I enjoyed arrival, a very good film with a lot of depth, but a massive flaw that really annoyed me.

I thought it concentrated too much on the big 'reveal' at the end and was full of holes....

Spoilers...

How did she crack that 'language' so quick? and what did the Aliens actually want in return??

What annoyed me was if the aliens were so advanced, but needed humanity so much in the future why didn't they just learn our language.

I really enjoyed arrival, but this is an excellent point.

SPOILERS!

I got the feeling that it wasn't suppose to happen as quickly as it seemed, but the director and the editor just failed to portray the passage of time properly. I'm not saying that interpretation lets them off the hook, but I didn't think it was the movie's bigggest flaw either. I just wished that it had been more "intellectual" and have scrapped the action (bomb, etc.) It felt like they had a script for a certain type of movie, but the producers and production company wanted certain alterations to make it a more marketable. It could have been a much smarter movie. I'm not saying they went all Independence Day, but it had a lot of unfulfilled potential.

Yeah agree about the bomb, square peg in a round hole for that film.

arrival is such a deep profound film but idk why i didn't really connect with it, my favorite villeneuve film is still incendies

talking about villeneuve can't wait for this one holy smokes

It better be good or I'm going after everyone involved. First one is my favourite ever film.

I work with someone who's daughter is involved in the sound production for the new alien film and she reckons it's amazing, more like the original film than any of the others, atmospheric and scary rather than pew pew action.

I saw Moonlight earlier tonight. Very solid storytelling and good cinematography. Boyhood and this are two very different kind of movies, but Moonlight reminded me of it because of the subject matter. Although in this one there's an actual story arc instead of just stuff that happens. Don't get me wrong, Boyhood is a very solid movie, but it's closer to being a documentary rather than a traditional fiction narrative. In Boyhood the power of it was in the fact that it took so many years to shoot and the central characters (and their actors) age accordingly during the shoot. In Moonlight there's three actors who portray the main character and it's not often (if ever) that I've seen this kind of setup work this well. It's not quite as great as all the five star reviews suggest, but it's not far off. Very solid.

I went to see this recently and loved it. There are a few cliches in the story and Chiron's transformation for the final act was a bit of a stretch, but the way it's presented is excellent. I was a little disappointed that Juan (I think that's his name - Teresa's boyfriend) wasn't in it for longer, but on the other hand I think the final act would have been very confusing if he was still around... I also like the fact it didn't tie the story up with a nice bow at the end; the film is supposed to be a slice (or several slices) of one man's life and few things in life are ever resolved perfectly. I honestly have no idea whether Chiron continues on his current path or decides to go back to being his 'real' self, which would have been the typical Hollywood ending.

moonlight is amazing, that kitchen scene completely floored me

that's the thing with juan, mahershala ali gave such a masterful performance that you can still feel his character's presence and impact on chiron's life long after he's gone

imo the oscars so white thing last year was just some liberal sjw bs but if he doesn't win tonight man feck the academy

Watched Florence Foster Jenkins with the wife on Friday and despite my initial misgivings, thoroughly enjoyed it. Streep superb as always but Hugh Grant and the bloke off The Big Bang were excellent too.

What do you think is that flaw?

Is this the Jodie Foster film? I'd give this a try.

This year's Oscars got almost everything right. Except that Captain Fantastic was not recognized that much. I think Fence only got nomination because of Denzel.
