April 28, 20179 yr So that's me finally home, I'm going to struggle through work tomorrow but it was soooooo worth it. Wow is all I can say. They've nailed it again. If you're a fan of Marvel, or just guardians of the galaxy or even just sci-fi you have to see this. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'm not going to say too much about the details. The comedy is brilliant, just like the first one, the soundtrack - brilliant again, emotional at the right stages to me personally (they struck the balance between that and the lightheartedness very well IMO). The time flew by, I looked at my watch thinking we were 30 minutes in to it and it turns out there was actually less than 30 minutes left, broke my heart but signs of a good film. I think I'm in love with Gamora & Rocket is the most ingenius character, even the attachment you feel towards baby groot with his lack of language is powerful. I'm a huge Marvel movie fan and an even bigger GOTG alone fan, but in terms of sequels this is right up there. In the words of StarLord 'There's a little pee coming out of me right now' 11/10.

The first GOTG was juvenile, plotless garbage, covered up by a great soundtrack. I don't know why people go crazy over it. The new one looks more of the same. The worst Marvel film by far. I shall be avoiding it.

By all accounts the other marvel films are beginning to follow suit, the new Thor has taken a lot of it's themes from Guardians judging by the trailer (The music/the humour). Seen as it's the standalone film that struggles the most in recent times. It's getting rave reviews from most places, to say it's the worst marvel movie is ridiculous considering it's in the 5 highest overall grossing Marvel film so far. I think it'll move higher on the back of vol.2. In your opinion perhaps it is, but as a sweeping statement is well wide of the mark. Also you mention plotless but you're a fan of John Wick where the main storyline is they steal his dog so he kills everyone, I just find that funny haha!
April 28, 20179 yr The Handmaiden is absolutely brilliant. I hadn't read much about it but it's from the guy who directed Old Boy so I knew it was going to be interesting, but I was not expecting that. Definitely not juvenile, plotless garbage. And definitely not something to take the family to.
May 2, 20179 yr I went to see Alien - The Director's Cut last week at the local cinema, because I'd only seen the first Alien movie on VHS and I'd never seen the Director's Cut, so I figured I'd go revisit what was probably the scariest movie of my childhood and experience it on the big screen. Obviously it wasn't nowhere near as scary as it was when I watched it about 30 years ago, but it does hold up VERY well after all these years. It's been over 20 years since I've seen the third movie and I just want to know if it's as bad as everyone says it is. Because I remember it as a proper ending to the saga. I mean, the fourth one was just a big F.U. to the fans and Prometheus was a perfect example of how you mess up a perfectly good sci-fi series by adding completely needless "mythology" to make it seem more "epic". Ok, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica went a little further with that concept, but Prometheus was still a mighty fine trainwreck of trying to bring a little "2001: A Space Odyssey" in to the series, but making it something more like "Leprechaun in Space"...
May 2, 20179 yr The Final Girls - fantastic horror comedy which is a huge throwback to Friday the 13th 8/10

May 3, 20179 yr Started to watched the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven because it's on Netflix. I thought it was a more lighthearted take on the story... Mainly because of the casting of Chris Pratt but no, it's pretty much a straight up remake. Despite a pretty excellent cast including Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawk and Vincent D'Onofrio I got an hour in and was just bored. Seeing as there was still another hour and a bit to go I just gave up on it. Also watched M. Night Shamalamadingdong's newest film Split. Got more than a little 10 Cloverfield Lane vibe to it but was a pretty enjoyable watch with James McAvoy chewing up the scenery throughout.

It's funny I liked Prometheus, granted nowhere as suspenseful as Alien yet the story about the search for man's origins only to find they had arrived on a military base of some advanced human beings and then have to deal with the resident aliens made it an interesting watch. I also liked the Riddick movies.
May 10, 20179 yr I went to the advanced screening of the new King Arthur film starring Charlie Hunham, I had high hopes for the film going in to it as I'm a big fan of his work. It does have quite a world of Warcraft film feel to it so if you didn't enjoy that I'm not so sure you'll enjoy this. However I was a huge fan of that film and I'm a big fan of this one as well. The story was solid and the humour was very good throughout as well. A lot of recognisable faces throughout the film as well. The fight scenes I really enjoyed, my only slight complaint would be the over use of slow motion in the film, although I do understand why it was used in the scenes it was, I just think it was a little too often. The story felt a little rushed as well, I felt they coulda maybe split it in to a 2 part film to expand more on the lore of everything, but it still flows pretty well. it does allow for potential trilogy/franchise quite well though, although it's getting hammered by critics I believe which is a bit harsh. So we'll see how it does at the box office I suppose! 7.5/10
May 13, 20179 yr @Edinburgh Blue I think this is the movie with the Beckham cameo. If so Beckham sounds awful from the clip I saw. Hopefully the rest is better.
May 15, 20179 yr Gifted 7/10 Not usually my type of viewing but I quite enjoyed it. Family film with good interaction between a seven year old child and her guardian.
May 15, 20179 yr Watched Get Out on Saturday night. Really, really good. I can see why it has received a lot of praise. Quite suspenseful but a fair bit of humour thrown in as well, definitely worth a watch. Went to the cinema to see Alien Covenant last night. It's very much a sequel to Prometheus. If you haven't seen Prometheus then you're going to struggle with this one because a lot of what happens leans heavily on that film. It's still quite dialogue heavy, throwing out big questions without necessarily answering them but the xenomorphs are back and there's a lot more action/violence this time. It's not like the sci fi horror tone of the original Alien film, probably closer to the tone of James Cameron's Aliens. If you're a fan of the Alien franchise I would recommend seeing it, it's a good addition to the series but the original still stands head and shoulders above the rest.
May 15, 20179 yr Sausage Party, absolutely bonkers Film loved it Edited May 15, 20179 yr by Bobbywoodhogan
May 15, 20179 yr The Nice Guys A Shane Black film starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. If you like any of Black's previous films, such as the brilliant Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, you'll love this. The script is sharp and the shenanigans will have you creasing. 8/10
May 15, 20179 yr Watched Christine on a long flight yesterday. It's a true story of a frustrated and depressed news reporter in the 1970s who attempts to commit suicide live on air. The first hour or so is very slow moving but the last hour, as her behaviour starts to become more erratic, is very griping. The acting and direction is excellent.
May 30, 20179 yr Think I'll go and see this film when it is released. Film tells the story off Archibald McIndoe a plastic surgeon who practised in WW2 and operated on RAF crew members who been burned. A brilliant surgeon. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/21/story-maverick-ww2-guinea-pig-surgeon-told-big-screen-first/ Hopefully the film makes a reference to McIndoe's cousin - another New Zealander - Harold Gillies who did similar work in WW1 and worked at the Queen's Hospital (now Queen Mary's) in Sidcup. This year is the centenary of the opening of the Queen's Hospital. Would be great if a film about Gillies is made. Gillies is recognised is as one of the founding-fathers of modern day plastic surgery.
May 30, 20179 yr My paternal great grandmother was one of the first women to be treated by Archie after being caught in a bomb blast during the blitz in London in WWII. I watched the Damned United the other night for the second time about Brian Clough during his Derby and Leeds period. Very enjoyable if you haven't seen it already.

June 6, 20179 yr Wonder Woman It was make or break for the DCEU. Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman were poor films and were savaged by the critics. It all came down to a little known Israeli actress and a female director who had only made one indy film. The result? A smash-hit. Wonder Woman is the best DC film since the Dark Knight trilogy, better even than such Marvel stinkers such as GOTG, Thor 2, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Ant Man. Gal Gadot is the heart and soul of the film as Wonder Woman, who is earnest, loving and naive. Her relationship with Chris Pine's American spy Steve Trevor glues the film together, during the film's WWI setting. The action is thrilling and there are many light comedic touches. The film clearly takes inspiration from Superman I, especially that scene in the alleyway when Diana and Steve are confronted by a couple of gun-wielding thugs. A scene where Diana bravely marches out on to no-mans-land is the highlight of the film. The last 15 mins or so is the usually CGI-heavy stuff that comic book movies fall back on nowadays, but this is the DCEU's crowning gem. Over to you, Justice League... 9/10

Introducing batman, I know he needs no introduction to comic readers, but this was not just for comic-readers. Intro to wonder-woman and getting her involved, aqua-man, flash, cyborg teasers. Lex Luthor's intro (though I hated Luthor's potrayal). Add to that some amazing easter eggs, Darkseid's Omega sign on the field when Batfleck is looking over the field in the post apoclyptic world. Darkseid's minions (the flying thingies). Superman going rogue, Flash warning Batfleck. And in general the acting, (the level of hopelessness, desperation) of Batfleck's batman (the fact that he kept robin's costume as a reminder tells us so much about this batman). All in all, I loved the movie. Yes, it had some issues with logic/motives, but I am willing to overlook it. Suicide Squad was a proper dud. No 2 ways about it. But, I honestly feel, DoJ was a good movie. Marvel used 4/5 intro movies and then made an Avenger. DoJ did not have that luxury.

I actually like Batman Vs Superman- but only the Ultimate Edition released on DVD and blue-ray, not the version seen in cinemas. You get to see more of Clark Kent. But the general critic consensus is that it was bad. I wasn't crazy about Lex Luther's portrayal either. You've made a good point about BVS not having an intro movie, though you could argue that Man of Steel was. Suicide Squad was toilet. So so bad. Edited June 6, 20179 yr by Blueblur

Quite honestly, dont care much about anyone but Batman (in DC) and Captain/Wolverine (Marvel). Hence, my fear with DoJ was if Affleck would do justice with Batman, and by god, I think he was tremendous. Yes, the sample size is way too small, but I will go and say it none the else, I think he will go on to be one of the best Batmans ever. Probably below Keaton, but will be better than Bale. (For me those 2 are the best Batmans). Ya, you are probably right with MoS, but I doubt if it was made with an intention of making a DoJ. The link of those scenes seemed so forced.

I actually think those scenes worked well. They needed to give Batman a motivation to face off with Superman, and what better motivation than Superman destroying part of the city he lives in and one of his offices, whilst fighting with Zod? I really like those scenes at the beginning of DoJ. Thought Affleck nailed it.
