Why can’t we Sell?

Featured Replies

I’m beginning to find it very frustrating that we seem unable to sell any of or unwanted Squad players.
Why do we only seem to be able to negotiate loan deals for these players, there appears to be plenty of interest but nobody wants to cough up the cash for them.

Yet when we try to buy a player the price is always through the roof, We need to toughen up.

I appreciate that in the past we’ve sold players that we’ve gone on to regret but that’s just Football, some of the players we are talking about, Rahman, Drinkwater, Bakayoko Batshui etc are never going to feature for us in the future.

Apologies if this has already been done.

I would suggest you have kind of answered your own question, the problem is that when we buy these players they get the Chelsea premium added (or have historically) and then to top it off we pay big wages.... therefore when it comes to sell we have a player that is worth £20mil and should be on £60k per week, who was actually bought for £40 mil and on £120 per week, we want to recoup as much money as possible on the original price and the player wont want to half his wages

*values are made up to show the point before anyone starts moaning about who is on £120 etc etc

I suspect you are someone who doesn't realise we get paid to loan a player out. So loans do generate revenue. We loan when no club will pay the value. Why sell a player for 5m when we can loan them for 2m a season for the next 3 years and potentially see their value increase.

You also seem to be confused as why there aren't any clubs willing to spend millions on a player who we think is sh*t.

Loan deals bring in cash and allows us to maintain a steady transfer fund. Loans also help us subsidize wages so even more money can be saved.

Arguably, we have theoretically the best run football club model. Our players generate money through loans or transfers. We buy them young, develop them and sell to the highest bidder or loan them out to teams that suit their characteristics.

I bet 80% of teams wishes they were run like us

It's the wages. We pay premium wages, they won't. Can't force a player to take a paycut and end his contract early so we loan.

And covid making 90% of teams skint. The end.

So how does this work?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8814189/Antonio-Rudiger-tried-leave-Chelsea-summer-says-Germany-boss-Joachim-Low.html

Salary is a big factor, but Covid is a big factor. Even Real/Barca couldn't do transfers, most of the Spanish clubs aren't buying. The same could be said about mid-lower clubs in Germany, Italy etc, and that's most likely our surplus players will end up. No top team will touch them, the teams who are interested couldn't afford them. I'm sure we aren't the only clubs struggling to offload players. The theory about we couldn't buy Partey because we couldn't offload Drinkwater or whoever else is just conspirarcy, we did our business early, and never liked with him until Arsenal stepped in the last 24 hours, even at that stage the rumour is pretty weak.

I don't see how this counteracts the argument that clubs are skint.

If Chelsea can't get the price they want for Rudiger they hang onto him. Rudiger tried to leave but the club said you are under contract and nobody is interested at your true value.

He is an international quality defender and probably worth £40-50m. Maybe more I don't know. If nobody came in for him we keep him for cover if injuries occur.

I think the thread is taking a narrow view of the transfer market under Covid. Overall the market was depressed this year. That is apart from Chelsea who had a war chest as a result of the sale of Hazard and Morata etc and the ban. We cannot view the ability of other clubs to buy through the glasses of a cashed up Chelsea in the middle of  depressed market.

It may also be the case that Chelsea have bought at lower prices this window because of Covid. Chilwell for £45m? Maguire cost Utd £70m or so. Ziyech for £33m? I know we haven't seen him yet but the guy tore us to shreds last season in the Champions League. Werner would surely have cost more than £48m any other time. Maybe not. He hasn't set the world on fire just yet but top German strikers don't normally come cheap. Maybe Havertz would have costs more next season.

Time will tell but generally I think Chelsea perform better in the transfer market than any other club and just got stuck with a few too many players because the market was depressed this year.
