This won't happen. Jose won't take him back especially now with team we have . I love the guy he did so much for the club but there is no need for him at this pint.

I feel sorry for Mata as he was our best player between 2011 to 2013, but I still think that Jose made the correct call on him despite the toughness it would have been for him considering Mata was a fan favourite of the club.

 

Mata was brilliant in the years I mentioned earlier and he really pushed us along when we were struggling for consistency but I think he started to get found out as our team improved under Jose and his spot was under threat. Apparently Jose gave him the chance to regain his place in the side, but Mata wasn't happy with this and as a result he was happy to leave and join Manchester United after lagging on the bench for a while.

 

As an attacking player, Mata is brilliant in scoring goals, assisting others around him and being a very creative player in general but his main weakness was his defensive side of his game where his backtracking wasn't all that good and he could easily get beaten and pushed off the ball one on one especially against bigger players like Yaya Toure for example. Jose always emphasises on defence first and I think that's where Mata let himself down. 

 

Mata's time at Manchester United has vindicated Jose's decision to let him go. I have a feeling Mata will either leave United in the winter or summer transfer window and he'll probably return to his old club in Valencia which may be a good move for his career. 

Bump. With the benefit of hindsight, I can't believe we would rather play Willian/Oscar than him, would love to somehow get him back and have him play with a shield of Matic/???

Please God bring him back.

When he was here we finished 25 points behind the champions (5 points behind Spurs and 1 point behind Newcastle) one year and then 14 points behind the champions the next. 

 

My view about Mata has always been the same. Great player whom you need to build the team around to get the best out of, but he's not a good enough player to win you the league if you do that. He's a great option for a third or fourth place team which is why I could see him going back to Valencia for about £20 million.

I know this was months ago mate, but interested to hear your opinion on it now? I'd certainly rather have him in the team than Oscar or Willian and I think we'd be better off for it as well. Cesc is somewhat of a luxury player as well but I'd certainly rather him than Rami.

Watching him today and he lost loads of posession being pushed of the ball with ease, that and a lack of pace are huge failings in this league unfortunately, and the reason Jose let him go and lvg has benched him lately.

You say that, but do you not remember how well he played for us under RDM and The Fat One? He was getting loads of goals and assists, and in big games as well.

Jose doesn't really go back on his decisions so it would never happen.

I'd take Mata in a heartbeat over Willian, Oscar and Cuardrado.

He choose to build the team around Oscar though and IMO he got it wrong, in the bigger pitcher though he may have got it right in terms of balance and where we are now but I can't help feel that we lost a diamond to fit in a lesser player.

Fair enough was just interested to hear your thoughts, my problem with Oscar is that his days are far too infrequent, last 2 seasons he's been below par IMO especially at the tail end of the season, I watched Brazil's first game at the WC last year and he was outstanding and thought this is the player we signed, the rest of the World Cup and then the start of the season he just didn't look anywhere near the level of that game. Not sure if anyone else seen it but it was probably the best performance I've seen from him.

Cherry-picking is such an easy thing to do.

 

 

2011-12 was a creaking squad in need of quality and poor tactics by AVB.

 

As for 2012-13 you should remember that we were playing with a dysfunctional striker in Torres, and Lampard-Ramires played in the pivot for many games, and that Hazard and Oscar were in their debut season in English football. These were the reasons why we finished 14 pts behind Utd in the league and not because, as you say, "he's not a good enough player to win you the league".

Yes we were shipping silly goals that season and throwing away leads but as this season has shown, Mata was not to blame for that.

Tell me, with a world class DM in Matic and the defensive work rate of our AM's why we've been throwing away leads this season ?

And how many times have we needed Courtois to bail us out ?

 

Mata's the kind of player who can win you the league, in fact, he's the type of player that can make the difference between winning or drawing a game.

 

We should be happy that Fergie has retired now because had he been there at Utd they would've surely punished us for our slack form in the 2nd half of the league this season.

He'll never play us again as long as Jose is in charge.

We haven't properly replaced Mata though.
