Just interested in outsiders opinions on Roy Keans comments regarding Irelands recent performances .

Being Irish i cant help but agree with a lot of what hes had to say . Putting rivalrys aside on Mr Keane [ former Man Utd ] i generally enjoy his column on a sunday and today he has had a right go at the players for two awful displays .

As for his comments on the fans , it was taken out of context , he wasnt slagging them off , merley a case of trying to get them to set standards higher .

Love to hear your views .

I wrote about what Keane said on Itv at the time and totally agreed with him...find it rather patronising, for any team, when the fans still 'singing' is seen as some consolation when they have just been stuffed...sure support like that is great, but England have also had great support at major tournaments over the years and that hasn't disguised the fact that they have been sh*t...

All keane said on the night is he believes ireland fans should expect more from their side than just going for a sing-song and the craic while watching their side get stuffed...I think he's right...Greece aren't exactly gifted individually, but with a bit of organisation managed to get to the quarter finals...of course ireland had a much tougher group, but they should have put up much more of a fight so as to at least deserve the backing they were getting in the stands

Well said Brit , i find it embarassing to be regarded as a nation of drinkers who have a party regardless if we win or lose , its at the stage where were not allowed slag off or critisise the Rep of ireland when they play poor , and dont dare say a bad word about robbie keane or Shay Given or your a traitor .

It was always unlikely that Ireland were going to get out of the group they were in so I would imagine most supporters went there more in hope than expectation!

That said I thought that both of the Ireland games the performances have been poor. To concede early goals in both halves of both games, shows a lack of focus from the players!

I think they can count themselves lucky to have such great support! If that was England the booing would have been ringing out around the nation!

Roy is obviously a very polarising figure. I've always admired him as a footballer, he gave it out and expected it in return. He doesn't pull his punches now which makes him refreshing compared to some of the other cliched crap from most pundits.

He is spot on same as he was when Henry scored. I expect him to be vilified in the short run but there will probably be a realisation that he is right eventually.

The only thing that confuses me is this: were people expecting anything different? Ireland have the least talented roster in the tournament and they were drawn up with Spain, Italy and Croatia. It seemed a foregone conclusion they were going out. To me, the mere fact that they qualified is an accomplishment and they should worry about trying to build for the future.

Roy Keane wants Ireland to be a tad more competitve & to that end,I think he wants the fans to expect more from the team.

The same in many ways when Ted Drake did away with the Pensioners tag associated with Chelsea back in the fifties,he just wanted a more 'proffesional' & winning attitude from players (& the fans!).

However,it does grate when an old pro has a dig from the safety of the press. It would suit Roy much better to show he's got the right ideas & the minerals to carry them out and put himself up to replace Tapatoni after the Euros.

A case of 'put-up' or 'shut-up' I feel.

I like his bluntness, and his total intolerance of anything he regards as 'nonsense' (like the video of Hart and Ox playing head-tennis shown the other night). Also I suspect Chiles is terrified of him, which only makes me like him more.

I find keane to be a bitter aesehole. I didn't hear his comments the other night but my dad was telling me yesterday about them. It came across to me that if it had been someone like ray houghton that made them they'd have been fair. But from a man who played in an Ireland team made up of top draw pemiership/1st div players, and who walked out on them days before a major tournament (whatever the reasons), a man that has gone on to consistently fail as a manager, it seems a.bit hypocritical.

He's a prize a tosser. And that is based on teh obnioxiuse dick head way he sits in his chair and speaks like it's gosspel.

Ireland where never getting out of tha group. the match against spain to put in to context would be like barcelona v charlton. He was a thug when he played and should have been banned for life and he needs a slap round the face now

Maybe i missed something here , hes employed as a pundit , would they prefer him to be all nice and say exactly what Irish fans want to hear ?

I dont find him obnoxious at all, hes no worse than Dunphy on RTE , Im fed up with the Irish attitude of celebrating a failure , id prefer if the Irish fans showed more disappointment at losing rather than ''Ah sure f**k it , we'll all get pissed anyway '' and thats exactly what Keane was pissed off about and i completely agree with him. Its got to the stage over here where if you say anything negative about the team or any players your classed as a national traitor . I agree that were probably the poorest side in the tournament ,it was a bonus getting there in the first place but shocking tactics , poor team selection and stubborness on the managers part has to be questioned , also the lack of committment by certain players against Croatia is an issue too .

A poll on RTE tv last night showed 83% agreed with Roy Keanes comments , as for the fans , when they went out of their way to boo the England team arriving at their hotel 2 weeks ago i just lost interest in them .

Agreed clubhappy.

Nothing wrong with a bloke who is relentlessly competitive. I've always thought he was similar to our own Dennis Wise, another person who some would consider controversial, but I would never have traded for Shearer or Cantona or Henry.

This.

IMO, Roy Mental is not quite the full quid. He has always been a bit "special needs". Should have done jail time after his pre-planned assault that finished Inge Haaland's career.

Thing is, pundit or not, it's his opinion, take it or leave it.

In the games I've watched (not just the Irish) the only conclusion I've come to is most of the players are carrying injuries or are shagged

I remember reading Roy Keane's book. The reason he disliked the Irish set up was because of how unprofessional it was and that there was no drive to win. It was a complete culture shock switching from Man Utd to the Ireland set up. He can obviously see that zero has changed in 10 years. He wants to see them do well and is frustrated, and being the character he is, he isn't going to hold back!

I enjoy the bluntness also.

Its refreshing to see someone be so brutally honest and blunt. He certainly has a bitter streak to him, but he will always tell it how it is, no sugar coating.

If he was at Chelsea he would be a hero. He was Man Utd's John Terry
