coco Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 Sky sources: Walcott and Bent left out by England. Joe Cole included. Full 23 to follow...
Nibs Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) Walcott being omitted is a surprise I have to say. Almost certainly the right decision, but still a surprise. Joe had to be in the 23. He may lack consistancy, but at International level, England have very few players who can turn a game with a bit of brilliance. That's why I think Joe does better for England than he does for us. He won't do it week in week out but when you need something a bit special (like the goal against Sweden), he can deliver where others can't. Pleased for him Edited June 1, 2010 by Nibs
coco Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 Looks like Shaun Wright-Phillips made it as well.
coco Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 Leighton Baines, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker and Michael Dawson will join Theo Walcott, Darren Bent and Adam Johnson as the seven not going to South Africa.
ethicalstrategy Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Don't know if Joe's inclusion was based wholly on his performance on Sunday, but he certainly helped make a big difference when he came on. We didn't need Walcott, Lennon and SWP so taking Joe makes sense. As does leaving Walcott behind. Hard on him, but if he's good enough he'll get another chance.
valim Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 im not fan of england but swp ahead walcott i dont thing this will help england swp is pure noob and bent score most goals behind ronney as english man !!!
goose Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Like most very surprised at the Walcott decision. Most certainly the correct one in my opinion. Good on J Cole getting in. I can hear Wenger whinging already.
coco Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 im not fan of england but swp ahead walcotti dont thing this will help england swp is pure noob and bent score most goals behind ronney as english man !!! This is tournament football, SWP is probably a bigger impact player than Walcott from the bench. Also Walcott has no clubmates in the squad, so maybe Capello thought SWP would fit in better with the other players. Bent would be no good up against the top teams like Spain, Italy, Brazil, but Crouchy has something different about him, air on his day he can beat any player in the air, including the best defenders in the world, thats worth taking him imo.
ace Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Crouch had to go, his international goal tally is pretty solid. I'm surprised over Baines, I thought he was a shoe-in to back-up Ashley...really doesn't matter who does though as long as Ash stays healthy.
Jones1905 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Incredibly pleased for J.Cole for getting through, final squad announced at 4pm. I would take Upson over Dawson as well, so I'm pleased about that decision as well. I'm surprised he's picked SWP over Walcott but again I think SWP is a great addition to the squad as an injection of pace.. IMO he'll be able to consistently provide good crosses in from wide and give the wingbacks a hard time.
ethicalstrategy Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 IMO he'll be able to consistently provide good crosses in from wide and give the wingbacks a hard time. That would be some change!
blizeH Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green. Defenders: Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips. Forwards: Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney
Spiller86 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Good news for our boys then. Means only Alex missed out on his respective squad (which BTW is ridiculous.) Shame for Parker though, even if he does play for West Ham still wouldn't have minded seeing him in there. I suppose with Barry passed fit he was never gonna make it though.
Jones1905 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 That would be some change! I meant more consistant than Walcott specifically, SWP can help turn a game around in an instant. Hopefully Joey will play ahead of them both though!
Backbiter Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Only real surprises for me are the inclusion of SWP and Carrick, who have zero form, and the omission of Walcott, who also has zero form. So clearly zero form was no barrier to slection (see also Ferdinand, Heskey, Upson).
Ruh Buh Juh Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 England omit Baines, Dawson, Huddlestone, A Johnson, Parker, Walcott & Bent from squad
PloKoon13 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Great to see SWP in the squad. England are going to need some blind runs and terrible crosses to help them win the World Cup.
coco Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 SWP may not even get on the pitch, out of the 23, I'd be suprised if Cappello uses more than 18 players throughout the tournament, even if England reach the final stages. So that means 5 players wont get on the pitch at all, probably 2 of the keepers, 2 defenders and 1 midfielder. Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green. Defenders: Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips. Forwards: Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney
dkw Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Carrick and Heskey, this is the best we have? f**ks sake.
Tea Bar Boy Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Not a lot of pace in the squad which worries me ........... a good passing team will rip us to shreds
Backbiter Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Carrick and Heskey, this is the best we have? f**ks sake. That applies equally to Carjacker, Warnock, Upson, SWP and Johnson, I'd have thought.
mad_mac Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 If I were and England player, and seen Carragher (I never feel bad when England loses, I'm quitting international footy as Liverpool is more important) get picked ahead of me, I'd be more than a little upset
