walk Alone while the National Anthem was playing. This has since developed into a tradition. The booing is, I believe, a more recent development.

My mate at the game reckons the booing came from Chelsea fans who were booing the dippers for singing that sh*te over the anthem.

Nope, it was the LFC support who roundly booed the National Anthem. There were some boos afterwards from our end in reaction to that but during the song it all came from their fans.

As someone has said - if you ask them the reason why they will tell you ' we are scouse, not English '.

Honestly.

Anyway, i dont think we should get too precious about this.

Ah right, he did say they were booing them but I didnt know they had booed the anthem as well as sang over it.

scouse not english, what a bunch of w**kers. i bet they dont mind taken the english tax payers money on giro day.then again most of the bin dippers fans are from ireland and norway.

Ahem! There are also some lovely people from Ireland and Norway!

If they are not British can we stop paying their benefits out of the public purse. That would get us out of recession in an instant.

Here here.

"LFC fans have always swerved the establishment, it's part of the culture of the city not just the club, that's why you don't see Union Jacks at European nights the way you do with chelsea or spurs or even the mancs. Even in the 80s my uncle always supported Scotland in international matches purely becaus Dalglish played for them. Liverpool has never been an 'English' club. This is not a new thing."

This seems to be their explanation. This post was soon followed by:

"Not my f**king national anthem. I'd have gone a step further and wiped my arse with a union jack and pissed on a stamp. f**king hate this country and everyone in it."

Sorry to those who get annoyed when stuff from other fans gets posted on here but I personally find it interesting to see what goes through opposition fans' heads.

Is it not time we airlifted the whole of Liverpool onto a small, remote island and just left them to it? They'll all have killed each other within a week or so anyway, good riddance I say.

+1

What is worrying me also is that with all the hatred thrown at Liverpool fans lately there may be an ebbing to the natural hatred of tottenham hotspur.........Lets hope THIS tradition never dies
