Did any other clubs have an equivalent of the benches? Do the regulations require that all seater means tip up seats, or is it possible to have modern padded benches? As a safe standing compromise, it might be handy to allocate a deluxe benches area in the new stadium for singers?

No ! .....no other club had benches ( a plank of wood on a concrete base! ) .....Chelsea FC were the one and only club with them! .......there were no row or seat numbers either ! ......back in the early 1970's ...* it used to cost me about a shilling to transfer to the west stand benches ( after I had paid about 1 shilling & nine pence to get through the main turnstile at either the bovril or shed entrance) ......pay on the gate .....sit where you like! * that's a guesstimate, as I can't remember exactly how much it cost....as it was over 45 years ago! .......but I do remember going out with a Ten Shilling Note (which is the equivalent of 50p now) and getting home after a good day out at football, getting pissed ( a pint of beer was only one shilling & nine pence (about 9p in today's world) and still having some loose change left over! .....football was a working mans sport in those days! A bench can't be tipped up !.......if they were padded, they would get ripped up! ...similar to when the wooden planks got ripped up back in the day and used as javelins when we played some teams we didn't like!
November 5, 20178 yr Dulwich Hamlet have played us a few times. Hamlet History webpage has the information. I found this when googled Dulwich Hamlet Stamford Bridge. Can't seem to cut and paste the link. Be obliged if anyone feels interested enough to do it. Cheers.

The last time was a hastily arranged friendly on a free Saturday during the Hoddle era, a 1-1 draw. I didn’t know about it and at that time I could see the Champion Hill floodlights from my garden. These days I can hear the crowd. From the 20’s to the 60’s Hamlet were a well known and respected amateur club and friendlies against league teams were fairly common and the London Senior Cup was an important competition.

About 20 minutes in there's a clip of Chelsea fans walking down what looks like the Kings Rd. They all have different scarfs on including one which is mainly green with white and red stripes. I haven't seen a scarf like that for nearly 40 years great memories. yep I know the scarf you mean

Have just had a look through the Chelsea FC: The Official History written by Rick Glanvill and published in 2005 and there are a couple of bits about programmes. In our first season (1905-1906) a handbook of fixtures, player profiles, editorials and adverts was published at the start of the campaign. At the same time there was the Chelsea Chronicle which started out with four pages and then had eight pages. And was the first pamphlet style programme produced in the South. In the fifties there was an overhaul of media including programmes and we were the first club to to produce a 16 page magazine style programme. It sold for 6d (2.5p in new money)
November 8, 20178 yr Boyne: Cheers for that. I have that book and will look through it for the info about the official programme.

A bit off subject but I found this on collecting programmes. Includes a bit about the Khaki Final of 1915 between Chelsea and Sheffield United. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2001/dec/31/sport.comment2

November 9, 20178 yr I loved the benches , 1983 my proper season going home and away aged 17 and splitting home games between the west stand , gate 13 and the benches depending who we were playing , thousands of lads of all ages dressed in their best tennis and golfing gear , my best memories of the benches were 83/84 Derby first game of the season 5-0 , 83/84 Pompy christmas time 2-2 , started of in gate 13 on the pitch over to the benches to get nearer the Portsmouth fans with hundreds of other like minded young men and this was before the game even started , 84/85 Sunderland semi-final league cup just a mad night inside and outside of the ground , all Clive Walkers fault bless him , I could go on but finally for me was 94 Wolves QF FA cup 1-0 , as I started I loved the benches . Happy Happy days .

Happy Happy days . If you were in the shed there was no better site than seeing the benches or gate 13 all getting out their seats to 10 men went to mo, if it was a big game then the west stand seats would be up with the benches at 10 men went to mo, remember in our first season back in div 1, in 89/90 with bobby Campbell's team, we played Millwall at home, we won 4-0, think Kerry either scored 2 or 3 goals, and I was in East middle (posh seats) and the whole benches and west stand seats all stood numerous times to sing "Millwall, Millwall run, Millwall run from Chelsea" it looked very impressive.
November 10, 20178 yr That was a popular song in 89. When we played Boro at Wembley that year everyone mobbed up under the stand at halftime and walked towards their section. the ' Boro run from Chelsea' tune had the desired effect. I remember after a geyser who was standing next to me got out of breath during the melee and had a puff on his ventolin inhaler- being asthmatic meself I too had a tug. 29 years after whenever I bump into him we always have a chuckle about this

Your A RUDE C*NT .....aren't you Mr Ewell CFC ........crawl back into your hole or wherever you've come from ......oh by the way I was in the Matthew Harding Lower for the Watford match ...and I'll be there for the upcoming Southampton match .....not that it's got anything to do with you. I've been a regular at the Bridge since 1962....Supporting Chelsea FC ....unlike you running down fellow Chelsea fans.....you've obviously got nothing better to do with your time ......whilst your sat on your huge arse.
November 11, 20178 yr Transfering from the shed end into the west stand seats was sometimes just a good way of introducing ourselves to the oppo in the northstand
