What if Chelsea get relegated?

Featured Replies

Why are some of the so called fans so keen to get the team relegated? Seriously, saying that it's like declaring you like to cut yourself because like to enjoy the pain. If you are Jose fan ahead of a Chelsea fan, please leave.  If that sh1t ever happens, 9/10 current will be sold or loaned, they won't learn f* all, the only ones suffer are the fans and the club.

Don't take it so seriously. It's all either playful or whistling in the dark.

I understand that many are angry about the current state of affairs with the club and I'm no exception to this but those wishing to see us get relegated is a step too far and ridiculous so we're all better than that.

In the event that we're somehow relegated then we accept it and put all due diligence to get straight back up but despite the ineptness of this playing squad I don't think we're bad enough to get relegated.

If we're in the bottom 6 or 7 by March or April, then there will be cause of concern from many.

The Chelsea hierarchy is concerned that relegation to the Championship could cost the club millions in wages, according to reports.

The Blues are in a position that has been entirely unfamiliar during Roman Abramovich's 12-year ownership of the club, fighting relegation.

Chelsea are currently 14th in the Premier League with 20 points from 19 games, just three points above the relegation zone.

Because of their prolonged success, their lowest place finish has been sixth in 2011-12, the year they won the Champions League, Chelsea have never included a 'relegation clause' into players' contracts, according to The Times.

It is a measure that has been taken by rivals such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, such a clause exists to reduce a players wage if the unthinkable happens and the club are relegated.

The Blues' annual wage is estimated to be around £200million, with Eden Hazard the highest paid on £200,000-a-week.

After announcing a profit of £18.4m in 2014, Chelsea posted losses of £23.1m in June.

With the new massive TV deal kicking in next year, any team relegated this season will likely lose out on about £80m, but the hit would be so much bigger for Chelsea as they command a greater share of television appearances, prize money, Champions League revenue and sponsorship.

Last season Chelsea were paid just shy of £99m by the Premier League in prize and TV money - bottom club Queens Park Rangers were paid £64.8m in comparison.

Top stars would likely seek an exit from Stamford Bridge rather than face playing in the second tier of English football, but the wage bill would be high and departing players would be available for lower than market value.

The threat of relegation was a big part of the Chelsea board's decision to sack Jose Mourinho and replace him with Guus Hiddink just months after the Portuguese led the club to their first title in five years.

Whilst it is still unlikely we are going to drop, it is clear from those figures the hit on the finances would be such that we would struggle to get back to past glories immediately. We may remember the days in Division 2 with a degree of fondness, that though was 40 yrs ago, football is a completely different beast these days.

We are now half way through the season and we have 20 points. Assuming we do not improve, which I am seeing no real signs of, that would be about 40 points for the full season. Baring in mind 1 or 2 clubs down near the bottom always go on a good run of wins toward the end of the season to escape the drop, if we don't pull our act together very quickly we could well be the one to drop down in their place.

Last year 40 points - and we'd have to do incredibly poorly get that sum over the rest of the season - was good for about 14th place, and 13th place the season before that so even in such a scenario, all hope would not be lost.

If we went down Roman would have a huge bill to foot. Guess the club is learning some contract lessons here.

I'd start with performance related pay or better still non performance related pay.

I'd start with performance related pay or better still non performance related pay.

How about performance related non pay?

Roman would have saved quite a lot of money this year. Imagine it 100k a week of hazards deal is basic wage, the other 100k performance related. That is a fair few millions right there. Matic would end up owning Roman money lol.

Players wouldnt sign for us if they were offered pay for performance. That would kill any chance we have of signing quality players.

I havent seen a Chelsea team finish outside the top half of the table. And yet, Im giving serious thought about whether or not relegation would be so bad given the current state of our playing staff. Im at the point where Im fed up with getting rid of managers every 2 seasons and players purposely subverting good managers because they cant be bothered to suck it up and fight for the club.

I would rather support a properly run club than one that relies on oodles of cash to paper over cracks, doesnt support the best manager in its history, takes its cues from flunkies and yes men and puts no faith in their own academy.

If relegation ushers some changes in those regards I for one wont mind playing in the championship, no European football and possibly no trophies for a few years or trophies few and far between.

Hopefully we dont need relegation or the threat of it to make positive changes to the way the club operates.

I'm not sure if people are saying they wouldnt mind getting relegated as a coping mechanism. I think it would be a disaster personally. I like mixing it with best in Europe.

Results and performances have not been good thus season, managers are the ones that pay the price for this in modern football. Even wenger would probably be out of a job arsenal have had our same results. The only manager that could have survived those results would've been Ferguson at United, where he won countless trophies at time where managers were generally given more time anyway.

The players didn't get Mourinho sacked on purpose, they aren't playing poorly on purpose, they are out of form, down on confidence, and at the start of season, they were also low on fitness.

This season has been terrible, but I would much rather us be still in the prem next season, with the majority of this squad, roman and emanalo still at the club, and a few additions to try and get us back to the top of english football, rather than deal with sh*t storm of relegation, players being sold off, and becoming the biggest laughing stock in the history of english football.

Why anyone would want to see the club they love relegated, stripped to the core and humiliated is incomprehensible for me.
