Star Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Ivanovic what a 'kin debut. It's been a long time since i've seen a Chelsea player make such an impact on his debut and how he reminds me of one of my all time favourite's in Albert Ferrer - anyone agree ?
loz Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I have been looking forward to his debut for a long time and when it happens I can't bloody see it as there were no streams and STV didn't show the highlights package either (and I couldn't get it to work on the ITV website)! As such I would be interested in hearing how he performed. £10m to sit in the stiffs this long is ridiculous.
South London Blue Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 It's a shame really, I wanted to see how he debuted but I didn't realise ITV were showing the highlights until about 3 minutes ago meaning I missed the Chelsea game. Shame about Man City though eh? :D
TomP Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) I haven't seen the Pompey match yet - but in the pre-season match against Milan, I thought Ivanovic looked like the absolute dogs b*@#$cks. I think with him and Bosingwa in the squad, Paolo Ferreira's days might well be numbered - especially as we still have Beletti as well. I've always been a fan of Paolo, and he's still a great defender, but he never was, and never will be a Cafu-type fullback, which is what Scolari's system is built around. dkw Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 he was superb last nigt. an excellent debut, very much in the mold of chappy. hard into the tackle and made the right decision pretty much every time. plus, he looks very comfortable on the ball and looks a pretty useful passer too. all in all, looks good and i hope he stays.
Lofty Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I'm glad to hear it. I saw very little of him on ITV's highlight's apart from the block/crap pass that led to Kalou's goal.
dkw Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I'm glad to hear it. I saw very little of him on ITV's highlight's apart from the block/crap pass that led to Kalou's goal. the full match was shown on chelsea tv at 10, and he really impressed me. he was up against a tricky, speedy winger and had him on toast. showed some skill on the ball at times too, and looked very confident. just before the game started he was telling drogs what he expected of him when he was taking throw ins....
Gem Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Robben's competitive debut against Blackburn was a bit special, even took the spotlight away from Guddy and his hattrick...! I hope we don't let Ivanovic go - JT, Ricky, Alex and him... what a choice.
blizeH Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I still haven't seen any highlights of this match yet, was really looking forward to watching Ivanovich on his debut too. He looked great in pre-season, but that counts for nothing so I didn't think too much of it.
Tim Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Thing is, with Bosingwa also looking mustard and costing a cool 16 million, Ivanovic will never be first choice right back, which is what a player of that cost and calibre will want to be and rightly so. I just don't see why we signed him and think he will go in Jan, which is a shame, but somewhat inevitable I feel.
Dorset Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 First saw Ivanovic for a full 90 minutes in the Reserves and was just as impressed with him then as I was last night. He really is a strong presence, whether at RB or as a CB, and even when every first choice back four player is available he must surely be, at the very least, on the bench for the Premiership games. There also has to be a temptation to include him somewhere in a 4-2-3-1 and, in the prolonged absence of Essien, as one of the covering two would be a good bet. He does have a reputation, as a central defender, for wanting to get forward at every opportunity and, if he turns out to be that versatile, you can see why we didn’t want to let him go to AC Milan.
byatt Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 If he's impressed the majority of people on here then he must've had a good game, hopefully he can build from it and just add to the tasty competition for places we've already got
bennyboy1976 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I was down there last night, and the majority of us blues fans were saying how well he did. Positionally he was spot on, very difficult to get round, and his distribution was good, however he did not go on too many overlaps as such and Bosigwa is more suited to this side for that reason. We have (for the fisrt time in years) a very confortable situation at Right back, with options.
abramovich Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Just watched the full match vs Pompey and I must say the player who impressed me the most was Ivanovic. The guy is a monster. Big,strong, quick on the ball, very good in the air and he gave away nothing defensively. Combative player, full of energy and very good positional awareness. I have to say it occured to me that on those several occasions when Bosingwa was muscled off the ball in the past the Serb would have probably come out a winner. It may be premature but he looks a better defender than our new Portuguese fullback, too while Bosingwa looks probably a better option going forward. In any case, it was great to see how deep our defensive options are.
TheWestwayWonder Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 This is really pleasing news. The fact that the praise is so universal, I hope, shouldnt be lost on anyone in the club. Im sure Scolari seeing what he is capable of when given just ONE first team opportunity will start to sweat less over the loss of Riccy. Am I mistaken in believing that he played CB for Lokomotiv? If thats the case, and he can fill in both at full back and half back, then he should be among the first names penciled in on the bench every week. Paulo and Belletti dont have that kind of versatility and physicality to back it up if they ever had to go centrally, IMO I think with the fact that JT (owing to his style) and Riccy (owing to his age) are begining to show a little wear these days, this kid might have a really important role to play this year. We have almost 50 matches still to play in all comps, bare minimum. Sad to say it, but our squad is getting up there, and when you have capable kids like Ivan or Obi, then guys like Lamps and Terry shouldnt be playing in early round cup matches against opposition we can brush aside (ok, maybe not like Pompey, but the point stands)

motorhead Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 saw the game on chelsea tv and he was supurb.an exelent debut and im sure we will see a fair bit of him this season
Ballack & Blu Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Proves vidic was right in his assessment of the player, but thankfully didn't blow that much smoke out of his arse,or he would be a red by now,and our loss
ozboy Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 For those that did see the game, how is Drogs coming on? Right now we need him more than Ivanovic although always glad of new players coming through.

Think that you are right on that Tim. However, it could all depend on how long Paulo and Belletti are going to be around. I know that Paulo just signed a new contract, but he could just use that to get a good contract elsewhere, or just sit on the bench and end his career her as our 3rd string. But let's imagine he leaves. Then we have Belletti, who I feel could go, or again sit and be 3rd string. So if he were to leave too, then we'd have Bosingwa and Ivanovich fighting it out for RB. Or even if either of Paulo or Juliano stay, I'd still imagine Ivanovich would be ahead of them both Chappie was a great player, and i'd love it if we had a new Chappie on our hands. Yet to see Ivanovich play a full game, unfortunately, but small amounts I have seen he looks too good to be sitting on the bench Scott
blizeH Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Belletti has actually done a very good job of filling in at DM this season, I for one wouldn't want to see him leave.
loz Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I must be alone in thinking this but I thought Belletti was all over the place when he played as a defensive midfielder against Spurs. I was amazed when people started voting for him as MOTM and saying he had had a fine game.

I was amazed when people started voting for him as MOTM and saying he had had a fine game.king full backI' m with you on Belletti v Spuds. Like him as a squad player though, behind Boswingwa in the pecking order as an attacking full back obviously. As far as Ivanovic goes i'm convinced he could play the 'Maka role' thus questioning the need for Minero in my book. But all in all the defensive options are endless and not a word about losing Gallas from anyone ! Alex is top drawer cover for Terry ( in his mould) and Ivanovic seems like a few have said 'too good for the bench o... The good thing is if Terry and Carvalho were out for a period Alex and Ivanovic would do for me !
bjd Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 still waiting for more pics of your new missus Star....
evissy Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Last season we were talking about the need for a world class right side fullback. Now with Bosingwa and Ivanovic we seem to have two(?) wc fullbacks. Belletti and Paolo are useless now. Paolo has no other chance but to change scenery Im afraid. So we lack now able wide players and strikers...though not that badly.
