Is Schurrle the new David Hopkin?

Featured Replies

Am I alone in thinking that, based on his performances in a blue shirt, that Andre Schurrle is not very good ?

I know he's been scoring regularly for the Germans but I 'm talking about performances for us. He's missed a sack load if chances and created very little. He rarely beats his man and often gives the ball away. He certainly seems to be the weakest of our attacking midfielders and I would opt for Moses ahead of him any day. I do hope that tracking back is not the new going forward.

With the exception of the one game against an laughable full back in Bucharest he's reminded me if David Hopkin (handsome fellas both).

Wow, way to write off a player after only 13 appearances.

He set up this one.

Personally I think he's been quite good, he's favoured side is the left but despite fairly indifferent form so far this season Hazard has mostly played there. On the couple of occasions that Schurrle has played there he has done very well.

It might be he gets more time on the right but you have to be patient that he is playing in a different role, in a new team in a new league.

Not every player is going to have an instantaneous impact but, in my opinion, so far so good from Schurrle.

Far too early to write him off but of course he isn't anywhere near proven yet.

He runs at people at least, which is encouraging!

Of course he needs time and hopefully will come good.

I guess my posting, though a bit tongue in cheek, is a reaction to a great many fans raving about him because he works hard and tracks back. I do hope that isn't now our benchmark of a quality attacking midfielder.

I think it has been so clear that we need him in the team by the games he hasnt played. Newcastle defeat and West brom draw. He may not be as flash as Mata or Hazard but he is a hard worker and makes defenders work. I think he is a bit like Duff.

The thing that I think makes Schurrle stand out is that he really makes defenders brick themselves when he has possession near the box.

Mata and Hazard are flashy and nimble but sometimes that isn't enough to give defenders something to think about, and that's what Schurrle provides.

Oscar is a bit more physical now but Schurrle is by far the most imposing of our attacking midfielders, which is quite surprising since he's not very tall.

I always quite liked Hopkin (but then again i thought Burley was almost as good as Maradona!).

it is early days for Shirl but so far whilst being quite likeable and showing some good stuff he's reminded me massively of Kalou (i could tell then apart in a line up).

I can't even believe what I'm reading because I think Schurrle is fantastic and has great skill and great potential. I would have him in my team week in-week out.

Wtf that's strange. Every other site has him as 184cm haha. He does look taller though!

Schurrle is definitely not 5 foot 7.  He's 6 feet for sure, same height as Torres.

175 cm according to the player profile thats about 5'7"

lol in what universe does 5'7 convert to 175 cm?!

I'm 1.75m and I would estimate Schürrle to be somewhat taller than I am.

Oh and give me Schürrle over Moses any time of day. No doubt about who is the better player and may improve on that as well.

I'm yet to be convinced by Schurrle. Early days and he has shown glimpses of quality but give me skill and ability over hard work and athleticism any day.

That said , have to say it's a great title for a thread!! Hopkin was sh*te!

A bit of support for my view but as expected its a minority view - strange because we all watch the same game and to my eye (so far and fingers crossed) he looks very limited and workman like in a blue shirt. And yes, I am serious about Moses (puff, puff) - be he doesn't track back!

As for the thread name it was either Hopkin or John McNaught (RIP) and I opted not for the latter out if respect.

Tough one. Seems to have performed in the big matches, when others have been off colour. Not sure we have seen the best of him yet.

I personally feel a bit sorry for Moses, who wasn't at all bad last season, and honestly is a perfectly solid squad player. I hope he does well enough (not too well of course) to come back next season when things are a bit clearer around who is a part of the long term plan.
