John Stones

Featured Replies

Our whole approach to this transfer was wrong right from the start. If Jose identified Stones as the player the team needed, our bidding should have started early in the summer to give us, Everton and Stones himself more time.  If we did that, we wouldn't have had this mess to deal with only days before the the window closes. Someone at the front office gambled that Everton would eventually fold, and it didn't work out that way.

I would argue that maybe Stones could have also put his request in sooner. Although as some have suggested on here maybe the timing of it is intentional as Everton may want to get the money in and let Stones go late so they don't have to spend it.

It's in the players hands now. He handed in the transfer request. He needs to back it with conviction if he wants the move now. Whether you think it's right or not depends on how you feel clubs should act to transfer requestes. Personally once the player has put it on writing that he wants to leave I think it should be worked out how that can happen in the best interests of all party's

Careful, barak, you don't want to go placing decision-making as important as this in the hands of a confused 21yr-old, let alone one that's under massive pressure. Let people like Martinez guide him, he's got his best interests at heart - the kid doesn't know what he's doing half the time. Do you want to go to Chelsea? Don't you want to go to Chelsea? Questions like these are just too much for someone of his age and inexperience.

It makes me laugh how this saga has made so many Everton fans come out the woodwork to tell us how they are a much bigger club than us, always have been, and always will be.

If this is the case, why do they need to keep telling us about it?

I am not into who is a 'bigger club'..... I really don't care to be honest....

I do however think Everton fans are on slightly thin ground with the argument though.

Didn't we save the MASSIVE club Everton from relegation in 1994 when we sent Sheffield United down with a late Mark Stein goal?

Your welcome lads.

I made my thoughts clear on Everton's supposedly glittering history in a past comment.

Whether we get him or not, I'm genuinely gutted as this saga has made me think about Evertonians in a totally different (suprisingly red) light.

If Everton think that John Stones will remain at their club before his current contract expires then they are delusional. Whether it's in January, next summer or the year after he will be off whether it's to us or another club where he has a realistic chance of furthering his career.

Who knows, he could be Chelsea Blue in time for tea on Tuesday. I wasn't bothered at one point, but having seen and heard how he's been treated, a 21 year old, I hope he comes our way sooner rather than later; he'd be nurtured, appreciated.

Everton fans are like Spurs fans. Think the world owes them titles, really bitter about their bigger neighbours, and think "small" clubs have taken them away, even though neither can sell out European home fixtures!

You obviously didn't pay enough attention to them before and after the FA Cup final against them. So so bitttttter.

To the Everton fan talking about club size.

Nice try. Such a great effort, yet monumental fail, like an Everton season.

Now get back in your box and stop bubbling.

On topic. Martinez has hampered a young players career by keeping him at a club who won't challenge or succeed in Europe. If he's good enough, he should be playing at a higher level than Everyon I'm afraid.

Taking club biases out of it for a moment, would anyone agree that it's probably a better thing for the league as a competition, if all of the best players were spread around a bit more, rather than concentrated at a few clubs at the top?

And if we were resisting Man Utd's bids for a player, in exactly the same way, would you attack and condemn us in the same way, or would you say 'fair play for keeping hold of your player, and not giving in'?

While a more even spread of the best players would help make the league more competitive, it would not make the league "better". It would just make every team range between mediocre to good, which is pretty close to where we are right now. A league that can have Stoke sign Shaqiri and Everton sign a highly touted Chelsea prospect for 28 million pounds, isn't exactly a league lacking in competitiveness. But it is lacking in quality and that is clearly evident in Europe. It also wouldn't help the development of the best players because the best need to play with the best to get better. I mean, sure, watching Aguero play for Sunderland might be an interesting experiment to observe for a while and it would be great for Sunderland fans, but would it be good for him? No. So while it might sound like a good idea in theory, all it would lead to is the rest of Europe getting even stronger by poaching ALL our best players, thus leaving our league even further behind in a bubble of its own hype and self-importance. And that bubble would burst very, very quickly.

Also, it could lead to Liverpool winning the league. Are you seriously willing to risk that?

But all of that is irrelevant, because that's not how the league works, does it? That's not how any of the major leagues work, and Evertons' stance, whilst beneficial to you (at least in the short term), will do nothing to change that. There's always been a food chain and unless something drastic happens - you holding onto Stones is not it - there always will be. You were at the top of that food chain once (and I'm aware how lucky we are to be there now), and you're still pretty high up there, so let's not pretend for a second that you haven't taken advantage of your status over some other team below you in the pecking order, with zero consideration over how it would affect the league or that team.

As for your second question - which carries a false assumption that I'll get to later - I think the most I'd be able to muster is a "lol united", because frankly, why would I even care? And why in the world would I compliment your club for keeping a player against his wishes? Would you have gone "good on you, Chelsea!" if we'd forced Cech to stay?

Sidenote - I know this whole ordeal can't have been pleasant for you (or anyone, really), but it would help if you'd ease up on the generalizations about us. It's difficult to have a reasonable discussion with someone who tars every Chelsea fan under the same brush a sentence after asking us to take club biases out of it. It would be like me going onto your forum and saying "we all know every Everton fan is just a Liverpool fan that's still in the closet, but club biases aside, what do you think your chances are at making top four?" and expecting a bunch of considered responses.

Also, this doesn't really matter, but if there's anyone who has been doing the attacking and condemning, it's your manager - you know, someone who actually speaks for your club, instead of a few fans on an internet forum.

I wonder if bluedylan was around when his club were bankrolled by th Moore's family, were known as the bank of England and enjoyed buying up the talent.

Agree with everything you've said. I've found the conduct of majority of Everton fans really disappointing, as I've always really respected the club and fanbase.

During this whole saga some of the paranoid delusion mixed up with sanctimonious self righteousness had been shocking, and as I said I just find it disappointing.

Having said that my last few visits to 'the people's club' I have noticed the atmosphere turn slightly. Everton are indeed a famous old big club but their days of fighting it out at the top table are long over. I mean, if bitter and paranoid middle aged men screaming handball every 30 seconds is your type of thing then Goodison on a Saturday afternoon is the place for you.

Anyway, credit to that club for holding firm. Especially after the transfer request. Quite where they think it leaves Stones is anyone's guess. Be interesting to see how we play it when the inevitable happens with Hazard and I think some of our fans will do well to remember this saga.

Oh and I think you've got your years wrong! It was 98 we saved them from relegation, sending down Bolton. 94 we saved Ipswich.

Its what scouser do best. Best if carlsberg made bitter fans they would be from Merseyside

Liked for this. I've noticed it too. Was it last year when the Chelsea fans started mockingly chanting "Handball" at Anfield because they just wouldn't.stop.appealing for it every time a ball went above knee height? What is it with Scousers and handballs?

You're right.

The same year we won the super cup v Real Madrid. Still, not bad for such a small club.

Another fun fact- we finished above them 8 years in a row previous to us 'having money' .....but lets not let that get in the way of the 'big club' dick measuring competition that they are so concerned about winning...

Is it me? Stones put in a tr because Chelsea wanted him, not Man U. If he was holding out for Man U he wouldn't have put in a tr verifying his desire for the Bridge. Or, as I said, is it me?
