Took the goal well last night and is once again on course for finishing as the leading scorer in knock-out competition.

I'd love for him to go into the new season continuing his current form, not playing outstanding but keeps chipping in with goals.

Most fans hoped for that last season too after the euros, we also thought that since he didn't have a main threat in Drogba he might do even better.

Sturridge was injured for large parts of the start of last season and it quickly became evident that he was off to Liverpool... I'm fairly sure he would have happily left in the summer but was made to wait until January.

Torres was literally playing every minute of every game which wasn't great and his form improved once Ba arrived.

I'm hoping that come the new season with at least 3 strikers on the books (which is how it should be, why we started last season with only 2 is lost on me) that we'll see an improvement in our forward line.

I don't expect Torres to be first choice but if he can pinch the odd goal like he did at the end of last season and he has done at the Confederations Cup then I'll be happy.

Sturridge wasn't injured for our first 14 matches in all competitions yet played a little under 180 minutes with most that time coming in a single match against United for the Capital One Cup. Saying that in some way Torres was excused due to playing too much while him throwing a strop at simply being substituted against QPR for example is disingenuous. It was fairly evident that he had been favorited due to non footballing reasons to play with our new look attacking midfield which included Hazard; Oscar; Moses. When it became clear he was simply not at the needed level and he was dropped for our match against Juve - Sturridge got injured and shortly after RdM was sacked and Rafa had but one option and was here mostly to see if we could get the best out of him.

Torres scored a good goal last night, hopefully this leads to Barca or some other club thinking he is worth that 20 million punt. Simply put we should not be paying such wages for a player who you don't expect to be first choice - and his wages will free us up to sign a World Class player in his or a different position. You could see the frustration last night as David Villa went for a shot instead of slotting him in for a second goal - you could even see the tension when the two playing against Tahiti. Torres is not the kind of player that will have a calming influence when used off the bench - as he has a distorted view of his own capabilities and I'm sure he believes he is good enough to be first choice and any other role would lead him to moaning yet again.

I'm just saying that I expect him to be here next season for one reason or the other (be it wanting to stay or lack of interest from other clubs).

I can't hold his wages against him, he was given the biggest contract in our clubs history and that's the fault of the board not Torres.

I'm not looking to get into a debate about Torres' Chelsea career to date, I was just saying that for the new season he looks to be playing ok at the moment and has been chipping in a few goals for club and country. For next season, if he can continue that goal scoring form it would be a positive for us in regards to attacking options.

I don’t know why he gets criticized because of the level of teams he scores against because it’s the same for everyone.

Did Silva and Mata get slaughtered for only bagging 1 goal against Tahiti and did Soldado get pelters for not scoring at all against Nigeria?

5 goals in 1 and a bit appearances isn’t that bad regardless, Hell Cavani has been dire compared to Torres so far but a majority would still all cream over a 63 million bid being put in for him.

It’s good for Chelsea that Torres is scoring goals because either we keep him and his form is decent going into next season or we sell him and get the best price we can.

Just out of interest what was this 'strop' he threw when he got substituted?

I don't know about criticism, it's just that you cannot account goals against Tahiti and draw any conclusions from that match - against Nigeria he scored a good goal after some good movement inside the box. Which is one of my main gripes about Torres, movement inside the box in a blue kit he doesn't make enough runs or is outside of the box too much while we get the ball down the flank. Cavani has not been good for Uruguay for at least 3-4 years, his National Team form has always been poor - I try not to read too much into that because of his performances in Europe and Serie A over the last few years which have been very good. Personally I'd prefer Lukaku be given a chance but that's up to Jose

You know typical Torres strop, storming down the tunnel after getting outplayed by Ryan Nelson of all people

Edited by Las7

RFC you have a point there. We know what Torres can do but have no idea if Cavani is any better in the prem and behind our magical trio. Ba completely dried up after he came and he scored for fun a Newcastle. I do 't care who scores the goals as long as they come...

No, I don't remember it, that is why I asked.

How do you define 'storming'? Did he walk fast and that constitues a 'strop' in your eyes?

He was clearly annoyed and did storm down the tunnel, whether it was due to being taken off or because he was frustrated during the match, only Torres can explain that.

I don't remember that in all honesty.

Was a night to forget in general though to be honest so will take your word for it.

Its because Torres doesn't score against good teams, that is why. It isn't held against Mata because of the performances he puts in (often even without scoring) against top team after top team. Until Torres consistently has good games against top teams (doesn't even have to score, just play decent) then the criticisms will stop. So no, its not the same for every body.

True he didn't score against Barcelona, Shaktar, Benfica.

Look I'm not saying he's a great striker or he will be a Chelsea hero next season all I was pointing out was he can only score against what he comes up against and so far he's been better at that than a few players such as Cavani so far in this tournament.

It's good for the club no matter what way you think of it.

Slate the guy all you want but for f**k sake a wee bit of credit when he does something good no matter how infrequent that might be?

Crazy thinking no doubt on my part. Maybe it's better to be a miserable bar steward 24/7....

I'm sure if Sturridge or Lukaku had done the same you would remember mclovin

Probably not mate- I simply don't remember it.

Let's be honest you get your panties in a right twist over everything Torres does so it is perfetly understandable that you stored it in your 'Torres hate w**k bank' to be used 6 months down the line- I would expect nothing less.

You probably also had a perfect view of it from your comfy seat up in the West Upper, lol.

Yep, I  make sure when I go to a game once a year(due to living 2500km away) I have a comfy sit with my family in the Terraces - on the other hand considering the drivel you had posted about certain players "attitude" when there was no actual proof and your convenient forgetfulness of Torres's attitude really paints you in good light.

So now you are accusing me of spouting 'drivel' but of course not quoting the supposed 'drivel' to back up your point- because that might actually have some credibility. Guess we will just have to take your word got it won't we.

Good stuff.

Someone on the forums sat down and did a spreadsheet of all Torres' goals last season, and highlighted the ones which could be said to have come against good opposition, obviously including the ones against Shakhtar and Benfica.

There weren't that many of them. In particular, in league play, Torres scored just two goals against the top 7 . . . which matches Mata's tally against each of Man U, Spurs, and Arsenal, and is less than Lukaku managed as a last-day sub against Man U. So people are looking at the level of the opposition because that's been a real issue for Torres.

Torres' goal tally for us last season was basically down to him being a genuine threat against Europa League-level opposition. Now, that's legitimately useful; we've got a trophy that says so. However, given that he has shown himself back to scoring against minor teams, sticking four past Tahiti says absolutely nothing new. It's nice that he had a good game, but there's nothing there that would be beyond 2013 Not Good Enough To Be Our Number One Striker But Useful As Cover Torres.

The Nigeria goal's more impressive, but really nothing's happened at the Confederations Cup to suggest that Torres is moving off the level he was at last year. Good enough to be second- or third- string striker, but if we can find someone to take his wages off our hands we'd be just as fine going into the season with Mystery Striker X, Lukaku, and Ba.

So now you are accusing me of spouting 'drivel' but of course not quoting the supposed 'drivel' to back up your point- because that might actually have some credibility. Guess we will just have to take your word got it won't we.

Yes, calling out where I sit on my one per year visit to SB isn't drivel

And yes I will not be happy as long as I see Torres as the first name on the team sheet without earning it, and players who are obviously far better than him despite their age being send on loan or sold to accomidate him.

I wasn't so much 'calling you out' as making a legitimate point that from where I sit I genuinely can't easily see if a player goes straight down the tunnel or not. Besides I am normally watching the game again by that point, strange as that may seem- no doubt u have you binoculars fixed on Torres all game, even when he isn't on the pitch.

But the 'drivel' of mine you were referring to was apparently about other players poor attitudes? I won't hold my breath for you to produce any quotes of mine on that front- don't worry we can change the subject...

As for Torres being first name on the team sheet- that's not really true is it. More often than not he has been second choice in the big games after Drogba & more recently Ba. He has probably started more games than he deserves for a combination of reasons including some poor decision making by the club as you touch on but he hasn't been 'first name on the team sheet' by any stretch of the imagination.

I just hope his good run of scoring for Spain in the CC doesn't convince Roman that he is suddenly the bee's knees again and he should lead our line next season.

I think it's best Torres moved on.

I'd have to disagree with that very much. Torres was starting almost every game for us even when we had Ba at our disposal. The Liverpool game was sandwiched between Fulham and Benfica, and you would have expected Rafa to rotate, but Torres started all three of those games, and played the full 90 in all of them. Also, the FA cup semi against City he came on with about half an hour to go. Whenever he started, he got the whole game more or less and Ba got about five minutes at the end. When Ba started he got hauled off after about an hour and Torres came on for the rest. I'd say Torres definitely got the lions' share of starts last season.

Torres didn't start 'almost every game for us'.

Of course he stared his fair share, he represented 50% of our striking options and in the Europa he was our only option hard though it is to believe so there was little choice.

Ba stated against United home (FA cup), United away (league), Swansea home, Man City (FA cup semi), Sunderland home, West Ham home, West Brom home, Newcastle away, Swansea away (league cup), Southampton home, Stoke away & Southampton away (FA cup). They both started against Everton which was the only time that happened so for every game listed above Torres was benched.

I don't agree with him getting picked for certain games, Ba should have been first pick as far as I'm concerned but the suggestion that Torres started 'almost every game' even when Ba was available is nonsense- it was pretty even, maybe too even but never the less it wasn't all Torres.
