Really? I didn't think so

Apart from

Jaime and Cersei scene where it's made to look like he's raping her. In the books, it's consensual. Just reeks of HBO trying to give more shock value. Thought that was distasteful

. Everything seems to be coming together now, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all pans out in the show. They've done a great job so far.

I don't watch it, but how are people always so shocked by things that happen? I thought it was a remake of the books? Surely anyone who's read them knows whats going on.,

Also, got bored of the book after 3 chapters.

Funny I think there are too many stories in this series/novel & the creators are having issues trying to tie it all together. Good to see that Ygritte is still alive & kicking though

I've been tempted to read the books. Can't be as tough to read as LOTR.

Gimli son of Gloin you must meet Aragorn son of Arathorn to find Isildur's Bane!

<3 pages of songs>

<characters wishing Tom Bombadil was here despite them only meeting him shortly once 500 pages ago>

<Another wall of text containing dozens of names and locations, in the middle of which an important new character gets introduced in a single sentence and another dies>

<2 pages of song>

Didn't think LOTR was 'tough'.

The Song of Ice and Fire series isn't really tough either. You just need to keep track of the characters. It actually flows reasonably well. Gotta be 1000+ characters in the series.

Very different books for me. RR Martin's ASOIAF is all about the story and the characters, while Tolkien first created a language then a world for it, the stories/history of that world were secondary - accessoires shaped to match the main piece of art in beauty.

It can get a touch tedious when you get hit with a string of less interesting chapters...especially since they end up splitting the books based on location of the characters (so you may not see a chapter of your favourite character for a long time). That said, I enjoyed the read.

I found some of the Sansa chapters difficult to get through, I must admit.

A good trick is to read it through according to the character e.g. read all the Tyrion chapters, then the Arya, then the Brienne etc etc  Then you get the flow of that person.

Nobody is saying this is great literature by the way - it;'s crap really, but it's brilliant crap!

Is this from the Ms Targaryen school of punctuation?

It's from the Mrs Typo school - but if I WERE a female character, Ms Targaryen is the one I'd want to be!!

It's only crap if your expectations are too high. If you go in and compare it to something you know is crap (50 shades of grey), then it will become a literary masterpiece.

In truth it's not the best written series, but it's still exciting. Moments that drop your jaw in the tv series, will still drop your jaw in the books. I prefer reading about them too. Using your imagination to picture the scenes is more satisfying more often than not.

I have never read 50 Shades of Grey and don't intend to.   I think I didn't really use the word "crap" in the correct way.  All I meant is - let's not pretend it's great literature.  It'll never be on an A level English course.  But it is unputdownable!

Why read about when you can get a hunk like me and live the dream

I've just melted! (despite the lack of question mark!)
