Im pretty certain thats me walking along the bottom with the leather jacket and faded jeans. We spent the game sliding on that muddy bank. Dixon got 4 if thats the game.

we got there early for that game and persuaded them to let us have a drink in their bar, where the Chelsea Exec were having a meal. Told all the locals that Dixon was useless and had the believing us!!!! After the game, we walked in and they wanted to kill us!!!!! Happy days indeed.

I get very nostalgic when i walk past the gate that is locked up at FB station....I remember the many years walking up the stairs to that gate, giving the inspectors sixpence or whatever, and telling em i got ON the train at a closer station than where i did get on...Any money they collected stayed in their pockets anyway so everyone was happy

Having been here in Spain for the past 15 years, presume FB has changed a bit right?

This the one you're on about I guess CB.

For some reason the quality has taken a nose dive, don't ever remember us playing on a black pitch!!

If you'd like a better version drop me your email and I'll send over the actual jpeg.

Fantastic pic. Brings it all back! I'd estimate easily 10,000 plus that day. We also had loads in the seats (both upper & lower decks) to our left & more in the pitch-side terrace to our right. A handful in the Pompey end too (a few skirmishes). I attended most away games that year & our support was just phenomenal, at times (e.g. Leeds away, 8,000 plus, etc.). "We thought you were hard, we were wrong" I remember the whole terrace singing in unison at the Pompey end! This was also the game that ended with dozens of seats being smashed & thrown onto the pitch. Intervention from Ken Bates himself eventually calmed things down.

During the game two very serious boys suddenly appeared, at the back of the terrace where I stood.

They were throwbacks to the past, dress sense wise. Harrington style jackets, spiky hair. One had really long arms & shovel sized fists! They were both hyper & buzzing! It was obvious by their demeanour & conversation that they had just arrived back from the Pompey end. And by all accounts Pompey had bottled it! I wasn't surprised! Like I said they were very serious lads & we were very wary of 'em too! But thankful they were CFC. What made this 'bizarre' is that they had a couple of starry eyed "very young" nippers tagging along with 'em? They were addicted to violence! Heads constantly darting around, looking for the next piece of action! Soon enough they clocked a couple of opposing mobs shaping up either side of the right hand side terrace dividing fence & off they went ... with their little nippers in tow ... !

Anyone on here?

Had a chat with some Stoke fellas in the pub yesterday. The worst trouble they had ever seen at Stoke was one year in the early 70s ( I think, might be late 60s ) when Chelsea paid them a visit. The whole end behind one of the goals was mayhem apparently. Anyone on here who might know the year?

Difficult to say, we always seemed to take a fair sized mob to Stoke. I only started going to away games in the early 70's, and we went in the Boothen End a few times - plenty of rucks, but always loads of old bill in there so I wouldn't have said there was mayhem. Those Stoke fellas were probably talking about the late 60's - from the stories I've heard, Chelsea caused havoc at Wolves, Forest and Coventry back then, so it sounds about right.

Stoke fans I've talked to since told me that Chelsea and Man.Utd were the only mobs who always went in the Boothen. I always rated Stoke's mob, they were always up for it and even brought a mob to the Bridge in 67/68 (fighting in the North Stand, mentioned in the following match programme). This was before the North Stand mob existed, so a few Shed boys clearly strolled through the tunnel under the old East Stand to have a chat with the visitors

Chelsea"s allocation for Portsmouth away was 13,000 was 11,000 terrace and 2,000 seats. It says it in the Chelsea v Fulham programme the game Chelsea won 4 0. No way does the away end behind the goal hold 11,000 that must be the combined capacity of the away terrace and the side enclosure either side of the tunnell.

Bates put in the Chelsea Barnsley programme that Chelsea had just under 11,000 so with 2,000 in the seats that was just under 9,000 standing. The game was all ticket but loads of Chelsea paid on the night so with a few gibbing in Chelsea most prob had over 11,000. Chelsea were trying to pull the fences down dividing the side enclosure and the fratton end so Chelsea were either side of the tunnell. At the time the capacity of fratton park was 36,000 with 7,000 seats so the terraces held 29,000. The fratton end and the side opposite the tunnell were both bigger than the away end. Id say the terrace behind the goal held about 6,500 and the side enclosure 4,500 going the lengh of the pitch making atotal of 11,000. Some question would Chelsea have so many in a gate of just 19,267 meaning Portsmouth were outnumbered but the home gate before the Chelsea game was 8k and the last 2 home games of the season after the Chelsea game both were 8k.

I think it's fair to say that the numbers Chelsea took away (outside London) during the peak years to virtually all the places that mattered was very impressive indeed. I'm confident we weren't bettered by many ... Personally, I never saw the same numbers reciprocated, back at the Bridge from any of the places I visited ... I suspect many on here may have similar sentiments ...

For the Pompey game we paid on the gate, and was in the stand to the left of or terrace

2-2 result....our fans very lively, then the kept back at the end of the game, went on and on. Then out came some dog handlers and couple agressive bill, couple fans jumped on the fence nd got wacked wiv truncheons, then all hell broke lose, our bit of the stand was wrecked. Bill caused that problem no doubt.

One of our best turnouts in that era

We use to have the best away support out of London them days and not just to games that matter but also place like Oldham and Bolton.

I can always remember what great support we took to Cardiff and Swansea a few time .

I can also remember Bristol City away where the terraces were packed so we went into the new stand and the bill let use sit around the pitch.

Them days most of us use to get the inter city train every away game even to away games during the week.

And people tell me l should look forward not backward but they were great days.
