August 29, 20178 yr Does anybody remember Magnus Hedman coming to Chelsea as a stand in goalkeeper in 2006? I was watching a programme about his drug fuelled lifestyle, after he quit football, because he couldn't handle the fact that it was the end of his career, then he mentioned that he came to Chelsea for a season. It got so bad for him after football, he contemplated suicide many times. Thankfully for him, he's leading a normal family life now.

Yes I read it, can't remember name of book or author, the chapter on us was called Dawes road, as that's where a clash happened, I thought the game was 1989 when we won 1-0 Gareth hall winner, I might be wrong

That game was the height of Madchester loads of Man U wearing flares that day.

I don't think Utd filled the away end that day perhaps 3/4 full. Don't recall seeing any fighting though I never hung around just having a couple of drinks in a local pub before the match.

Still amazing that feat looking back. What was also amazing was that he converted from a forward to a full back after leaving us. Very talented player. Anyone else remember him playing for us in the old Daily Express 5-a-side tournament that used be shown on Sportsnight? He was absolutely brilliant, and I remember reading an interview in which he said that performance got him his move away from us. He went on to be involved in the England age-group coaching set-up. He may still be.

It always amazes me how they all appeared at the same time in such a team.
August 29, 20178 yr Duncan McKenzie was certainly a very skilful player. In 1978/79 he played 15 times scoring 4 goals for us. Brian Clough signed him for Leeds during his very short spell there at the start of 1974/75. McKenzie was in the PFA Team of the Year in both 1974/75 and 1975/76. He played for Anderlecht, who were a really good side in 1976/77. He played 9 times scoring 2 goals before moving to Everton in Dec 1976. Another of McKenzie's talents were his ability to throw a golf ball the length of a football pitch (perhaps he should have been a javelin thrower ?) and the ability to jump over a Mini !

Rimmer had been on the Man Utd bench for the 1968 European Cup Final at Wembley. Spink had only played one game for the Villa first team before Rimmer was injured only 10 minutes into the Final !
August 29, 20178 yr During 1980/81 Aston Villa only used 14 players ! 10 players played 36 or more of the 42 League matches, with 7 players ever present. Amazing!

Be interesting to see how they did in the domestic cups as well. I know the old European cup was drawn round by round and don't know how many games played to win it.

Yes that's right, utd were near bottom of league, fergie on verge of being sacked and we were singing going down, utd didn't bring as many as usual, and I think the crowd was a poor 30k, the match also was one of the first to broadcast live round world but not in this country as 3pm Saturday, I might be wrong though on TV bit? 4 years before we had 45k v utd, a few weeks later Hillsborough happened and football changed forever, fergie kept his job and the rest as they say is history

The other team fighting them for title were lpswich, they also had great players, mills, butcher, Osman, thyson, muhren, gates, mariner, Brazil, wark, and enough said about cloughies forest, 2 European cups! Money didn't seem to matter in those days, great teams
August 29, 20178 yr That Ipswich Town team was really good back then. Remember being delighted when they beat Arsenal to win the FA Cup in 1978. John Wark hit the woodwork on three separate occasions in that Final. I thought that they were going to win the treble of League,FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 1980/81. They won just the UEFA Cup. John Wark I think scored 14 goals in that tournament! Amazing feat !!
August 29, 20178 yr In March 1980 Ipswich beat Man Utd 6-0 at Portman Road and the Utd keeper Gary Bailey saved three penalties! One was a twice taken penalty from Kevin Beattie and the other was from Frans Thysen (wrong spelling I know).
August 29, 20178 yr Just read a very good article about the great Jimmy Greaves on the official club site. It was posted last Thursday, but just catching up having been really busy with work last week. Be very grateful if someone could post it on here. Cheers.
