Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

Featured Replies

I don't get it...how can he afford 5 million himself?

Im guessing he will wave the signing on fee from us possibly, also maybe wave loyalty fees etc from Madrid.

We do love Brazilians...

Luis, Costa, Oscar, Willian and Ramires

Also there's a few yet to make the breakthrough. They will look right at home in our yellow away kit next season!

So I guess that this means that we won't be seeing much of ivanovic this season then? Jose doesn't rotate his defence.

Ivanovic is gonna back up Azpilicueta this year and then when Terry leaves or retires next summer Ivanovic will go and play his natural position at CB.  It's a great concept and our defense will be dominate!

"Chelsea target Filipe Luis has been banished to train with the Atletico Madrid reserves after Diego Simeone became angry and disappointed with the Brazilian's behaviour.  A £16 million bid has been rejected by Atletico because they want the full £20 million to activate his release clause even though they know the player wants to head to Stamford Bridge."

That's from ESPN FC's Transfer Talk blog.  Once we get this transfer and the Diego Costa one officially finalized, I say stop dealing with AM.  They sound like they are absolutely full of themselves right now.

The Porto syndrome is in full effect. They need to....

He has 1 year left on his contract right? Tell Atletico to shove the 20mill up their backsides, tell him to wait it out a year and join next year on a bosman deal, and we can just go with Bertrand and Azpi as our two left backs for next season. No problem.

Oh and tell Atletico they get no more of our players on loan again. Period.

I'm starting to think that we tell Athletico and sadly Filipe Luis, "Thanks but we're done with your shenanigans."  I know he wants to be here, and that is absolutely admirable, but like axman said, he can always wait his contract out and move here on a free transfer next summer.

Now if we still are going after a LB, I have fallen into the "Ricardo Rodriguez" boat, after seeing his performance for the Swiss in Brazil.

We will sign Luis I'm sure, but I do have trouble seeing the value in this one. Too old for the money, but will be a help this season at least and of course it's not my money.

His height should be useful at set pieces, as should his experience.

As stated earlier, I will make a bet that Ivan plays mostly central this season. Ivan's performance against spuds was compelling evidence that he is fully up to that job now.

Luis has potential to be the best LB in the PL, I feel. We should wait to see soon.

Potential at 29 years old.... so he comes in and struggles for his first season, unable to displace Azpi, we have then got a 30 year old on a 3-5 year contract who isnt first choice. Depreciating value, higher wages, an expectancy of first tream football. Id much prefer buying a younger player who if he doesnt shine in his first 6 months has plenty of time to develop with the correct coaching, will appreciate in value. Azpi, Ivan, Cahill all fit into this billing perfectly, none cost more than £10mil, none were over 25 and all of them have just been integral parts the best defence in the league last year. This is the exact profile of player we should be looking for, not a LB who is in the sweetspot of his prime, thus on the way down, and has hardly played at the highest level in his career.

The best comparison im going to make is Yuri Zhirkov. we signed him for £18mil in 2009 at 26 years old. He failed to really cement a place in the squad and was sold 2 years later at 28 for about £13.5mil. we lost money but only really about £4-5mil. If we signed Luis for £20mil and had to sell him in 2 years time, who is going to pay £16mil for a 31 year old LB on substantial wages? Look at Torres, Bosingwa, Ferreira, Bogarde we couldn't shift any of these players until their contracts ran out. Even though they werent doing the business on the pitch their wages were prohibitive to selling them.

wtf why would we pay 20 mil for a good defender but not a great one and he's nearly 30 as well.

£20mil for a 29 year old who has only 1 year left on his contract. Utd paid £24 for RVP only 2 years ago from a direct PL Rival. Whilst I think he'll be ok as a signing I feel like if Athleti dont want to play ball then we should look elsewhere, he is not a £20 mil asset even in todays market. They have already signed a replacement and frankly their money situation requires sales. They are basically playing a game of brinkmanship hoping that we break first and just pay his full fee. What they dont realise is that there are other fish and we are not exactly desperate for him.

bear in mind the age of our squad next season. If Cech is dislodged by Courtois, we could realistically have one player in the lineup who is over 30, in JT. I'm all for youth and bringing through the kids, but look at the successful teams over the years and they will have a smattering of more experienced players with level heads who can grab the game by the scruff of the neck, and pick players up throughout the season when the inevitable rocky patch hits.

That great Barcelona side of a few years ago had the likes of Puyol and Xavi in and around the 30 mark. Jose's inter side was littered with experience, and even the real madrid side that just won the champions league had a few older heads in there. Look at the milan team that came and took care of the dippers in the 2007 CL final - experience throughout. It doesnt hurt to have a few older heads in there.

I dont accept that a player at 28 / 29 represents bad business, and I am seeing a lot of pessimism on here regarding "what ifs" and his inevitable downfall now he is 29 years old. Shock horror - I'm sure few of us would have complained if Ashley had been given a one year extension, and he is 33. We dont know the ins and outs of the contract, the wages, the terms, the price that will ultimately be paid for the player. We have the likes of hazard, oscar, schurrle all around the 22 / 23 mark, matic and fabgregas at 25 / 26, costa at 25, dave at 24 and cahill at 28.

The experience will be valued. If we get 3 good seasons out of him, and win trophies along the way, then for me, £20m is fair. We dont have responsibility for the books and meeting FFP requirements, I'm sure the board has it in hand... so lets sit back and enjoy the fact that we are in a position to be able to spunk such money on a player that our manager believes is good enough to warrant a starting spot.

Whilst I agree an amount of experience is needed, and that IF we get 3 decent years out of him he will be worth £20 million. BUT after those 3 years we will be in the position of shopping for another LB. This deal would only make sense IMO if we can also bring in/through a younger player who in 2-3 years time will be able to take up his place not cost a further £20 million. If we dont we'll then have spent £40 million filling a LB spot that Shaw or An.Other could have filled for roughly the same money. We already have a decent LB (although he is a RB) and a decent back up. We dont need a LB just because. Waht we need is the right player coming in. For me thats not Luis.
