That Sterling Incident

The problem with the media turning this from a narrative about racism in sport, to a narrative about racism in chelsea. Is that there will be a number of fans who will refuse to change, refuse to stop saying the word y*d, because of the "us" and "them" attitude.

It needs to be a football wide issue. It needs to be broader than antisemitism and the racism (the racism that now seems to have not actually happened). Rent boy chants need to be investigated and punished. As does all anti catholic abuse against McClean. As does every club that uses the term y*d. As long as it feels "unfair" that the spotlight is on Chelsea, then it becomes very hard to make any change happen.

It doesn't feel unfair, it is unfair, here are a few examples;

1. Chelsea has been fighting antisemitism as a club for years now, not a single praise from the media, Chelsea has had no problem with racism and has King Drogba at the Bridge, the media doesn't care.
But somehow the media talks sh*t about Abramovich, the government bans him from entering the country that he has been living in for more than a decade for no real reason, and that's fine because the media thinks that something has to be wrong with Chelsea there is no other way to see it, alright then.

2.Man City is owned by a whole country that constantly bribes UEFA, that's fine, no problems there for any media to tackle, the government has open deals and is friends with some horrible countries in the middle east known for no basic human rights and where women could just some little time ago start getting drivers licence, but that is all fine for the media, the only thing that is ever on their mind is what did Abramovich do wrong and how could we possibly make him look as evil as we make Putin look.
Qatar got the most shady World Cup ever in history, no problem from the media everything is fine, but lets write about how England should boycott the World Cup in Russia because that is what we are after and thus everything that has to do with Chelsea because you know Abramovich is russian so he must be bad.

3.Spurs fan threw a banana at Aubameyang that is a foreigner, said he didn't mean anything wrong and it's already forgotten even though this is actually a bigger scandal and a real mistreatment of someone that isn't even from the Premier League, but because he's from Gabon nobody cares.
But English fans yelling at an English international is the biggest crime ever done in 2018, so huge that the man who yelled lost his job and all his info is public now and he should pretty much go live under a bridge now since he doesn't belong to the society anymore.

Now all this is also a preview of how the refs treat Chelsea players most of the time nowadays, they allow any opposition to get away with playing dirty while at the same time what happens?
Endless praise for Liverpool, easy penalties for Liverpool and for Kane from Spurs, all year long, because it's in the best interest to see finally Liverpool winning the league, and to boost the reputation of Kane, at this point Kane doesn't need to do anything but to fall down and it's a foul.

Most def......Theres no doubt at all that we have been singled out on and off the field for years and years..........you guys remember Jose going live on Sky in 14-15 where it was evident they did their best to make sure we dont run away with the title? We are being destryoed out there week in week out and you can bet your ass we will get similar treatment this sunday.......all the while their darlings benefit. Us having RA is the main issue.....city with all their corruption slept through like butter.

We may not get it from the main stream media but the Chairman of Kick It Out in his statement praised Chelsea for their work on antisemitism especially the latest video they’ve put together to advise match day stewards.

I’d rather the people that matter say it than Davey McDaveface from the redtop rags.

I remember when they had a bloke on Sky Sports talking about all the alleged atrocities Abramovich has been involved with and Russia's human rights, then we got all the comments like Chelski and Russian Oil.

When do City ever get sh*t like that? Their owners come from places with far worse human rights laws than Russia, and City are much much dirtier than Chelsea ever have been. FFP is nothing but a scam and FIFA will not do anything out of the goodness for football, it's always out of money, their regulation has been profitable for dirty reasons and City are right at the top of it.

how does that stuff or even the constant use of the n word help anything? double standards r us!

Regarding the use of "y*d" - whether or not it's antisemitic depends on whether it's being used in a derogatory context or not. So when Tottenham fans sing "y*d army" it's not derogatory and not antisemitic. It's not that complicated.

I'm not sure what exactly our fans are supposed to have sung last night but assuming they used "y*d" in a derogatory way then will be interpreted as antisemitic, which would make it a really stupid thing to do in the current climate. I expect the fans would have meant it more in an anti-Tottenham way rather than antisemitic, especially considering our Jewish owner, but it's still completely idiotic.

this is one of my points

to me PERSONALLY if you're a jew/minority but sing/chant/broadcast racist stuff how can it ever solve anything..

its fine to be racist or use racist terminology as long as you are the same is definitely making the whole issue un fixable.

If you're black is it ok to use derogatory race related language? PERSONALLY i do not think its ok at all. My gs mum would kick her daughters arse if she used that word whatever the context!

lots of double standards on these issues but its a minefield

Plenty of PC zealots on here. They’re so convinced of their own moral righteousness that they get in a tizzy if others have differing views.

lol. ive been warned

And of course, the paragon of virtue that is Car Park Collymore has charged in, claiming that anyone who's attended a match in the past 40 years is "facilitating racism". I'm giving serious thought to stopping by a solicitors' firm on my way home from work on Monday to make an enquiry.

If the bloke who abused me at Winchester vs Moneyfields over the Paris incident says that he "wants a word", I'll insist that it's in the vicinity of the club chairman. An entire football team can vouch for my whereabouts for the Sterling incident; ditto with 1100 miles (the distance from Winchester to Budapest) for yesterday.

Most things that has to do with Russia is a no no in Eng.......but them arabs man.....they love them. They are so pure, and without flaws.......and their endless Money and oil tastes good. Lots of deals, lots of arms deals etc. Its beyond pathetic......city has done no wrong, they have made footy better, they have created lots of jobs, they are clean all the way and may it long continue. We on the other hand.......the difference is not only staggering, its a pure sign of double standards, and they aint even hiding it or ashamed.......

The word Y*d is used a lot by many fans, even Tottenham, but it's only derogatory in a certain context and in the context that Chelsea fans allegedly used it last night, it is.

As someone said, you would think our fans would have some more sense. The spotlight is obviously on us now, and the media are going to report everything we do for the next few weeks because it's a juicy narrative, but either way, it's not acceptable. Antisemitism is something that has been growing rapidly in the last few years, and it's not even exclusive for just one of the political spectrums, there have been a few synagogues attacked in the West alone due to anti-semitic hatred so I can see why and how people are offended by this, particularly Jewish people.

I really don't know what the take is on using Y*d anymore, but it's certainly not nice in the context our fans were using. We are going to have to cut this sh*t out, I understand the hypocrisy I do, I know if we say anything like "poof" we'll get hammered for it in the media, while other fans can call us rent boys whenever they want. But the fact is the chant was pretty offensive to a group of people.

Israel is our ally and there is a subtle taboo placed on society in talking about the peoples that make up Israel and their linguistic origins, although not necessarily racist there is some sensitivity as it tends to feed into the narrative of whether Israel should be a Jewish controlled state which is complicated and certainly political. The word y*d derives from y*ddish formerly spoken by Eastern European Jews whereas in Israel they speak Hebrew. The Jewish refugees that came in large numbers to the UK after WWII spoke y*ddish as well as other European languages. Not sure how it got shortened though certainly is used by our lot to insult. I seriously doubt it is just Chelsea that use this expression and would expect most other London team's fans use it too.

I remember one match at SB where they were impressively singing 'y*d army' back at the Shed and remember thinking they had won that duel just like singing at Upton Park, 'we hate those bastards in claret and blue' and they reply, 'we are those bastards in claret and blue.'

On another occasion away at Liverpool, five of us blindly went into a pub near the ground, it was a bit risky with broken glass all over the pavement yet we had a drink and I picked up a group of about 5 also singing quietly and harmonically (actually insidiously once you realised the topic) about gassing the Jews. They didn't seem to care and didn't look particularly hard yet no-one challenged them. I got the feeling they were Chelsea though no colours or badges.

Yeah. Collymore’s about as suited to moral lecturing as King Herod was to babysitting.

At yet certain pundits who have been given air time over this incident are allowed to rant on in a completely unbalanced fashion knowing that the presenters live in such a climate of PC fear, that they won’t dare to question the feasibility of their claims.

And the faces on these presenters when announcing “ new Chelsea Race Storm stories”

I wouldn’t expect them to be full of the joys of spring but anyone would think the accused had been eating children alive.

Privately, most journalists and commentators probably realise that the whole thing is ludicrously overblown, but they have to tow the line. One questioning comment to the the likes of Collymore and they risk getting it in the neck from some twat on social media and loosing their own jobs.

It's the context like I said, a lot of is down to Jew-hatred whereas a lot of people won't even know what a "Y*d" really is.

It's not nice anyway and our fans need to start being more respectful and wary especially given the circumstances, I wouldn't sing a song calling people "They're all f***ing y*ds!", sadly this doesn't help the stereotype of Chelsea fans with racism and bigotry. The worst part is the good stuff our club has done to combat antisemitism, LGBT and KickOutRacism won't go noticed, but the bad stuff will, as is life I'm afraid.

Sorry but can I just say "Car Park Collymore" has had me in stitches for about 10 minutes.

I’ve read that the apparent chant was the famous Tottenham Hotspur chant, you all know how it goes, I’m not sure if that’s true obviously, but if so this entire media frenzy brought about by reports from Dan Levene and friends (least said about Dan the better, a four letter word springs to mind) is completely unnecessary and they should be taken to task for it.

If I’m wrong, then I’ll fully condemn the chanting, but there is a clear double standard when spurs fans sing about y*ds on a week to week basis, I don’t care if they sing it about themselves, it’s not right. What’s happening right now is a media witch-hunt and as I’ve said before, attacking a single club does absolutely nothing to combat racism, infact it makes light of the situation, because it makes it seem like a club only issue, something people are failing to realise. I think it’s due to tribalism in football, becuase we’re as hated as Leeds used to be, if not more, so it’s easy to deflect the issue on to one club and completely forget a banana was thrown by a fan of a certain media darling club just a week ago.

From what I can guess it's probably one of the songs about Spurs, maybe "The sh*t from Tottenham Hotspur went to Rome to see the Pope" ?

I was at my sons recently when he had the Bournemouth v Arsenal game on. Sometime during the 1st half I went into the lounge to speak to him, & at that moment heard the Arsenal support singing the song mentioned.
Don't recall anyone or the media making an issue of that at the time, or next day in the Press?.
( Maybe everyone was shocked to actually hear Arsenal fans singing?? ).
