OK, an immense stretch and apologize for wasting bandwidth. However, latest rumors are Mata to be sold for around 25M in January. Would Jose be on board in signing him for roughly half of what we sold him for? If United were willing to sell him back to us, could (or would) Jose go for him knowing we have Cesc and Matic (plus Ramirez, Mikel etc.)... I know we are covered in the midfield but it be wonderful to see Mata back in Chelsea blue and linking up with Cesc, Oscar (in a deeper role as I have been saying since we signed him), Matic, and even Mike... I understand I am stretching this and perhaps my love for Mata is obscuring my judgement but...

But really think that Jose doesnt rate him well. In one of his recent interviews he was asked about his "new football philosophy". To which he replied "a manager can say I have this and that philosophy, but if he doesnt have the players to execute it, it's worthless"  <--- paraphrased of course...

25mil is too much, needs to be under 20mil and his wages significantly lower than the ones he's on at United, but yes I think he gives us something different to anyone else we have in that attacking 3.

 

That said Fabregas can do most of what Mata can, and more.

I would do cartwheels, but it seems like Jose is favoring a 4-3-3 more and more with every window and I don't see Mata ever succeeding in the PL as a deeper midfielder or winger (at least to the level of our other attacking mids).

I am really interested to see where he will fit in under Van Gaal though.

if we get a couple of unfortunate injuries, I would take him back on a loan. However, very unlikely to happen, he has declined since he left us.

Would I welcome him back to the club?  Yes, with open arms. But there is no way it's going to happen.

Perhaps if Mou gets sacked for failing to win anything (whuuut???!!) and then Roman brings back RDM.

Its sad how things have gone for him, but ultimately he's going to end up at some foreign club (unless ManU do something stupid) either in January or the summer, which is what we all wanted when it became clear that he was not in Jose's plans.

Mata loses out because he can only work behind the striker. He's a non event when played on either wing and does not have the defensive ability to work as a midfielder in a central role.

United have forked out the best part of £40 million and their summer signings have meant they need to let him go because he won;t work in Van Gaals set up. A very expensive mistake from them.

Would I personally have him back? Yes, mainly because I think he's a far better footballer than Oscar who has shown next to nothing for the past 6 months.

Would Jose bring him back? 110% No.

I stand by Joses decision, Mata was not a good fit for his Chelsea vision and who are we to argue...he's forgotton more about football than any of us actually know.

Mata is a very good player, but he doesn't belong in the current Chelsea side as he doesn't possess the attributes of a 'Mourinho' player.

 

He's fairly slow, and very lightweight. Speed and power are what make us so deadly at counter attacking sides the way we have done this season.

Would take him back in a heartbeat, but he has even less chance of playing now we have strengthed in the areas he plays. If he leaves Man utd he will just go back to Spain probably. Unless Arsenal come in for him again.
