Raheem Sterling to Chelsea

Featured Replies

Daily Express reporting that we're set to lodge a £40m bid for Sterling.

Well timed rumour right after Liverpool have secured Firmino. I do think Sterling will leave, but City seems to be alot more interessted to sign him.

They've been pretty quick to get their bids in but they've been testing the waters if anything.

Let's remember that the likes of Salah and Willian were pretty far along in their negotiations with Liverpool and Tottenham before we stepped in and just paid the asking price rather than dicking around.

Not saying that's what's happening with Sterling but if Chelsea are interested I would expect us to lodge a pretty serious offer and truly show our intent if we did.

Or maybe they're just talking about it more.  Why make things public if you don't need to?

Chelsea are not willing to bid above £40m for Raheem Sterling, according to Sky sources.

Manchester City have tabled two bids for Sterling, the second believed to be around £40m for the Liverpool and England forward.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Chelsea are also interested in signing the 20-year-old but are not prepared to meet Liverpool's £50m valuation of the player.

Strange we would declare our interest but at the same time say we are not going to offer any more than what City have which has been rejected from Liverpool.

Unless Liverpool would rather sell to us than City but I doubt that and of course they will be trying to squeeze as much £ as they can for him.

I'm a big fan of Stirling, but it also might be worth considering ross Barkley for considerably less, especially after a so so season.

I think sterling on the pitch is more grounded than Barkley and is certainly more mature in terms of play style but when it comes to talent I think Barkley is the more talented. Though I guess Sterling can cover more areas on the pitch than Barkley.

I really don't think Sterling is worth 40million, if he was coming from a different country It would be around 20 in my opinion.

I do think he's a tad overated but I wouldn't say no.

I think Everton would be looking for a hell of a big transfer fee for Barkley. Great player though, would ideally have him and sterling, never gonna happen though!

For 30 they would have to part with him IMO, can't justify more then that

I don't get the hype about Barkley at all. People talk about Sterling and Kane being overrated English talent, but no one in our league approaches the level of Barkley in terms of being overrated. The guy has 3 assists in his entire career. That's shockingly poor. He had zero assists in the 2013/14 season, supposedly his breakout year where he scored a mammoth 6 goals.

Barkley is pure potential at this point and outside of his physical attributes and the occasional (once a season) moment of magic, I'm not sure what he's done to suggest he's going to be a top player. He's probably more raw than a lot of our youth players who can't even get into the squad atm. Why buy Everton's project for an obscene sum when we can develop plenty of our own for free?

Barkley isn't the most technically gifted but he has that ability to glide past players ala yaya toure/essien obviously not in the same class but potential is clearly there.

Is he really worth 40 mill ?

Is Luke Shaw really worth 30 mil etc.

Basically the market is completely distorted when it comes to young English talent and it's proabably going to get worse with the league gettting richer and richer. His "real" value is probably 15 mil, but we'd be paying for his potential and, I guess, his Englishness. Personally, I would be uncomfortable going over 40 mil for Sterling and it seems like the club feels the same way. City on the other hand appear to be desperate to land him, so I don't think we'll get him unless Jose really, really wants him (in which case I'll support it regardless of the price, which is bound to be outrageous). It'll be a risk, as it always is with potential, but if it works out, we'll probably be laughing at the sum 3 years from now when Alex Oxlade Chamberlain signs with City for 70 mil with a tally of 4 goals and 3 assists.

He does (this was what I was referring to with "physical attributes"), but this usually ends with him running into traffic and losing the ball, or just generally taking the worst possible option in front of him. For a guy with the ability to glide past players with ease, a return of 8 goals and 2 assists in 2 seasons is telling, isn't it? He should be running that midfield, but he either goes missing for entire games or is visible for the worst reasons. These issues could be ironed out in time, sure, and perhaps Everton's style doesn't suit him, but he's so, so far away from being ready to consistently play for a top team. If we bought him, he'd probably end up rotting on the bench, or worse, taking away the few minutes that RLC, a player with similar physical attributes, would get.

I wasn't trying to suggest he doesn't have potential - all I was saying is that potential is all he has right now. He's actually shown very, very little on the pitch for a player Everton are undoubtedly going to ask over 20 mil for.

I've completely ripped into the guy, but I actually like him and want him to do well. Just don't think he's ready for the next level.

I'm a sterling fan. Would be a great asset to the right team and perfect for our right side.

Comparisons with Barkley are laughable.

Honestly he offers nothing that Raul Meireles didn't. Just boots the ball if he's within 35 yards of the goal whether it's the best option or not.
