He wasn't in the wall. He was the other side of Caicedo, more than 1m from the wall.

Then he pushes Caicedo sideways and is now within 1m of the wall (and Eze still hasn't got to the ball yet)

Clear breach of this "1m" rule, even when the ref doesn't give a foul against Guehi for the shove on Caicedo, which he should give in my opinion, as the goal doesn't happen if Caicedo stays where he is (the ball would have hit him). The ball goes through the gap that Guehi creates with the push.

Oh right, I've got it now, thanks for the explanation mate, 👍

I can remember when the rule was introduced and normally the ref will tell the players that the6 can’t be within 1 metre . In this instance the ref missed the potential so play just carried on.

The key also is that there in this instance was in effect two walls ( only called a wall if 3 players are together) .

Irrespective there was a foul as well so to be fair it being disallowed was correct

Our very own Sexyfootball has provided an excellent explanation of what happened. Yes, it was a foul anyway 👍

I'm sure they would have got away with it, if Caicedo hadn't resisted so strongly. If he'd gone over immediatley they would have scored, because Geihu wouldn't have ended up too close. And sanchez didn't muck it up, he had virtually no chance.

IFAB don’t actually define what a “wall ” is in terms of proximity but three defenders have to be in one !

Meant to say it could be argued that the push meant that at the point the free kick was taken Cacedio had joined the wall ( look at his right foot)

The goal was correctly disallowed and the law correctly enforced, but that is not enough for the media who are painting us as lucky, and condemning the VAR intervention as 'pedantic and petty' (Steinberg in the Guardian). He also argued that the shot was so well struck that Guéhi's infringement made no difference, ignoring the point that the shot probably would not have made it through the wall without Guéhi's actions, which pretty much doubled the size of the gap Ezé had to find.

There's also the fact that Eze was fully aware of what Guehi was going to do and that is why he decided to smash it.

If you do that any where else on the pitch a foul would be given against you, you can’t just push someone over when they aren’t even contesting the ball. Go and play American football!!

All the pushing and pulling and wrestling that goes on in the box when there's a corner really pi**es me off. Not very often a pen gets given and usually ends up with the defending team being awarded a free kick. If I was a manager I'd give 'em a right bollocking for wasting a good opportunity. The refs/VAR/ rule makers should try to clamp down on it. Years ago you just marked your man. Now you can slam dunk him to the floor.

You are not going long if your attacker is gittens, neto and pedro. This is where you need Delap.

Exactly. And that's where Maresca should change his tactics. If he can.

Actually this season they are supposed to be clamping down on all that. You can't do that anywhere else on the pitch and get away with it.

Don't seem to be doing anything about so far though.

Refs haven't got the message yet !! ..

"Premier League referees will award more penalties for holding in the 2025-26 season, according to Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb.

PGMOL will look to crack down on grappling in the box during set-pieces with stricter measures ahead of the new English top-flight season, which kicks off on Friday.

Based in feedback from Premier League captains, players and clubs, Webb said there were “a few too many examples of players clearly pulling people back”, adding that these were not being penalised.

Webb said: “The feedback that we had is that there’s just a few too many examples of players clearly pulling people back impacting their ability to move to the ball or some clear extreme actions are not being penalised.""
