Diego Costa to Chelsea

Fully agree with you Syd.

I think I am right in saying that the national football associations can insist that their own medical staff make an assessment of a player's reported condition and can still call them up following their check, even against the advice of the club's medical staff. What should happen IMO is that if the player subsequently suffers further damage to the original injury, or a recurrence of it, the national association should have to compensate the club fully for the term of the injury.

Absolutely, but (I'll try find a source when I'm off my phone) I've heard that any club who wishes to play in FIFA-controlled competitions (EPL etc) are not permitted to take any legal action against FIFA or else they forfeit their registration. To quote Didier, it's a f**king disgrace.

If Chelsea can argue Costa has an acute injury then they can refuse to release him (think Ryan Giggs' magic two-week groin strains). The real danger is if Costa isn't specifically injured but is extremely highly at risk of injury- Chelsea must release him and hope the NT manage him safely, with no recompense if things go wrong.

But after a lot of campaigning by clubs FIFA did introduce a compensation package:

Does anyone have a good knowledge of Costa's injury and how long term it is? He will regain 100% fitness at some point right?

It is a bit of a mystery, isn't it?

It really cant be that serious if he is able to stay fit and play every week. There is no doubt if he was allowed a month to rest it all the problems would probably go, but of course we cant afford to do that.

I guess if his strain / pull / whatever it is, is allowed to rest a little easier during the week it should heal in good time.

He's bound to be getting regular massages and treatment to aid healing. I am sure he'll need to do some gym work to strengthen the area also.

Haven't read through it Englishman but I would imagine that the "compensation" paid to the club would only cover the tangible costs i.e payment of his wages whilst out injured and perhaps the cost of the treatment itself?

However, that wouldn't account for the intangible associated costs for losing a key player. As an example scenario; Costa is picked and plays for Spain against the advice of our medical staff and completely tears his hamstring. Recovery period to full fitness, say, 2- 3 months. Without him we struggle to score goals and slip down the league table. We bounce back on his return but finish outside the top four and miss out on a CL place for the following season. What would that cost? Even if you could out a price on it I am damn sure FIFA wouldn't reimburse us for it.

Football is messed up when it comes to International sides.

With the example of Costa, Chelsea have paid £32m for him and pay him a hefty wage too. We hold his registration.

But come an international break we are at the mercy of the national team to look after him whilst they borrow him for two weeks.

Their aims are much more short term than our own and so why wouldn't they risk his fitness when if he were to be injured there's almost no consequence to them as they wont need to play again for months meanwhile the parent clubs multi million pound investment returns injured and is useless to them until they recover.

Since Costa has trouble fitting in Spanish NT, I doubt Del Bosque will be too sad if Costa is unavailable because of his fitness problems.

I'm confused as to why we're even governed by FIFA, we don't compete in any FIFA competitions, how can they enforce any fines they hand out to clubs?

I imagine this will only be the starting point for clubs. It just establishes the principle that national FAs can be liable if their players get injured. If Barcelona lose Messi for four months because of an injury he sustained playing for Argentina, then £500k or £1m won't do much to soften the blow.

FIFA is the federation of all national FAs into one governing body for the whole sport. If you play in a national-FA registered competition, you agree to play by FIFA rules.

I dunno why did we played him whole 90mins should have subbed in 60. (I know we were not in comfortable position at that time) But he has been struggling with his hammy. Remy would have been good with this pace in the last 30 mins..

He didn't seem to be struggling and he's more of a threat than Remy so that's why he stayed on.

He has 5 days to recover which should be enough.

I know but precaution is better than cure. Since he's not 100% we should have played him full game. But anyway hope we kill the Arsenal game early than he would have rest.

All this talk about Costa being injured, needs several days of rest...etc.

Knowing Jose, most likely he likes to recreate games with the media. Just watch Costa against Arsenal when he scores a brace. Lol.

Still think its nuts he plays for Spain now even though he's quite clearly Brazilian. Surely if he has no direct Spanish blood line there you shouldn't be allowed to play for them.

Personally i'm glad he plays for Spain.

It's only a couple of hours on a plane and 1hr time difference without 'jet lag', compared to Brazil 11hrs on the plane, and 4hrs time difference and of course the jet lag thrown in.

There's a world (literally) of difference between travelling, which must take it's toll over such a short timespan.

No doubt, still think its a bit strange he's been allowed to play for them just.

Don't think it is strange at all. He has spent his formative years in Spain and probably identifies himself as Spanish. Just like there are several Indians who think of themselves as American or British. Nothing wrong with that. You need to be a citizen and that's it.

I know we should judge him by how he leaves the club. (Jose quote). Not how he starts. But dam, how good has he been? He couldnt of had a better start.
