A picture of Stamford Bridge in 1939. The man in the middle of the three is Billy Birrell who was appointed as manager in that year. In the background can be seen the work being done on the old North Stand. There was a recent discussion about when the old seating in the North Stand was built.

A picture of David Speedie playing in goal. He went in goal after Eddie Niedzwiecki was injured. If I remember correctly it was in a League Cup game against Fulham. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was at that mid-week game and I seem to recall it being QPR? I recall him doing well but then being lobbed which was the obvious strike due to his height!!

Yes think it was QPR. The other game when his cruciate ligament went was against Oxford.

Poor crowd looking at the attendance, fourth place going for the title that year. I was in the shed that night.

Well we are two of the 17,871. That just leaves 17,869 to find.........................!!

Nibs and Richard P, thanks for your posts and correcting me about who we played. My memory is getting blurred over the years - must be too much whisky. Was in the Shed that night. Remember Speedie being lobbed for their goal. Nibs, as you say, the obvious choice given his height. Eddie was a fine goalie. A real shame when he had to give up the game.

The crowd was probably low because a few days later 50k of us were descending on Wembley, "when pates went up to lift the members cup, we were their"

Of course! My first time seeing Chelsea play at Wembley and what a day! Speedie 3, Lee 2 and needless to say a Rougvie OG and penalty giveaway! As well as Eddie, Dixon must have got injured in the QPR game as I remember him missing out on the final.

Still my favourite away kit.

Yes what a day,  what game, and even  more what support we had that day!! Even though it was a Micky mouse cup, as 16 year old I gave it billy big spuds at school the next day, best Wembley day out I've had, with the 97 cup final the only one to equal it, I think Dixon got injured the day before as we played saints away on the Saturday and following day the final at wembley

Amazed Speedo went in goal as the crossbar stands at 8 feet high. Can't remember anyone around that time as a useful emergency keeper. Tommy Langley did it twice that I remember, away to spammers lost 1-3 77/78 Tommy Taylor mistook John Phillips head as the ball and broke his jaw. Then Norwich away around 1980-81 Petar  Borota went off and we lost 0-2 I think.
