Raheem Sterling to Chelsea

Featured Replies

It seems like Jose really wants Sterling, maybe he sees something special in him which we not.

If he does have something special Brenda's sure as heck not going to be able to hone it!

I highly doubt it. It's similar to the reason (excuse) Jose didn't sign (shaw), you can't have a teenager earning 100k a week while seasoned players on 80k. Sterling will demand 150K ( or around that), does Matic or Dave earn that much?

Rooney/ferdinand 11 and 15 years ago ... lets look at it pragmaticly, it puts him in soldardo territory, or lamela territory. Half a dimaria less then a Juan Mata, about the same as a luke shaw

(apologies that I keep replying to posts made a few pages ago, I don't check this thread frequently enough)

I think the best way you can compare value for money is by looking at what we personally pay, as that for me is the most important standard.

Sterling would most likely be the 2nd most expensive Chelsea player of all time (if his fee exceeds 32 million). If we use 30-35 million as a reasonable expectation for the price, that puts him in the same bracket as Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, and 10-12 million more than Willian, Mata and Oscar.

It also makes him 10-12 million more than what we sold Schurrle for, just below what we sold Juan Mata for (the reigning two-time player of the year), 5-7m more than what we sold the hottest young striker in Europe for (Lukaku), and double what we sold KDB for, all of these fees being incurred in the last 18 months.

Is that value for money? no.

Can we do better in terms of value for money? Quite obviously.

He's a better player the Schurrle, arguably better then KDB and a differnt player all together the Lukaku who is proving to be not all he was cracked up to be (9 league goals this year)

Additionally like it or not there is a premium placed on he fact he is English, right now we can't actually bring in a non home grown player because we have no room in our squad, this in its self probably boots the price by about 5 million at least, again like it or not.

I Personally think in the current market he's worth about 30 mill, when you take in to account, age, achievement, potential and home grown status.

It's fine to say we can get better value for money but i think if your going to say that you need to give a name as well....

At the least it looks like Cech and Drogba are leaving come the season end, possibly also Mikel, so theres no issue with squad room.

Marco Reus would be available and probably cheaper as one example, that being said we have Cuadrado and Salah and surely 1 of them will play themselves into form given a run of games and a proper pre-season.

Either way 30-35 million on Sterling is a robbery and i'd rather we dedicate that money to better targets.

We've been linked with Koke and Griezmann who if rumour is to be believed would cost in excess of £40m. Out of interest are you opposed to both of those signings based purely on transfer fee?

Yes

Blimey!

If we wanted him we should have bought him for half that amount like Atletico did last season.

That being said, if they were available at the same price, i'd take Griezmann over Sterling.

Either way anything over 30 million needs to be for world class talent, players that can individually win games and who stand up in the big moments. There's a reason that only Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have earned such large fees (and Torres who was that good at a time).

Is Raheem Sterling that man? There's no evidence for that being the case other than a season spend riding the coattails of one of the worlds greatest players followed by a season being outshone by someone not deemed as good as Oscar  by his country, who is usually identified as our own weak link.

Maybe we didn't have enough funds at that point after spending big on Costa, Cesc and Luis?

We only signed Cuadrado when we got rid of Schurrle and Salah.

Right, we chose to buy a reserve left back (keeping in mind we already had Bertrand at the time) instead of Griezmann who went for only 9 million quid more.

He wasn't a reserve left back at that point.

He was starting left back for the champions of Spain and the team playing in the CL final.

At this time we already had Schurrle, Willian, Salah, Hazard and Oscar. While at left back we had Dave while Betrand was deemed not good enough so got punted on loan.

6 players for 3 positions (you forgot KDB) where frequent rotation is used vs 2 players for 1 position where we never rotate unless necessary, it's pretty even.

Either way this is well off topic now, and as I said i'd prefer Griezmann over Sterling if they came at a similar price anyway.

But there is evidence for that, this season in fact where he's either scored decisive goals or contributed to the wins. I know everyone went nuts for Coutinho which most of us found inexplicable but Sterling did step up in matches against Southampton, Burnley, West Ham, Spurs and even against us in the first leg of the League Cup when he danced through the best defence in the league.

That's despite being in a poor team. Now that doesn't mean he's a certainty to be a world beater but there is certainly evidence that he could be and not just in a season where he was playing alongside Suarez and Sturridge, but also when he was playing alongside Balotelli and Lallana.

Raheem Sterling's representative has said the forward won't sign a new deal with Liverpool and branded club legend Jamie Carragher 'a knob'.

Aidy Ward, who has been heavily criticised by pundits over his handling of the situation, told the Evening Standard that the forward wouldn't a agree to a new contract, even if Liverpool offered nearly £1million a week.

“I don’t care about the PR of the club and the club situation. I don’t care.

“He is definitely not signing. He’s not signing for £700, £800, £900 thousand a week. He is not signing.

“My job is to make sure I do the best with them (my clients). If people say I am bad at my job, or they are badly advised it does not matter.”

Sterling has already turned down a £100k per week deal and was booed at the club's award ceremony.

Speaking on Sky Sports Carragher lambasted Ward over his actions in contract negotiations and told Sterling to change his agent.

“Carragher is a knob. Everybody knows it. Any of the criticism from current pundits or ex-Liverpool players - none of them things matter to me. It is not relevant," Ward told the Standard.

His agent seems a nice guy then.

But hitting back today, Ward told the Standard he “didn’t care” about the club or its image, dismissed criticism by former players as “irrelevant” and branded Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher “a knob”.

He said: “I don’t care about the PR of the club and the club situation. I don’t care.

“He is definitely not signing. He’s not signing for £700, £800, £900 thousand a week. He is not signing.

“My job is to make sure I do the best with them (my clients). If people say I am bad at my job, or they are badly advised it does not matter.”

But in an extraordinary attack on one of the club’s most respected former players, Ward said: “Carragher is a knob. Everybody knows it. Any of the criticism from current pundits or ex-Liverpool players - none of them things matter to me. It is not relevant.”

He said their criticism would be the same if Sterling stayed and then left in two years’ time when his contract expires, the only difference being the club would receive less money in transfer fees.

And he also appeared to blame the club for making news about the discussions public, saying: “How did this all occur? There is no smoke without fire.”

Ward said Sterling would not move to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, and suggested Chelsea or Manchester City were the most likely destinations.

He added: “I am not worried. Worried is making a decision not knowing what is going to happen. Every premier league club will make a bid for him.”

Saw a few papers on my way to work this morning that seemed to have Man U as frontrunners for Sterling.

He'd never get into that team with the amount of wide players you would think.

As much as I don't like Liverpool. It really does make a mockery of contracts, I do kinda agree with Carragher about how he can just take on the club like this and force a move. Having his agent makes these comments shines him in a really bad light in my opinion. Sure it's nice to see Liverpool suffer but what if he is this great player people keep saying and signs for us. Real Madrid come calling and he does the same to us, we would be outraged.

Liverpool should let him rot in the reserves and not take a transfer fee, would never happen but I would love it.

The Guardian are reporting that United have made an approach but it was quickly rebuffed.

Personally I just can't see Liverpool agreeing to sell their best player to Manchester United, the decision would go down like a lead balloon with the fans. If he's going to leave I would imagine they'd much sooner agree to sell to us, City or Arsenal.

Strong rumour is Sterling fancies a move back to London where he grew up so if we were interested in him there's a very good chance that us and Arsenal will be the front runners for him.
