Biggest team not to have won the European Cup?

Featured Replies

or Champions League.........whatever you choose to call it.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a thread for me to take the piss out of those clubs who've never won it, I'm not going to start ripping into other

fans just because we finally have it, although it is good ammunition when provoked, I remember how annoying it was, when Utd, Villa, LIverpool and Forest fans always

took the piss, so I'll not be harsh.

Arsenal, Everton perhaps?

Both have great histories, brilliant domestic honours, I think with Arsenal more so, they've been competing in the competition for a long time now, not

to mention reaching the final not so long ago.

How about Athletico Madrid, Rangers, who else can you think of?

I'd probably say Arsenal, maybe Roma.

Interesting question though. With us off of that list, I wonder who it could be. And I'm not saying that as a dig on any other team but it's just interesting to think about.

Valencia reached 2 finals and lost them both (1 on penalties).

Arsenal

Roma

Lyon

Monaco

Sporting Clube de Portugal (Sporting Lisbon)

Fiorentina (they reached a final on one of the first tournaments, then they had an amazing team during late 90's early 2000)

Kinda cool that the 3 big teams in holland (Ajax, psv, feyenoord) won the cup at least once each, man Dutch football used to be great.

Some of them are taking into account history and squads they've had in different times.

For all the domestic honours it has to be Arsenal. I'm not sure how many Serie A titles Roma have, pretty sure they won it within the first couple of years of this century but I couldn't quote a date.

Both clubs are from the capital of their country which also adds an extra dimension to it.

Can't believe Roma or Lyon have never won it.

"The Invincibles" of Arsenal were so good, I can't believe they didn't win it that year....

With players such as Brian Laudraup, Gazza, McCoist, Cooper then Rangers would be up there.

Roma also and Leeds were a strong shout too.

Chelsea however have won the big one!

Much as I hate to say it, Leeds were one of the best teams around in the late 60's/early 70's, yet they never won the European Cup.

Didnt Leeds get cheated out of a Euro trophy?

Rangers are one of the biggest clubs never to have won the European League/Champions League, but they were so unlucky in 1992/93, getting knocked out without losing a game. That season there were rounds one and two, which resulted in eight teams left to play in two groups of four, the winners of each group to play in the final in Munich.

Rangers' results that season: -

Champions League 1992/93

1st Round

Lyngby Home W 2-0 (Hateley, Huistra)

Lyngby Away W 1-0 (Durrant)

2nd Round

Leeds United Home W 2-1 (McCoist, Lukic og)

Leeds United Away W 2-1 (Hateley, McCoist)

Group Stage

Marseille Home D 2-2 (McSwegan, Hateley)

CSKA Moscow Away W 1-0 (Ferguson)

Brugge Away D 1-1 (Huistra)

Brugge Home W 2-1 (Durrant, Nisbet)

Marseille Away D 1-1 (Durrant)

CSKA Moscow Home D 0-0

Marseille won the group, finishing one point ahead of Rangers, and went on to beat AC Milan in the final.

I remember watching all the Gers games on TV from the 2nd round on, either full match or extended highlights, and still have them on DVD (transferred from video) - must dig them out again soon!

^^ And remember that was the year Marseille were implicated in that bribery and match fixing scandal. They were kicked out of Ligue 1 and banned for the next season's CL, but strangely they weren't stripped of their CL title. Sadly Rangers will probably never get that chance again.

The '75 European Cup final against Bayern is the one they always moan about. Leeds dominated the match but the ref did an Ovrebo, disallowing a Leeds goal for no apparent reason and waving away a blatant penalty. However said Leeds fans always conveniently forget how they got away with maiming two Bayern players early on.

Can't believe Roma or Lyon have never won it.

Great goal, great commentary .

Roma. Lyon. Arsenal. Valencia, Borussia monchengladbach - amazing team in the 70's and as well dynamo kyiv. It must be remembered that back in the day, it wasnt just about the big five leagues winning the european cup, it truly was won by teams from Romania and yugoslavia etc..
