Goalkeepers

So my 80 year old mother calls, as she does every Sat or Sun; due to the time difference she always seems to call in the middle of a game. I give her her dues, she knows I LUV this club as she has bought me many kits as a kid over the years and now we are into Calendars, she always talks about the team when she calls. So a week or so ago she informs me that her Dad's cousin played for Chelsea as a goalkeeper (now she tells me when he is dead! Died in 1978) After some skillful interrogation I discover it's Vic Woodley (see Avatar). So I do some digging and discover he played over 250 games for the Blues, 19 games for England and the FA Cup with Derby as well as playing in the famous Moscow Dynamo game at the bridge. By all accounts he was a brilliant keeper. ::ChELSeAFaN:: Which got me wondering 'who was the best goalkeeper we had?' I was a huge 'Cat' fan as a kid. I thought he was brilliant.

Is Cech the best we have seen?

I Cech stays and also start to play like he did prior the injury I think he could become our greatest. But he's not there yet.

Have to admit that my knowledge of all our keepers is limited, but apart from liking Fatty I would go with Bonetti, I think.

For me there are only three names in contention. The Cat, Steady Eddie and Cech. Steady Eddie at his best was fantastic but he probably gets rules out due to his career being cut so short by injury (not his fault I know).

Personally I can't separate Bonetti and Cech. Prior to the Hunt injury I would have given it to Cech but although I still think Cech is great I don't feel he is as good as he was before the injury and that may swing the cote toward the Cat.

Never saw the likes of Bonneti play, but personally still rate Cech as one of the best in the world. I think he is now starting to get back to where he was before that c*** got involved with him. So i would go with Cech, however, i think Carlo was also a top notch goalie when he was in his prime.

Eddie was a great keeper, but Cech is just above him and hopefuly will regain his form that at on etime made him the best in the world....which would answer your question. The Cat was good, very good. But I'm sorry to say he was only great very occaisionaly.

Peter Bonetti for me, no question. Probably the most agile keeper ever, was great at plucking crosses out of the air, and could throw the ball further than most keepers could kick it.

I'd rate Eddie second, with Petr third.

And most goalkeepers could throw the ball further than Peter could kick it.

I generally loved Carlo Cudicini thought on his day he was a fantastic keeper. Now he's went to S**** maybe not so much. I can't really comment though as I've not seen much of Chelsea historically but I'd probably go for Bonetti.

I cant believe no one else has mentioned big dave, he was brilliant (for the opposition)

Certainly in my time as a supporter it's been Petr Cech, however my dad always raved about Peter Bonetti, and I have seen a few old games when they were played on ITV back in 90s late at night, and the guy was brilliant.

Surprisingly enough there has only been one Chelsea goalkeeper that has scored a goal:

Benjamin Howard Baker (13 February 1892 – 10 September 1987) was an English footballer and athlete of the early 20th century.

Howard Baker was goalkeeper for England, Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea football clubs, having previously played for the renowned amateur team, the Corinthians.

He was also an internationally renowned highjumper, holding the British record as well as that of the Amateur Athletics Association.

He made 93 appearances between 1921 - 26.

I thought Cudicini when he was on form was amazing.

Me too, I was really quite gutted for him when we signed cech.

Ed de Goey will always stick in my mind, I think because he was with us when I was in secondary school, best time of my blah blah

But Cech has to be the best keeper we've had in my time.

It's between Cech and Bonetti, but remember the Cat was playing behind the likes of John Dempsey, John Mortimore and Micky Droy, so he has to get the vote - if he hadn't played that game in Mexico in 1970 he would be rated much higher by everyone. More interesting is the worst ever - Tommy Hughes, Peter Borota or Dave Beasant.
