Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

He was the worst player for us on that night and generally his performances have been rather poor. In fact, I can't remember a single decent performance. Of course he's homegrown and we all want our own talents to succeed, but in the case of Bertrand it will never happen. We might as well accept it and move on.

Worst player on the night? There are no candidates for worst player on that night and if there were he certainly wouldn't be among them.

As for his performances being generally poor well that's complete nonsense IMO at no point for us has he looked like a weak link or looked like he hasn't fitted in with the other players.

The only bad game i can remember him having was shaktar at home and they gave all our defenders problems, other than that there aren't any games for us where he hasn't looked up to it.

Look, there is no point talking him up. He just isn't talented enough and won't ever play a significant role for us.

Another truth is that Morinho had plenty of time to assess him in training and the fact that he left him out completely in all but two games last season is evidence enough for me that Bertrand isn't good enough. I trust JM's judgement on this one.

Talking him up? I'm giving my opinion on him based on what I've seen of him. Based on what he's done and shown at Chelsea he is talented enough though unfortunately you're probably right that he'll no longer play a significant role for us..... our loss.

Wouldn't you agree that Mourinho had enough time to see whether Bertrand has what it takes or not?

Yes he has had enough time but that doesn't mean he's making the right choice or that Bertrand actually had a fair shot under him. He played 3 times for us last season the only start I can remember was away at Arsenal in the cup which for me was our best early season performance and he played fine, wasn't seen again though despite Ash being dropped from the team until April  RDM gave Bertrand that shot in the first team and he paid him back with performances on the pitch. Mourinho hasn't given him a chance out on the pitch and that's where it matters for me.

At clubs like Chelsea you only get a chance if you're good enough and you've proven so. If you look at the players that start for us week in week out, virtually all of them are key members of major national teams around the globe. Where does Bertrand fit in there?

Bertrand never got a chance, true, but that's because he isn't good enough and not because someone at CFC has been unfair to him. For me, everything points towards this conclusion.

If Bertrand was to get a chance, I assume many other of our academy players would consequently deserve that chance too. We'd quickly turn into Arsenal of the last 8 years - lots of young players playing regular first team football, but no trophies for 8 years. It is no coincidence that they won the FA Cup when they eventually changed their philosophy in this respect.

We all desperately want to see a player of our own be a regular first-teamer, but some things are simply more important than that.

Apologies to plough in to your debate but I can't help it having read this.

Just thought I'd say you won't read a bigger line of nonsense all day than that above, perhaps even if you spent all day long on an Arsenal forum too. For the record, I'm all for the Luis transfer, but come on...

Sorry but this is nonsense, Bertrand has never played a bad game for us, ever.

Yes I had actually, I remember watching him for Deportivo back in 2006 (when I watched Spanish football consistently) and I highly rated him then. He was one of those players that I always signed on PES aswell because I liked him so much in real life. I remember finding out about he had suffered a bad injury but I wasn't watching La Liga as much then and it was thought his career was over. I was actually quite surprised he came back and reached the top level after I'd read his career was over.

Well that puts me in my place :) i had never heard of him before last season

Maybe we have a different understanding of what good football is then ;)

In any case, I doubt Bertrand will ever play any role whatsoever for this club and this thread isn't about him in the first place!

Maybe we have a different understanding of what good football is then ;)

That much is very clear.

I know this has already been commented on by others but it really infuriates me when I see Chelsea fans with this view on Bertrand.

Now that is true, not just us fans but managers have very different views on players, that is why there is some many debates on football.

Oh by the way your totally wrong on your view of Bertrand, go stand on the naughty step for a hour.

I'll join Mourinho there ;)

PVA is likely on his way and Ake was only slightly better than dreadful yesterday and could do with a season on loan, so in all honesty I think we should keep Bertrand as cover, although I have come to terms with the fact that he is likely fed up and wants regular starts, even if he has to take a few steps down the table.

Shame really, I always had high hopes for him.

Glad we went about this business as quickly as we did.  Fantastic signing, and strengthen's a position that was vacated by one of the best LB's to ever play the game.

I don't think Jose could risk not signing someone like Luis for the LB position.  HIs further comments about bringing in some youth team players is exciting, but was never going to go in to the new season with Bertrand as our sole LB.

We shall see in a few years when hes still putting in run of the mill performances for a bottom half PL side

I watched maybe 25-30 Atletico games last season because I had become a Diego Costa fanboy the season before. The word I'd use to describe Luis is definitely 'solid'. He isn't flashy but does his job and I have no doubt he'll be a success here. Probably more excited by this signing than I should be :p

I haven't watched Luis play a lot, but something that concerns me about defenders who have been playing in Spain is that they do very little defending and their main priority is attacking (i.e. Dani Alves & Marcelo) Does anyone think this will be a problem with Luis? Or maybe I'm just generalizing every defender in the Spanish league based on Alves & Marcelo?

Won't be a problem at all. Might've been due to Atletico playing a low line, but I can't recall him being caught out at all actually. Probably happened, but it wasn't a usual occurence.
