I thought about the De Gea option last week.

My logic was. He isn't as good as what we need but nor is Kepa. He does make too many mistakes but so does Kepa (De Geas tend to be embarrassing howlers whilst Kepa's are because he has wrists that hinge open like a two dollar hooker's legs). He isn't a long term option but nor is Kepa.

He would be a free transfer and we could cash in on Kepa at a time when we need to sort our FFP out.

So if we had potential buyers for Kepa it wouldn't be the worst move. But we'd have to accept there were mistakes to come.

If we're going for a stop gap Keylor Navas will be a better option in my opinion. He has a good record in clutch moments where DDG never really has (even in his one title season he conceded a lot of goals).

However I don't think we can cash in on Kepa unless we sign two keepers (or have faith in Slonina), Bettinelli was objectively one of the worst championship keepers at Boro, he'd have us pining for Turnbull's return if he gets any significant minutes, his error in this game a taste of what we'd get.

Navas would also make sense as it would be a fairly low fee for a good but not great keeper

Although Kepa isn't world class there really isn't that many good GK's available on the market at the moment. More important areas to worry about. We aren't challenging for the league next season so make do for another year and go big next summer imo.

Absolutely. If Kepa is a bit short and not the best distributor he is a great shot stopper similar to DeGea. He is not the keeper that wins leagues or titles but still a very professional player and respected by his team mates and is used as captain as well. 

If and when we go this season with Kepa I am fine with it.

If MU dare to use Onana as Inter did that could really unlock their game and make it difficult for opponents. If they don't, we have meme's incoming.

Are we going to replace Mendy or what ?

If Kepa has no serious competition for his place, I think we will suffer again this season.

Why aren’t we going for Trubin to replace Mendy ? Young, promising talent, a 2nd Ukrainian in the squad would be good for Mudryk.

Inter seem to be after him, would be good to piss them off and hijack the deal.

he's a very good keeper     He's really not. Very good keepers do not get beaten as often as Kepa - especially from shots outside the box

i think a lot of you still can't shake the image of Kepa from his worst season

also i didn't say he was World Class

i said he was a very good keeper, which he is. He deserves another season as #1

The Golden Glove winner. Which absolutely proves that clean sheets are not an accurate measure of goalkeeper greatness.

Pretty much exactly the same season as last from the predictable Pole.

 

13) Jason Steele (Brighton): -1.5
After a strong start upon taking over from Robert Sanchez, Steele has struggled to keep pace with the better keepers.

 

14) Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal): -2.0
Actually ended 21/22 in the green so this was something of a fall from grace for a keeper who did not stand firm in the run-in.

 

15) Daniel Iversen (Leicester City): -2.1
Better than Danny Ward. But that was a low, low bar.

 

16) Edouard Mendy (Chelsea): -2.1
Brought back into the team v Nottingham Forest and he was pretty rotten, making exactly zero saves. Will surely leave this summer.

 

17) Fraser Forster (Tottenham): -2.7
Made literally zero saves at Liverpool. Zero. They lost 4-3. He didn’t fare much better at Villa. And then he was awful v Brentford.

 

18) Keylor Navas (Nottingham Forest): -2.7
Finally another clean sheet v Arsenal, though they did not test him too severely.

 

19) Robert Sanchez (Brighton): -2.8
Spanish Bob forced his way into the national team reckoning with his form after becoming the Brighton No.1, but has he really maintained those levels? He lost his Brighton place to Steele and it’s hard to argue that it’s harsh.

 

20=) Hugo Lloris (Tottenham): -4.1
After 145 caps, for the first time in almost 15 years, France have to think about a future without their No.1. That day is surely coming for Spurs too, even if the 36-year-old has a couple of years remaining on his deal.

 

20=) Dean Henderson (Nottingham Forest): -4.1
“I didn’t really want the manager to see me in training because I knew he’d probably want to keep me,” said Henderson about United boss Erik ten Hag. The Forest loanee presumably hopes he doesn’t see his stats too.

 

22) Ederson (Manchester City): -4.7
Ederson remains the ideal goalkeeper for Manchester City but still some way from being the perfect goalkeeper. City play a high line, like Liverpool, but Ederson is rather more rash than his compatriot Alisson when it comes to dealing with one-versus-ones.

 

23) Danny Ward (Leicester): -5.5
Eventually dropped.

 

24) Jose Sa (Wolves): -5.8
The leader in this metric last season has had a mare. An absolute mare.

 

25) Mark Travers (Bournemouth): -6.0
Redeemed himself somewhat when forced back between the sticks on the final day but there’s no doubt that Bournemouth would have been down if Travers had remained in goal.

 

26) Illan Meslier (Leeds): -12.4
Leeds fans love Meslier, and plenty of other clubs are apparently watching the young Frenchman, but his numbers are dire. Last season, he finished with a PSxG of -16.2, and though his defence has been wretched, his recent form has been beyond awful. Not happy about being dropped, according to Sam Allardyce, but he could hardly argue.

 

27) Gavin Bazunu (Southampton): -16.6
Maybe the Southampton goal is no place for a youngster this season. Bazunu was superb for Portsmouth in League One last year but the step up to the Premier League has been a big one for the Republic of Ireland stopper.

How much of that is inflated by his burst of form after Potter arrived? Take that period (or maybe even the Villa game alone) out and I bet he's a lot closer to the mean.

You're right though he was one of our players of the season with Thiago Silva, however if the latter retires tomorow people will forget he was involved in a season like this within weeks whereas if Kepa retires tomorow the same season would be considered his finest hour, which says everything that needs to be said.

When someone has to go to those sort of lengths to prove their point, you know they are clutching at straws..............!!

Don't need stats to tell me if a player is any good or not. When I watch them week in, week out, I form my own opinion and along with the majority, I have formed the opinion that Kepa is not a very good goal-keeper. He is okay. But if you have aspirations to win the PL and challenge the top sides, you won't do that with Kepa between the sticks.

you think all of the other goalkeepers didn't have a burst of form? or one great game? he still outperforms them overall. Ramsdale had great games and still is inferior to Kepa in the stats. 

and why would we think that this season was an exception? To me it seems he finally got back to his normal level after having a really difficult time mentally and personally. He might even improve again this season. All of these goalkeepers we are linked to aren't any better stats wise. 

I feel bad for him because whatever he does, if it is any positive, it's somehow an exception. If he kept 10 clean sheets in a row there would still be people complaining that he didn't come out and claimed a cross 

I actually think he is some sort of weird leader figure as well. He is always giving out tactical instructions. But considering we finished 10th maybe it might be wise to cut that out haha

Man City won the PL 3 times? with Ederson who is worse than Kepa. Ederson actually let in 5 goals more than he should have and Kepa saved us 5 goals that should have been goals. Therefore there is a 10 goal difference between them

 Even if the stats say Kepa is the best in the World, I wouldn’t want to keep him, I believe my eyes over the course of 40+ games, and I’m not the only one, the majority on here see it, he’s a limited keeper, its not what he saves that matters, its what he lets go through him.

I agree that stats aren't everything

but we know that the new owners like stats

that's why it makes sense that we aren't signing a new goalkeeper

i also agree that he has his weak points. But i firmly believe he is good enough for us to challenge

If the new owners are stat driven they would of noticed we probably need to spend more on our attack than the rest of the team, that’s the only reason Kepa still here 😂

If you want to feel bad for a goalkeeper it should be Mendy, he got criticised the moment his form dipped from world class levels with calls to drop him for Kepa.

Judging by how much protection Kepa is currently getting from critism if he in the unlikely event has a year like Mendy did in 2021 it would get made illegal to criticise him ever again.

Protection? I'm sure 90% of Chelsea fans acknowledge we need to upgrade Kepa, he's probably one of the most criticised players in the squad 😂

We need to upgrade him at some point but i don't think this summer is the one to do it.

Mendy personally cost us the CL semi final that season though

it's not illegal to criticise Kepa. I thought it would be nice to give a different opinion which i backed up with stats. I have doubts about Kepa too. I watch every game. He has pissed me off at times as well. I actually was surprised to see that the likes of Onana and Maignan are inferior statistically to Kepa. As i thought they would be an obvious upgrade. 

i am now convinced he deserves another season. And i respect everyone who isn't so sure about that. I'm not sure either but with a new goalkeeper you aren't guaranteed anything either.
