I don't get South Park. I've watched a few episodes, and the humour just doesn't appeal to me. What I really, really don't get though is that South Park is much more obviously offensive than Family Guy, and Family Guy get's banned?

The warning at the beginning of South Park says that 'This programme should not be viewed by anyone.' Which gives them some pretty decent cover.

I think I've grown up with South Park, so that might be why I like it more, but when I was younger it was just puerile, which I loved, and as I've grown older and older, it's grown more satirical with me. Some of the social commentary it gives is brilliant, which you just can't get in Family Guy. Like when they had an episode about how the Japanese were killing Whales and Dolphins... then the 4 kids find out that it's all because America blamed Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Whales and Dolphins... so they decided to convince the Japanese that it was actually a doctored photo and it was actually Chickens and Cows who did it. So now they just kill Chickens and Cows in their thousands, like NORMAL people.

I can't imagine anything close to that coming from Family Guy.

I think it's the subtltey of Family Guy that I love so much compared to South Park. South Park is very in your face.

I do agree though, Family Guy isn't as politically driven as South Park is, but I don't think Seth MacFarlane wants it to be that, it's just all very random, it doesn't make you think too much, you just watch it and enjoy every second.

EDIT: However, a few mates are all really into South Park, and they all say the same thing - the actual episodes aren't THAT good most of the time, it's just they nearly always have one utterly hilarious moment that you'll laugh at for days and days. That's not a bad thing, it's just that Family Guy episodes always seem to have more of a story to them, no matter how random those stories are.

The jokes in Family Guy are nothing to do with the storyline though, they're completely interchangeable with stuff like "you think that's bad, what about the time when..." It has it's place, but I couldn't watch more than one, maybe two episodes in one go.

I think your main problem with South Park is the episode where Cartman said that ginger kids have no souls.

My main problem with SP is the episode with Mr. Garrison, Slave and a rat named Mr. Lemmywinks.

:P That was hilarious. It was a hamster though, wasn't it? Don't forget the tube used to insert Lemmywinks. Also, I believe Paris Hilton went up there in another episode. :)

Definitely a rat, check the tail. I wish I didn't know this...

Now I have to go toss lunch

:P Poor choice of phrase there.

It does look like one, but I thought it was supposed to be a pet hamster.

OK I feel better now. Please note the tail

South Park is a great example of Cult TV. Not for everyone, but a devoted following.

Anyone mention "Monty Python's Flying Circus" yet?

I think that has to be one of the most cult tv series ever...but when does it become mainstream, and no longer cult?

I can't stand Monty Python any more. It was vaguely amusing when I saw it as a hokey English comedy, but now it seems to be an internationally-renowned piece of film. I've had all the unfunny parts of Monty Python quoted at me a million times by various idiots and as a result I now consider it completely unwatchable. It's been completely and utterly murdered by an over-enthusiastic media.

I agree with that up to a point. I was a big fan of Monty Python when it was first broadcast, and eagerly awaited each weekly episode, bought the albums, and later on went to watch the films.

I've got most of Monty Python's stuff on DVD, and some of it seems very dated now. I find it difficult to enjoy even the classic sketches nowadays, as they've been shown or discussed so many times on TV, so I'm holding back on watching for a while in the hope that if I wait long enough it will seem fresh again.

Are you saying Monty Python is dead? Is that a dead Monty Python or is it just nailed there?

I can still happily watch Python and till laugh out loud. Not only does it allow me to wallow in the comedy genius that Python was it also acts as a reminder that Britain is a bad bad place!

We had the genius of Python and then degenerated to allowing the likes of Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Lenny Henry, Jim Davidson, Graham Norton, Jimmy Carr etc etc make a career and a handsome living out of comedy.

it is like Paul Merson and Gudjohnsen making a handsome living out of providing sound financial advice.

I've never really watched their sketch show, besides the hilarious Ministry of Silly Walks and the one I've seen over and over again and I still don't understand it - The Dead Parrot sketch.

I've seen Life of Brian and The Holy Grail, and they're both brilliant.

What? You empty-headed animal food trough water! Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries!

I doubt this'll be classed as cult, but it's easily thebest british series I've ever watched - Being Human. It's absolutely amazing. Fully advise it to anyone on here who likes Vampire/Werewolf/Ghost stories.
