What happens after JT?

Just wanted to see some of your thoughts on who should captain Chelsea after JT retires in a few years time? At the moment I'm at a loss for candidates other than Cahill because the likes of Lampard, Cech, Cole, Ivan etc will have already or will retire pretty soon after the time Terry decides to retire.

Do you reckon the captaincy should be passed on to one of the old guard for a year or two every few years or given to a younger player so he can establish a captaincy for a sustained period like when JT was handed the armband permanently back in 03-04 by Ranieri?

Any youth players suggesting they might have leadership qualities?

It all depends on how long JT will play and what players will arrive before he quits. But out of the players we have I'd say maybe Ivan, Cahill or Cech.

When it comes to the armband I am thinking Luiz or Cahill. They seem to have a leg up after how they played in the CL final. Luiz is an emotional leader for the team right now. Cahill has a little JT in him.

When it comes to Youth players with leadership qualities, Chalobah is a true born leader. He has captained many sides from the reserves to the youth national teams. He probably should be captain at some point.

Well Terry has 2 or 3 more years at the top imo so by that time we could have moved on some of our players and brought others in.

Cech could play well into his late 30's as many keepers do these days and he has done mroe than enough to warrant the armband if he is still here by the time JT calls it a day.

Nothing to worry about at the minute though as JT will not be finished for a while yet.

I'd really love to see Bertrand make a bigger impact this season and maybe earn the armband. It'd be fantastic to see the captaincy handed from one academy player to another when the time comes. That is, of course, if he forces his way into the first team regular and shows the qualities needed to be a captain.

what does it matter? armband or not, vocal and influential players will be exactly that whatever happens.

when jt goes this is what we will need:

leaders. plural.

look at the leaders we have had since jose has been here:

jt, cech, lamps, ballack, maka, drogba etc.

players that unite and inspire the squad. the ones that communicate on and off the pitch.

when jt goes lamps will have already left. I don't see how cahill or ivanovic could realistically be ahead of cech. considering how long they have left, how closely they are tied to the club, how vocal they are, their influence in the squad...

I think people are conflating form (particularly in terms of grit and defensive quality) with leadership.

from the current squad it has to be petr in my view. it has to be.

When this horendous day becomes reality, we will be sad, and then we ll cope.The ongoing genesis, if you like, of any team , generally works out ok....Some of us could never imagine our team without ossie cooke bonetti etc...but after a while one finds new heroes and the old heroes , while always remembered and loved, become just wonderfull memories...We will talk of jt when we are old, but certainly will worship many players that take his place...although i must add, it will take a very special man to get the sort of adulation jt gets..i believe jt must never leave this club..when playing is finished he must have a high profile job with us into his old age when guys like me will be well gone but young ones will have the knowledge of him...

I think that the three current candidates are Ivan, Luiz and Cahill. I leave Cech out of that list because, although he has all the qualities in his personality, I too don't like keeper's as captain. I know there are good real life examples of this (Casillas, Buffon) but for me the captain needs to have a large influence across the pitch and keepers are restrained to the goal. They can't talk to the ref, settle disputes at the other end of the pitch, and they cannot lead the team as well as an outfield player can.

So (sadly) discounting Cech, my first choice would be Ivan. He has been here for ages (not required but more like a bonus), is highly respected, loud on the pitch and leads by example. Cahill reminds me so much of Terry, and Luiz is possibly, after JT, our most passionate player. I would be happy with any of them but I edge towards Ivan.

I see coaching badges on the horizon. I hope he gets treated better than Osgood did.
